Have fun and mind your manners! ~Laura
I just adore jd robb s in death books and keep on reading them thanks to nora.
Obsession was waiting on me this morniing on my Nook app. Before I could go to work I just had to peek. Four chapters later I am late for work but boy what a book. I love all the “In Death” books but this is one of those that grabs you from the first paragraph and all you can do is hold on for the ride OMG!!!!!
I just finished Obsession, pretty much put up a Do Not Disturb sign around me so I could read it in one sitting. The book was amazing. I loved the references to past cases, it was like a trip down memory lane. Thank you as always for a great story.
I totally agree! I reread (again) the entire series in preparation for Obsession in Death. The continuity is so terrific and Eve’s growth as a woman and cop is so compelling . Loved every nail-biting minute!
Thanks for the post this morning. I hadn’t opened my Kindle yet and it was such a pleasant surprise to see that Obsession in Death is out and that it had downloaded just after midnight. I’ll be back to read the discussion after I finish it. 😉
I stay up late and so started reading at 11:47 pm last night. Fell asleep reading so didn’t have much of an advantage.
Loved that we got to see more of Nadine than we have in a while.
Lots of great character moments and a solid case.
I like Nadine too, I figure she’s next in line for a permanent love interest!
I know Roarke is going to help Nadine find a new apartment in the next book. I hope there will be some description of it.
I think we’ll have to see on this. JD may have other things on her mind for Devoted.
Laura
Gonna go but the book today. I’ll be back in a couple days. Can hardly wait till 10:00 and the bookstore opens. Happy reading all
I have to wait for my mail lady to bring mine today. Gonna be the longest wait for me in a long time. Love the In Death series.
Read last 2 chapters. Now reading from beginning . Well worth the anticipation
I’m like you except mine was only the last chapter. I’m glad I did because I found out I was way off base about what I thought was going to happen.
Zipped down to comment so I wouldn’t fall to temptation. Downloading as I type! Woohoo! Sorry, this was the only place I could do my happy dance and people would understand 😉
I got so excited when it came time to go to the bookstore to buy my copy. My husband just smiled indulgently.
Ok, this is fantastic!! a new In Death when I woke up. already started it, but the first vic
is driving me crazy. I KNOW I’ve read that name before, but I don’t remember which book.
I’ve read them all, even the novellas, so please tell me which book she was in. Thanks
Hardcore Eve Dallas Fan!!!!!!
She’s in Rapture. Partner to one victim then later defense attorney for Jess Barrow.
Laura
Thank You!!!!Now I remember.
Were the altered VR goggles and Jesse Barrow both in Rapture?
Yes, Jesse used subliminals on Eve and Roarke. And the killer used them in the VR goggles
Thank you. Ok. Now I remember because Eve was trying to blame Jess at first for the goggles
This is driving me crazy. Her partner – Fitzhugh – which book was he in? I tried doing word search on all of my books backed up to my PC, and didn’t come up with anything.
Oh, never mind, someone answered my question lower down. I need to make a list of all the books referenced (or at least the characters and what books they are in) so I can look them up and possibly re-read those books after I finish this one, or at least look up the circumstances of their deaths.
Fitzhugh was the lawyer that was one of the victims in Rapture. he used the VR goggles. Fitzhugh was Bastwick’s law partner
I also love the references to past cases….and like to know which ones. I get a bit frustrated by inconsistencies , continuity issues…. for example Morris is Morse in vengence, Harpo is Harvo in a few stories and most recently Master Lu from survivor has become Master Wu ?
Waiting for the next one!
I’m glad someone else noticed. the first time Harpo was mentioned as Harvo, I was like wait a minute did I mix up the names?
I loved Obsession – I was lucky and got it from the library as soon as it was available there. I make sure they order all Nora Roberts/JD Robb books. (Wish I could afford to buy them myself.)
I have a good memory for characters but can’t remember any character named Master Wu (or Lu). What book was he in? I will have to reread it to understand why Eve wants to study with him.
But I did love the other characters mentioned from previous books, it gave me an opportunity to revisit those stories in my mind.
Here’s an idea for future books (or maybe the website/Facebook) – If Nora mentions a character from a previous book (not a reoccurring person like Nadine) maybe there can be a notation in the book what other book(s) they were in so that we can reread them if we want.
Mr Lu was in survivor. He had the villan as a silent partner and was unaware of his activities.
Also, what is the name of the new detective in the squad? In some books it is Sanchez and in Obsession it is Santiago.
Yeah. But wasn’t Morse also the killer in Book 2 ( Glory)?
I normally listen to the books on tape so I just chalk up those inconsistencies to get speaking or my hearing. When I do read the books, I do get a bit confused sometimes.
Thank you! I also had that question and was just trying to figure out what book that case was from when I saw this post on the discussion thread. I haven’t reread that one in awhile, so might need to!
