One week to go until Leverage in Death is in your hands! As is tradition, I’m going to share some gentle teasers — little things to look for as you race through the book. No plot points, no major spoilers, just a little extra eye on details. I’ll add a new one each day from now until Friday (8/31) to whet the appetite a little bit more.
What would you do to protect your family?
Leverage in Death opens with a bizarre suicide bombing in a Wall St. office building. As airline executives finalized a merger that would make news in the business world, marketing VP Paul Rogan walked into the plush conference room, strapped with explosives, and destroyed the room. Headlines spoke of death and destruction, but Eve Dallas confirmed that Rogan was cruelly coerced by two masked men holding his family hostage. His motive: save his wife and daughter. But what motivated the masked men?
Now Eve must untangle the reason for an inexplicable act of terror, look at suspects inside and outside both corporations, and determine whether the root of this crime lies in simple sabotage, or something far more complex and twisted.
OK, that takes us through about three-quarters of the book. The rest needs to flow through the end of the case.
But stay tuned through the end. Every once in a while there’s an epilogue.
I’ll open the discussion thread bright and early Tuesday morning.
Time to share some social media updates! We’ve had two cover reveal videos on Facebook recently. (The first is also on the St. Martin’s Press You Tube channel.)
The first for Of Blood & Bone, book 2 in the Chronicles of The One, out December 4.

Nora and JD are on Instagram! OK, we’ll be completely transparent here: I’m posting on the Instagram pages. Some people prefer to bypass Facebook but like IG for the photos. Not all the content will repeat on all social media but I think it could be fun to follow. Search for Nora Roberts (@norarobertsauthor) and JD Robb (@jdrobbauthor).
Finally, some #randomkatness (and a repeat photo). Nora mentioned Kat’s design for the baby blanket in the Girls in the City post, right? Well not only is she designing it to honor the family that came before the baby, but it’s REVERSIBLE like this one she made for her niece. My mind is completely blown.
Today’s the day! You can talk all about Dark in Death here — so be warned, spoilers are very much ahead!
Did you catch my teasers as you raced through? Or are you savoring because you know September is a ways away?
Share away in the comments.

The end of the wait is in sight! Dark in Death is in stores on Tuesday, January 30. The perfect way to end the first month of the year, don’t you think? As has become tradition, I’ll share some teasers about the book here.
No spoilers, no plot points for the series as a whole. No big secrets because, well, that’s just not right. Instead just some nuggets you may enjoy as the case unfolds.
I’ll update each day this week (I think – honestly it depends on how fast I go through them).
And for kicks and giggles (plus the mental gymnastics for me) I’m going to write them as haikus. Or post videos (I get bored easily). So check back.
Monday, January 22
Summerset gone? Yay!
Hide? Seek! Find the perfect spot.
Big house, takes a while.
Tuesday, January 23
Cop books that don’t blow?
Some agree it can be done.
But not Jenkinson.
Wednesday, January 24
Mohair! Pink Shantung!
She who rides a hobbyhorse
gets some alpaca.
Came back to lend my opinion to the early comments on the Wednesday haiku:

Thursday, January 25
I know you all feel like this:

But here’s today’s teaser to perk you up:
Feeney a fanboy?
It’s never whack timing when
rock gods add their voice.
Friday, January 26
Murder cop, reader:
each one looks for a hero
Who’s yours in the end?
And that’s it for teasers! Back to open the discussion thread on Tuesday!

Happy 2018 to our Fall into The Story family! While I’m here daily to review the comments — mainly about Year One — and keep some general order, it’s been a while since the last original post.
While she’ll fill you in when she has a moment, I can report that Nora and family had a busy Christmas and another crowded-to-the-rafters New Year’s open house. (I had to give that a pass as I never quite got over a germs that stayed in place since Thanksgiving.) Once she restored the house to order, Nora went directly back to work on her plan to finish the first draft of a new book before the January spa trip.
Did you have any doubt she met that goal? Don’t you know our Nora by now?
My husband and I met up with Nora and BW last Monday at a game-free, scoreboard-less spa. I resolutely ignored the mantel over the fireplace — the resting spot for the scoreboard — the entire time. I know the FITS family waits with bated breath to see if I can be the Biggest Loser three years running, but April is still a season away. I can wait.
I’m home now, Nora is back at her desk tomorrow. For the first time, ever, she wrote after her morning workout and before the afternoon spa treatment during the January trip. (This is the usual November schedule, but she’s determined to finish the current WIP in order to take the annual winter trip to see Eve and Roarke. I think we can all agree with that motivation.)
Next weekend the 2018 room by room, drawer by drawer purge starts. And Nora will get back to her winter pattern of work, bread, soup, clearing.
In other news:
The Year One conversation continues on Facebook. Since that’s a spoiler-free zone you may notice an influx of new readers to this space looking to chat about Year One. Welcome!
In important news:
The Of Blood & Bone release– book 2 in The Chronicles of The One — is now a week later: December 4, 2018. The final book will be out the first week in December 2019.
In Death news:
Here’s the TV ad for Dark in Death — out on January 30:

And here’s some St. Martin’s Press artwork about DiD:
Inside the Dark in Death US/Canada hardcover is a 3-D image. This is a sample with a little message — I can’t read these, I’m way too nearsighted — but I do know what it says. *
In future news:
If you subscribe to Nora’s News (you’ll find the sign up box at the bottom of any page on either website) — the next issue includes an excerpt of June’s Shelter in Place.
If you are so inclined to read them, the Dark in Death teaser thread opens on Monday, January 22.
Talk to you soon!
Laura
*I will tell you what it says if you ask in the comments.
Here are a few things that popped up on social media this week. Hope you enjoy!
Here are the solutions to the crossword and cryptic puzzles on the inside of the US/Canada Secrets in Death hardcover jackets:
As we speed toward release date, St. Martin’s asked me to shoot a short video of my reaction to seeing the finished edition of Year One. I posted it on You Tube for easier access: Laura’s Reaction.
And finally, here’s the video St. Martin’s created for Year One that will show in Target later this month.[KGVID]http://fallintothestory.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/YearOneHD_presale_v1.mp4[/KGVID]

Finally, finally, finally! Today is Secrets in Death release day! This is the place for any and all thoughts about the 45th entry in the In Death series. Spoilers will very much follow.
Did you find the teasers?
Were you stunned by one of the big reveals?
Share in the comments.
Laura
We finally made it to a week out from the Secrets in Death release and you know what that means: teaser time! Are you doing ok? Did you at least enjoy the summer (winter in the southern hemisphere) or wish it away? Is it mean to say I had to reread Secrets to come up with teasers? Probably. But I only speak the truth. 🙂
As always these are gentle teasers, no plot reveals, no mystery solved, just little nuggets to be on the lookout for. I’ll post one a day through Thursday and update with the date. Comments are absolutely welcome, spoilers are not.
And here we go:
Monday, August 28
After Eve contemplates small humans in smaller spaces, she ponders the puzzle of human conversation recorded for entertainment.
Tuesday, August 29
Before I post this one, I just have to comment that the majority of guesses guesses yesterday were way off the mark. Way off. Off enough that I had to quell the Cranky Publicist from replying– except once. And now, Teaser #2:
Roarke and Summerset have a “well done, grasshopper” moment before images of Summerset nearly ruin a pie moment. Oh and Scary Roarke may have met his match.
Wednesday, August 30
In which we learn Peabody has a fishing face, Kyung is as devious as he is diplomatic (aka not an asshole) and Trina gives good threats.
Cranky Publicist note: I’m working from the beach right now, the worst possible place to feel cranky. But that’s how I feel — frustrated by all the guesses/reader wishes that center around procreation. As I mention at the top, these are not spoilers, they are teasers. Nuggets to look for — like the Easter eggs in Disney movies — as we move toward Eve solving the case. They seem cryptic now, but should make sense in context.
For me, any changes for characters — whether it’s expanding what we know about them or new directions for them — constitute spoilers and I’m not about to give anything like that away in these posts. I think that’s part of the fun of reading a series like the In Deaths, letting the major changes/shifts come in without warning.
We’ve got posts everywhere on this blog about no babies so please stop guessing that — for anyone. Please read the answers Nora’s given for 22 years in our Index O’Answers. Take your guesses outside the box and then see how they match up with the real thing.
And now, today’s teaser:
Good TV/vid will always have loyal fans, Peabody included. Roarke takes a linguistic journey to a youthful memory.
September 1
In a change of pace, a bonus quote:
“You were born to be a cop, and I was born to be something else entirely. I’d likely still be that, in only small ways that entertained me, if not for you. You finished the process, we’ll say.” Roarke
PS From Weary Nora*:
Laura and I really want these little bits from upcoming books to be fun for you guys. We want them to be fun for us, too. And honestly, truly, sincerely, the continued barrage of baby, baby, baby, babysitting, pregnancy eats away at the fun for us.
I honestly don’t know how I can make it more clear. IF–and that’s a very enormous if–if, if, if, Eve ever gets pregnant in the series it will be because I’ve decided it’s time to wrap it up. It will be the end. The end. I’m NEVER going to change my mind on this, as I’ve already stated countless times. I made this decision when I started the series, for all the reasons I’ve laid out before.
Someone else, at some point, MAY have a baby. But Laura certainly wouldn’t give that away on the blog. NO ONE is having a baby in Secrets. No one is pregnant. No one is babysitting.
The series is about murder and investigation, and yes, relationships. It has some humor, but the series is NOT a romantic comedy, and never will be.
I really hope you enjoy Secrets In Death. When you read it, I think you’ll see just how clever Laura’s little teases have been.
*Trademark pending 🙂