Truly enjoyed the wander through the past cases. Loved the dramatic events at the end…and would have appreciated seeing some more of the reaction/wrap up from her squad. However, I have noticed the trend to revisit the prior stories/post event actions in subsequent books so I imagine we will get some more of that down the road. Thoroughly relieved Nadine was okay with her close call… And cannot wait to see Jaime’s house alarm system show up down the road. Fun to see them use a holo room at Central….and really delighted to see Hastings again… Truly terrified we were going to lose him…and I LIKE him…
Leanore Bastwick was in Rapture in Death – she is a partner in the law firm of Fitzhugh (victim in that book). She also represented Jess Barlow in that same book.
All I can say is, Nora has done it again! Forty books and counting and she’s got you hooked by the prologue. Don’t know how she does it, but I hope she keeps writing the In-Death series for a long time. This is my all time favorite series. THANK YOU, NORA! Judy.
I’ll have to wait for the mail lady. But it was a special one that I had to have it in paper and signed for my birthday. It will be worth the wait I know it 🙂
Raced through it earlier. Shortly starting the more leisurely reread. Loved seeing all of our old friends. Hastings was a nice surprise! The end was touching, and I really enjoyed getting to see more of everyone’s personal lives again.
Just devoured it and will go back for a closer re-read later. Loved seeing Hastings again and was surprised I didn’t wake my family shouting “NO!!!!” when she started up the steps. And probably would have woke my family shouting at Nadine but they were already up. Leonardo leaving Bella with Das (what was he thinking) and Mavis’ look at Dallas when she came back in the room and heard the new word Bella had learned. The ending abso-rocked! All in all a fantastic story (as usual)!!! Thanks!!!!!
I loved Bella’s lil obsession with Das’ lil bauble! LOL
Ooh meee too Jaasy, !! it was so good to read Eve finally soften to Bella, her Goddaughter, to start with and be prepared to at least pick her up from the floor instead of step back from that “scary little creature”, I really had to laugh at the interaction there with the diamond, actually in every book there is something in there that makes me LOL.. Loved Obsession,!!!!!! thanks Nora, xx
Isn’t it interesting that Bella is never afraid of Dallas? She’s really got her number. LOL
I loved that Dallas taught Bella to swear!! That was funny!
YES I had the same reaction when I realized she was going after Hastings. Fortunately I was at home alone 🙂
I am in love with Bella and wonder whether Eve even knows Bella has a big crush on her.
Was sooo excited that Obsession came out today – but my Nook app on my tablet doesn’t automatically download books I’ve pre-ordered like the Nook does, so I had to search for the title and tell it download. But now I’m torn. I’m re-reading Birthright, right after the lawyer’s office burned to the ground, and I don’t know if I should just put a bookmark in it and read Obsession before I finish Birthright, or wait until I’m done with Birthright to read Obsession.
Well, had my mind made up for me. Was still reading Birthright at my doctor’s office when the second murder happened. Can’t put it down until I find out!
That way is a little better I think. You have something to look forward to and we don’t.
I finally was able to start reading it yesterday after finishing Birthright very late the night before (or more appropriately, very early that morning). Granted, in the real world, no one “deserves to be murdered”, but I just about cheered when I found out who the first victim was. And I LOVED Mira’s reaction to the killer’s note to Eve on the wall. But Eve had a VERY good reason to keep herself on the case – about the fact that if she’s taken off the case, it may be seen by the killer as a punishment.
Holy cannolli!! My heart was pounding itself out of my chest most of this book. Nora, you are amazing! I can’t wait to get back home in two weeks and re-read the full series again. So many cameo appearances from old friends. Thank you, lovely lady!
Thank You Nora for another amazing book. You had me laughing a lot today. And thank you Laura for the teasers, I loved looking out for them. It will be another long wait for the next book, but in between books I will probably reread/ re listen all the books again, and look forward to other books you write.
Whee! It’s February 10th! First 50 pages done by the end of my lunch hour. After dinner, seriously considering earplugs, but will certainly ignore husband, cat, and even my other obsession(s), NCIS and NCIS: NOLA.
I have found a woman after my own heart. This is one day, though, that being unemployed has its advantages. I doubt I’ll have to give up the two NCIS’ unless I want to wait til tomorrow and watch them on the computer.
I forgot. I have another addiction besides In Death books and NCIS:NOLA. I live in Madison, WI and am a hardcore University of Wisconsin Badgers Men’s basketball. They’re playing in Nebraska tonight so that’s what I will be doing instead of NCIS:NOLA.
I listened to the game while I was reading the book. When NE started closing the gap it was while I was at a particularly tense time in the book. 🙂
This is her best one yet. It’s more like a thriller than her other ones were. I was glad to be wrong. I thought it would be Roarke that would be gone after and the squad would work to get him back to safety and not the whole squad. I’m glad Rieneke is a good shot, too.
Luckily I live in Australia so I got my copy downloaded onto my Kindle at 4pm so I could start reading it straight away. LOVED LOVED LOVED it! This is my favourite series couldn’t tell you how many times I have read and listened to it. It just gets better and better…..can’t wait for the next one.
Another wonderful book by Nora. Love he all her “friends” stand by her. Especially love Eve and Roarke!
I am enjoying the latest installment of the Eve Dallas story. I have not finished it yet. I am just on Chapter 3 as I just began reading about an hour ago with the interruptions of pesky chores. Wish I had reread Ritual in Death just prior to starting, but I had just completed rereading Indulgence in Death instead. Had to google the former/current suspect’s name to orient myself a bit. Thank goodness for Google when one needs it. Looking forward to reading what others think of this latest one in the next few days.
Thanks, Nora & staff, for all your hard work!
OMG! I started this at 3:30am this morning. Loved it! First time I’ve ever read one of the In Death books that I was so scared that one of the main characters would be killed! On the edge of my seat through the whole book! You out did yourself this time! My new In Death favorite!
Thank you Lisa. I couldn’t figure out why it felt like a thriller to me and you hit it right on the head.
Your welcome! I was so worried that someone important was going to be killed that I read it way to fast! Going to wait till the weekend and read it again slowly! 🙂
My heart is still pounding. With all the references to earlier cases and touching base with so many characters/friends, the emotions kicked the adrenaline into overdrive. Wow. Great book. Thanks
okay, since I can’t post anything on FB or my GR group just yet…here I am on the blog. Just saying…I loved this book. It has been a while since I have “loved” one. Fave cute moments are: Bella! Need I say more? I just love Eve’s reaction to the miniature version of Mavis. From the batting of eyelashes to get what she wants to eating the diamond to offering her bauble to Eve, to smooshing Eve’s face for a smooch. Just too cute. Spoiler alert…Eve drinks a Coke!!! This is the first time my addictive cola brand has even been mentioned. No sadly she did not buy it herself, someone offered it to her. But, she did not refuse to consume the alien brand. I have a few favorite moments in the book but the first one that caused a gawfaw was between her and Feeney regarding spinach smoothies. Eve totally needs to learn from her mentor on how to trick her squad. The storyline kept me hooked to the end. I really thought the endgame was going to be somewhere other than where it was. Thank you NR/JDR for yet another satisfying novel. OMG! I have 6 months to wait now, I feel a complete re-listen to the series coming on.
What doesUNSUB stand for in book?
I’ve been reading In Death since naked was first published in paperback (recently received hardback version) and all the others that followed — hardcovers since first one published (Divided) and am looking forward to replacing all paperbacks with hardcovers — just ordered Glory. WELL — Obsession is certainly different! Eve has faced people who wanted her dead in the past — and that crazy English murderer did leave her notes with each body — but this “wannabe Eve” takes the cake. In addition to all the “stuff” surrounding the murders, I thoroughly enjoyed Eve’s care for and worry about her friends — even or especially when she is puzzled by how many people she does care about and how she “acquired” them. Her interaction with Bella had me laughing out loud — even more than sucking on the diamond was the baby’s clear repetition of “shit.”. I received the book this morning and finished it about a half hour ago (my eyeballs are spinning) — and will put it away for a week or so before I do a slow re-read (my usual pattern) — maybe then I’ll have more to say and more intelligent observations. Did love “later, Honey” and that there were no “snake eyes” for her or Mira. It took me a little bit to place each of the characters from past cases in their correct books — Rapture and Portrait, but I still haven’t placed Ledo.
If Ledo helped with the Snooks case, who was the street person whose heart was cut out, then it involved the cop who was jealous of Eve. And where they took her badge. …Betrayal maybe? Don’t have the book in front of me
Snooks was the street person in Conspiracy in Death.
Lara
Dang. I knew I would guess the wrong book. lol
I LOVED Snooks. Poor old Snooks.
That’s in conspiracy in death.
Can’t wait to get it.
i just got my copy of Obsession and cannot wait to start. I love the “inDeath series”
What can i say except AMAZING!! We all know that Nora is an exceptional writer but this particular book was outstanding…from beginning to end. She wove a great story filled with mystery, romance, friendship and some great humor. As always she brings back some great characters from her earlier books and in this case reminding us of the Jess Barrows case, Eve and Roarke making crazy love in front of the mansion still makes me laugh, and then Dirk Hastings , who actually now has a personal life and then Jamie, still the EDD brain. The one quote in this book that set up the whole story for me was when Eve said to Roarke,
“I am what I am, I do what I do, and a big part of that is being yours.” Oh my!
The there was Sexcation, WWED-what would Eve do? and Bella Eve not just loving Eve to death but her diamond ba ba…never mind Momma! Shit! So many great moments in this book…so much to think about. Nora just gets better and better. Laura thank you for all your little insights that kept us going as we waited for it to come. Looking forward to lots more discussion:)
I finished this morning and I loved this book. I felt as though I was trying as hard as Eve to solve this mystery since I knew the vicitims from other books. It was sort of interactive for me. I was able to figure the 2nd and 3rd victims out from tips and was so relieved when the number 3 escaped. I was talking to myself through the whole thing to see if I could figure out not only who was next but who dunnit. This was a great experience. So many things I want to say about this book but for sure, WELL DONE NORA! THIS ONE HAS MOVED TO THE TOP OF MY FAVORITES! Know what the worst thing about this book was? The last page. I have to wait 6 months for the next Eve Dallas adventure. Bummer!!!
Be glad it’s only 6 months. There’s a different author I really like and I have to wait a year for the next book in a series. Fortunately she writes 2 different series so I get one from the first series in July and the one from the other series in September.
I just finished reading. It was everything I wanted and more. Such intense storytelling with beloved Characters. If it’s possible I love Eve and Roarke ( dies in swoons ) more than I ever did. Obsession definitely slides into my all time top 5 In Deaths.
So so so good. SO. GOOD.
Just read Obsession! Loved It. I got lucky in that I bought all the audio books and I’m listening to them (again!) Was listening to Rapture in Death when Obsession came out. Obsession just made Rapture so much more interesting to read. What an awesome author Nora is! Loved the book, love the series!!
Got my book the day it was released but waiting til the weekend to read it so I’ll not have to put it down. But gosh, this wait is killing me!!!! Knowing the book is on my Kindle is tempting me every second of every day!
I don’t know why I was thinking most of the In Death books were somewhere around 280 pages (I guess because I just devour them so fast) but I was wrong. So I was just thinking the other day how I’d love to read a big fat In Death book so I could really overdose on Eve and Roarke and maybe be content to wait for the next one… then immediately thought it’s just not possible to od on them. And viola’ what an awesome surprise to get my order from TTP over the weekend and it’s a big fat 416 pages! See you all in a few days when I resurface…
hello all. I read all the Dallas books, plus short stories but wonder (I hope I don’t post spoilers here) if some of the characters in Obsession (the dead..or suspects) are mentioned in the older books. Eve talks about them, and other old cases. They are not ringing any bells in my memory. If they are I want to re-read these books. Thanks.
PS loving this read and looking so forward to how it all will get resolved.
The victims/targets are in Rapture, Conspiracy, Vengeance and Portrait.
Laura
Oooohhh, bringing back a Portrait character. I loved that book, and was almost in tears when Trueheart was kidnapped. Then again, I love ALL of them.
Rapture, Conspiracy and Portrait I got – which one was Vengeance? I missed that one!
(I mean which victim was in Vengeance :))
I think it’s should be judgement in death not vengeance. Because they talk about the victim Taj Kohli and about captain Roth and a couple of bad cops
I’m wrong they just mention things out of judgement in death, not a victim or target in obsession. So I don’t know why Laura mentioned vengeance. Because there are only 2 victims in obsession and 3 targets but none from vengeance as far as I can remember.
My answer was that the victims/TARGETS were in those books. I was thinking about Jamie when I wrote Vengeance, but of course that was Ceremony as Leslie points out below.
I’m sorry for the confusion!
Laura
Hi, actually I believe we first met Jamie in Ceremony. Vengeance was the one where
Roarke’s childhood friends were being killed.
And yes Leslie, you are completely correct. Will go back and fix again.
Thanks!
Laura
Thanks! I was trying to remember if Jamie had also appeared in Vengeance! Also thanks for the reminder of where Captain Roth came in. This book was definitely a fun walk down memory lane.
I finished listening to Obsession waaaaaaay early this morning, then staggered to bed. Need a re-listen to pinpoint all the reasons this book is now a favorite – it was fabulous! Loved bringing back so many past characters and the updates. The scary moments were perfect. Well done!
All I can say is….Wow!!! I read it slow ( Took 2 days ) This was the most anxious I think I’ve ever been while reading an In death novel!!! it had me on the edge of my seat, holding my breath at the end. I loved everything about this book and every character that was mentioned. I’m glad Hastings made it. (I liked his smart ass) Loved Bella and the diamond. haha! but the end of the book had me holding my breath!!!!! Thanks Nora for a wild ride!!!
Mine is still in the mail–with all this snow not getting deliveries–
so–HOW does Roarke think he can make Eve like cows???????????????????
Patti,
I hate to be mean to a woman waiting so patiently, but instead of the full explanation I’ll just say it has to do with workouts. It really is fun to read it yourself.
Laura
One more thing….. Nora I’m in awe of you genius and creativity!!!!!!!!! 🙂
Loved this story. …Thank You Nora for an amazing AMAZING story. Loved the Bella parts. .especially the baba and Mama shit. Expect some sort of sparkly shiny baba from Roarke. Soon….also the spinach smoothies…good cover for the candy bars….my own petty little peeve was my copy had “Harvo” printed. .drove me bonkers after the third time. Lol just my peeve. I loved the catching up with the previous characters. Loved seeing Jaime again and Hastings. …so Laura which one was your favorite character reappearance? Jaime or Hastings?
Well Done Nora…can’t wait for the next one…glad there are 2 more this year…
Hastings. Love him. And I felt like we’d seen Jamie not so long ago.
Laura
Wasn’t Jamie in Kindred?
I always love seeing Jamie!
How wonderful! Just posted 5 star review on Amazon where I am a Vine Voice. I just love these books!! I am so glad that as I get older time goes faster! 😉
What an amazing book! I think it’s the best one in the series yet. I really enjoyed seeing a more vulnerable side to Eve and loved seeing how her friendships have developed over the series. Thank yoy, Nora!
I loved this book! To pick a favorite part would be like picking a favorite book. This one took me back to New York to Dallas in feelings. I was so caught up, I never realized how long I was reading. I now want to go back and reread all the books. I had trouble remember who all the victims were. I usually reread the series before the new one comes out, but just didn’t have the time. Great Job and I can not wait until the next book.
Finally picked up the book this afternoon – I just couldn’t bring myself to go out yesterday. I think it was under 20 degrees with a wind chill. It was much warmer today (30-ish. Warmer?) so I got my book and a few other things and settled down back at home to immerse myself. Excellent. Just excellent. For some unknown reason, I like stories like this – crazy person thinks they’re personally involved in fairly famous person’s life. Does anyone remember Bob Randall’s book The Fan? Now I’m going to have to go dig that off one of the bookshelves and re-read it because this one gets passed to my niece tomorrow morning – well, later this morning. I’ll re-read it when she’s finished. Anyway, I just loved it. A little concerned there for Hastings (isn’t he a great character?), Nadine and Jamie – then the bullpen?! Sheesh. Of course, now I want pizza. Maybe for lunch …….
Happy to report that we’ve recruited another JD Robb fan, and my niece will be passing along Glory in Death tomorrow to a friend at work. We are legion. 🙂
‘Night everybody.
Whoa, what an ending!
I think I knew that nothing terrible would happen to Nadine (besides being fabulous and a dear friend of Eve’s she’s a wonderful plot tool 😉 ), but my heart was seriously in my throat when she went after Hastings! I love the way his human side comes out almost against his will, reminds me of my favorite murder cop in that way. I wonder if we’ll see more of Matilda in the future. That pair intrigues me… Loved too Bella’s naughty shit, so very true to life with a toddler.
Now to go reread Rapture again…
Another fabulous InDeath book! I love some of the wonderful moments in this book! The interaction between Bella and Eve was priceless! Eve’s panick at Bella sticking the “ba-ba” in her mouth was hilarious! I also love that Eve is becoming more comfortable with the baby. It was also nice to see Jamie, he has grown so much since we first met him. My only “I wish” was at the end. I wish we could have seen more of Feeny’s reaction to the hostage situation. Also wish that Mira had been more demonstrative. Other than that, it was another gem in the collection that I’m sure I will reread many many times. Congratulations, Ms. Roberts on another job well done.
So many things to love so out of order; dragon sex, Bella and the diamond, the teenage girls reactions: OMG! Nadine in a face mask, living the dream, any time the squad is showcased, eves link code to Roarke. I’m sure I will remember more after I hit post. This is a top 5 favorite thank you Nora. I clink my glass to you and toast to 40 more
I couldn’t hold out til the weekend like I promised so I put everything on hold and devoured the book in one sitting… I mean, how can I put it down once I started? This book was so intense, my heart was in overdrive most of the time! Lol. That ending though… I definitely did not expect that. Such emotions, such love and compassion in such a strong woman. I love all the sides of Eve we see in this book. Thank you, Nora, for webbing such a wonderful story.
Wishing everyone a little bit of sunshine and warmth from California!
Ps. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bella gets her own giant “ba ba” from Roarke some time in the future.
I am only on chapter three as something keeps stopping me from reading. I am going to lock myself in and bar the door soon. They will probably call the swat team for barricading the door. I can see it on the news now, me coming out with my hands up and my kindle clutched in my hand. I couldn’t read anymore until I came here to make sure that nothing bad happens to anyone I really like. Now I can read without so much worry. So happy to read also that Nora has no plans to stop writing this series! Thanks for giving us all something to look forward to!
Everything I could ask for in an author: great characters, great story, fantastic writing style, and prolific! Just one question: is anybody else confused by the “hot” shower at 102 degrees? I measured mine one day and it was at 112! 🙂
Every since the first chapter was released, I have been more anxious then ever to read this one! It was not a disappointment! I loved all the characters we met who have idolized Eve, especially the boy who wants to be a cop. Mason Tobias. I hope we see him again in the future! This book was so fast paced! it’s hard to believe everything happened in just a week! The part with Hastings was great. As soon as she started talking about the studio I got a sick feeling in my stomach because I knew who it was. So glad it turned out the way it did. I never really had a favorite In Death, but now I do! I loved everything about this one!! What a great addition to one of my favorite addictions!
Holy sh*t this book was amazing. I stayed up all night just to read it, and now I’m rereading it, slowly. Favorite parts: the shower scene after Eve had her workout with Crusher (YUM), Eve’s interaction with Bella, Jenkinson telling Eve that nobody f*ucks with their LT and to “deal with it,” the scenes with Dirk, and all the creepy yet hilarious letters from Eve’s obsessors. Always enjoy Eve and Roarke having breakfast/dinner, Galahad, Peabody’s love of pink, and Leonardo calling his family his “girls.” Ugh, so many gems in this book, can’t wait until the next one.
You know, I was ALMOST *ick* over the color pink for Peabody’s Magic Coat – but then I remembered it was Peabody. And now, to see her wardrobe, or her accessories, designed around matching the pink coat are hilarious!
I had pinned it down to one of 2 areas that the killer was from, immediately thought it was a female, then dismissed idea, as would have been back to back female killers in the books. But, once they got angles of jawbone, nose, & started talking about shoe sizes and approximate height, they were describing me! It’s my shoe size, I’m an in shorter than killer, but know for prominent cheekbones and eyebrow arch. LOL, that does NOT make me a killer!
The book hit in so many good points; Eve and Roarke’s marriage is becoming even stronger, her circle of friends are becoming closer, her bullpen of “good cops” are her family and they’ll all protect one another, her caring for Feeney, Dr. and Mr. Mira is very important to her and she is less hesitant to show those feelings, Mavis, Leonardo and Bella hold such a special place in her heart! The pages with Bella had me laughing out loud. Bella’s ability to flirt had been mentioned in “Concealed in Death”, but for her to be left alone with Eve & her trying her “whiles” on Eve to get the big diamond Eve wears, is too, too funny! Then Eve curses and like all toddlers Bella immediately repeats (reminds me of my daughter and granddaughter at that age). Only Mavis would have a daughter that ‘Baubles’ would be apart of her limited vocabulary! Eve checking on them, Jamie and his mother,Mavis after the attack, all goes to show how her heart is growing and expanding with love!
I had the deep pleasure of reading 2 chapters of the book to my cousin Toni Oliver, prior to her passing away on the morning of the 11th. She was an avid “in Death” fan and had even got her elderly mother hooked on the books. She smiled, before the pain meds took effect and whispered “Thanks”.
I apologize for any misspellings. I’m having badly needed first of 2 cataract surgeries on the 17th of this month. I’m depending on spellchek to catch obsession any typos, but you can never tell. I bought 2 of the older in Death books as audio bFestive which was greatooks, as I was warned I was to rest my eyes immediately after surgery and cannot got immediately back to my 2-3 books + 4-5 magazines a week. I can’t stand to be,away from Eve/Roarke and the gang too long, so I bought the audio books.
Anyone who hasn’t read Obsession yet, I hope I didn’t give too many spoilers to ruin it for you. It it terrific, especially following Festive, which was great reading as well. Enjoy! Bon Appetite! (I get hungry for the in death books). I’m off to start my first reread of Obsession!
I have to say the one thing that really disappoints me in these books is that, they are, what, 40 years in the future and people STILL can’t eat what they want. Peabody has to watch every cupcake. Every calorie still counts. You would think, by then, they would have the eat all you want pill figured out! Come on Roarke, put one of your labs on it!
I love that! The eat all you want pill. I’m with you. come on Roarke and invent it. lol!
Loved, loved, LOVED. What I enjoy so much about this series is the continuing threads, the evolution of relationships both personally and professionally. Mira pointing out how many people Eve had “collected” and how was brilliant, as was the reaction of the “family” when they were in bomb danger.
Rereading tonight after blowing through it hanging on the edge of my seat last night!
Loved the book. Does Nora get the kind of fan mail that Eve does? Thinking people know her, want to work with her, etc.
Boy, Teresa, what a scary thought. Hope not for Nora’s sake.
YES! Yes, I do.
That’s just scary, Nora. No wonder, then, the incredible detail! Nothing like first-hand experience to make it read so real. While I’m thrilled with every opportunity to drop into one of your stories, I’m always happy to go back to my own normal, such as it is.
Goodness, Nora, I would LOVE to send you fan mail – just not the creepy fan mail that Eve was highlighting. I can’t believe the reaction of some of those people when she showed up at her doorstep – especially the two former policewomen (and personality wise, totally night and day, but you can see why both of them were NOT cut out to be cops). Just know that I LOVE Nora’s writing, and although I’ve never sent fan mail to ANY author, if I did, it would be to you, Nora. Love your books!
I am with the majority of commentors on this thread so far in that I loved this book. It had everything from the suspenseful whodunit, to getting to see the secondary characters, our favorite couple growing even closer when you didn’t think that was possible and of course the humor. I agree with all the funny comments mentioned above, but I especially loved when Roarke tagged Eve at the end when she was with Lottie and her men and answered with, “Hi Baby” then proceeded with, “Sweetheart sorry I didn’t get back to you…” then ended it with “Later Honey.” I was trying to picture the look that had to be on Roarke’s face hearing that! LOL
I’ve been wishing since Portrait for Dirk Hastings to reappear — then was terrified when he appeared on the hit list. Hope we see him again! Loved this book, and am already looking forward to its successors.
I received Obsession In Death on Wednesday, stayed up the whole night reading it, I finished it at 2 am. I loved it. I’m going to go to Turn The Page website to order the books that burned inn the fire I had. Question Laura, can I pre-order Devoted In Death from Turn The Page now? I’m going to buy all my books from Turn The Page. You asked if your readers read anyone else, here are my favorite authors: JD Robb, Nora Roberts, Catherine Coulter, Jude Deveraul, Julie Garwood, Elizabeth Lowell and can’t remember the authors name but the Twilight Series and Hunger Game Series and thanks to my 8th grade english teacher who turned me onto Edgar Allen Poe. The first book I read was The Wolf The Dove by Kathleen Woodiess and I reread it once a year.
Not Laura, but yes, you can pre-order Devoted In Death from TTP.
Woo hoo! Glad that came up in the comments, I hadn’t even thought about it, but I just pre-ordered the Nook book.
“WWED” – I’m still laughing.
Really enjoyed all the above comments! I had to wait 2 days to get to the bookstore to purchase my Obsession in death. Had the date on my calendar for months! WOW! what a super story! Whenever I start a new in Death, I can’t wait for a scene with Eve and Bella. Well, this one was well worth the wait. What a little charmer she is! I’m so glad to see Eve becoming more comfortable with her, and no longer waiting for her to explode or something. Then all the referrals to previous cases and characters were so special. I too, enjoyed meeting Hastings the first time and seeing him again and with a special lady was great. For the longest time, I was afraid the killer was going to be a cop, or someone we knew from say, the Commanders’ office or someone like that; I’m so glad it turned out to be someone we hadn’t met before!! What an amazing mind you have Ms Roberts! And time for so MANY more books!! With the novellas, this is number 50 on my bookshelf. I have room for lots more! Can’t wait for the next one!
OHH MYYY GOODNESS. Just finished Obsession.. Wow Wow Wow. Had me so tensed up there at the end. I will say that the interview with Farmer had me laughing so hard my eyes teared up and I had to put the book down until I could stop laughing. I love how each book gets better and better. Hope to see Hastings again in future books. The only thing that sucks huge is that I have to wait for the next one. Lol. 3 wks before Obsession hit, i started re reading the series from the beginning (including any Novellas that fell in chronological order of the storyline) I read 20 books before Obsession arrived at my doorstep. Really helped when the past cases were mention because they were fresh in my brain. Now I havw ro read the rest of them. Lol thank you for this awesome series with such an amazing cast of characters. Look forward to the next.
I had the exact same reaction! And then she turns around and believes essentially the same thing of Eve and Peabody! The end of the conversation had trying to suppress a belly laugh, since I was reading in bed, and my husband would not have been amused if I woke him up laughing hysterically, so I had to sneak into the bathroom to let it out. And it was needed just then. The interview before that left me sad, for all the reasons Peabody and Eve said. And the fact that the interview was needed because her MOTHER wrote the letters to Eve….I felt bad for the mother as well. Maybe Mom was a little TOO caught up in the 4th generation thing.
Loved Eve’s scenes with Bella. This was the first time they’ve been alone since Treachery in Death. Really hope the next book has Bella’s first birthday party.
Finished Obsession last night ~ happy to get back immersed in the Eve & Roarke milieu. I’ve read every book, starting many years ago when I picked up Innocent in the airport bookstore. Loved it and discovered it was a series so immediately got started with Naked. I’ve read most of the anthologies and novellas, those that I can get my hands on anyway.
Wonderful premise in Obsession, very gripping. As always I am truly impressed with Nora’s imagination and detail. Not to mention her ability to weave the mayhem & drama with the witty & fanciful that keep me entertained. One of my favorite bits of silliness in Obsession was Eve mocking Roarke’s accent when she thought he was laying it on pretty thick. I love the funny parts and the way they defuse the tension.
I’ve introduced yet another friend to the In Death family ~ it’s fun to share something wonderful. Thank you again Nora for a tremendously entertaining addition to the world that is Eve. Did you foresee this as a series from the first?
I could not put this one down! It was so great to revisit so many characters from previous books. It was like a little gift to all the long time readers.
There was a part of me who was hoping the killer was someone we knew such as Harvo. Make the characters question how well they really know someone. I do, however, understand that might be a bit too much.
So I haven’t finished reading the book, in fact have just started but I have a question. Is there someone who can say or somewhere we can find out which cases are referenced in this book? I am only on the 1st murder but I don’t recognize from what book the Ferguson murder is from, the other lawyer in the victim’s firm. Any info is appreciated.
Thanks!
The first victim was in Rapture, the second in Conspiracy.
Laura
Like everyone else, this is my favorite series and this one was one of the best. I have recommended this series to so many. Susan Erickson’s narration brings the characters to life as well and allows me to re-listen whenever I need a few weeks of delight while doing chores.
In Obsession, I was on the edge of my seat- as worried that Nora had had similar experiences, as I was for Eve’s friends and family. It was a treat to revisit old cases and since I laughed aloud often my husband pulled out an earplug to ask if it was Eve and Peabody or Eve and Roarke bantering. That time it was Peabody, “living the dream.” Memorable.
I am so grateful that you manage to update this series so very often and still manage to develop new novels and trilogies for those of us that gobble them up with pleasure.
I just finished “The Book” minutes ago. I’m not writing a book report, I just want to say, ‘Wow’! This book is great. I loved all the former characters, I loved the story line, I thought the ending absolutely one of the best. A little more gushing here and I will be finished, I really like where Eve and Roarke are in their relationship, but it doesn’t stop me from enjoying reading how they got there. I too loved Eve and Bella, a great laugh in the middle of everything. Thanks Nora! An absolute favorite!
I think this was one of the best of the In Death series! Grabbed me right from the first page and I just couldn’t put it down! Bravo JD!!!!
I *may* or *may not* have skipped studying for a major exam because I could not stop reading this book. So many things I loved about it.
I just finished Obsession in Death and I loved it. I especially liked Bella and her ba-ba and the way Eve let Roarke know she was in trouble. “Later honey”.
I just finished obsession in death, which I received from the Newton Public Library. I had to wait a week and a half after the book came in because the Boston area was enjoying our many back to back snowstorms.
Thank you Nora for an enjoyable read, I look forward to Devoted in Death and The Liar. Question Nora after you write your books do you ever read them like your readers do in pure enjoyment or do you go on to the next book you are writing ?
I’ve read the book several time in editing, proofing. When I’m done I want to read someone else’s book!
I always get the audiobook of each In Death. I love Susan Eriksen’s interpretation in the narration, unlike some narrators, it’s obvious she’s read the book prior to performing it and she does a good job. But I always have to get the actual book from the library and read it, too. Sometimes you miss a nugget in the narration that makes you think, “Oh! That’s why!”, or when I found out the spelling of Morris’s first name, that was important. Just got my turn at the library and already found a nugget: “She opened for him, a fascinating flower with thorns he respected and risked.” Pure gold and told so much.
Thank you so much for your comments about the person reading the book. Reading them and other people’s positive experience has helped me decide to try it out. I have want to try an audio book but didn’t want to have my experience with a favorite author ruined by a bad narrator.
Susan Erikson does an amazing job of interpreting all of the In Death characters. You can’t go wrong by starting your audiobook experience with her. I also both read and listen to every JD Robb book. Slightly off topic but the narrator of Three Sisters Island trilogy is also very good. And if you find you like Susan Erickson, she also narrates the Key trilogy.
Absolutely LOVED this book!!! It now rates as one of my all time favorite in Death books. Really enjoyed reading it and seeing the old characters come back. Enjoy seeing the evolution and growth Eve has had as a woman, wife and partner. Great characters!!!! The only bad thing?? I read them too fast!!!
I just finished it yesterday in audiobook form. It was awesome.
Will admit, it was a little slow for me, I won’t lie. For myself, I didn’t really get into it until Nadine was attacked. Then it was like, here we go!!!
But the beginning was good too. I liked how Dallas actually had that brief moment of decision that she’d turn down the case after all. Let’s you know how far things have gotten.
And then there was the ending. I mean, woo.
I think part of me wondered when this book came out that it might be a man… but thinking it now, it was probably too obvious a step to take. So it’s no wonder it turned out to be a female unsub.
All in all, lovely. I might have to read it over or at least jump to my fave part and read from there.
Absolutely loved it! Just like every other Nora book I’ve ever read. Awesome job! Actually listening to Festive again just to relive the whole shopping/party experience. It was great! One thing I’ve been thinking…we haven’t heard anything on the candy thief in a while. Anyone else miss him/her?
Again, another great book Nora!!
Nice write-up, in case you didn’t see it : http://hellogiggles.com/books-female-detectives
Reading Obsession and couldn’t stop laughing at Eve’s terror of the correspondences. The Morgan one, hilarious. I could just see her face and Roarke’s amusement. I love these two’s dynamic they’re so perfect for each other.
