Secrets in Death teaser thread

We finally made it to a week out from the Secrets in Death release and you know what that means:  teaser time!   Are you doing ok?  Did you at least enjoy the summer (winter in the southern hemisphere) or wish it away? Is it mean to say I had to reread Secrets to come up with teasers?  Probably.  But I only speak the truth. 🙂

As always these are gentle teasers, no plot reveals, no mystery solved, just little nuggets to be on the lookout for.  I’ll post one a day through Thursday and update with the date.  Comments are absolutely welcome, spoilers are not.

And here we go:

Monday, August 28
After Eve contemplates small humans in smaller spaces, she ponders the puzzle of human conversation recorded for entertainment.

Tuesday, August 29
Before I post this one, I just have to comment that the majority of guesses guesses yesterday were way off the mark.  Way off.  Off enough that I had to quell the Cranky Publicist from replying– except once.  And now, Teaser #2:
Roarke and Summerset have a “well done, grasshopper” moment before images of Summerset nearly ruin a pie moment.  Oh and Scary Roarke may have met his match.

Wednesday, August 30
In which we learn Peabody has a fishing face, Kyung is as devious as he is diplomatic (aka not an asshole) and Trina gives good threats.

Cranky Publicist note:  I’m working from the beach right now, the worst possible place to feel cranky.  But that’s how I feel — frustrated by all the guesses/reader wishes that center around procreation.  As I mention at the top, these are not spoilers, they are teasers. Nuggets to look for — like the Easter eggs in Disney movies — as we move toward Eve solving the case.  They seem cryptic now, but should make sense in context.

For me, any changes for characters — whether it’s expanding what we know about them or new directions for them — constitute spoilers and I’m not about to give anything like that away in these posts. I think that’s part of the fun of reading a series like the In Deaths, letting the major changes/shifts come in without warning.

We’ve got posts everywhere on this blog about no babies so please stop guessing that — for anyone.  Please read the answers Nora’s given for 22 years in our Index O’Answers.  Take your guesses outside the box and then see how they match up with the real thing.

And now, today’s teaser:

Good TV/vid will always have loyal fans, Peabody included.  Roarke takes a linguistic journey to a youthful memory.

September 1
In a change of pace, a bonus quote:
“You were born to be a cop, and I was born to be something else entirely.  I’d likely still be that, in only small ways that entertained me, if not for you.  You finished the process, we’ll say.”  Roarke

PS From Weary Nora*:
Laura and I really want these little bits from upcoming books to be fun for you guys. We want them to be fun for us, too. And honestly, truly, sincerely, the continued barrage of baby, baby, baby, babysitting, pregnancy eats away at the fun for us.

I honestly don’t know how I can make it more clear. IF–and that’s a very enormous if–if, if, if, Eve ever gets pregnant in the series it will be because I’ve decided it’s time to wrap it up. It will be the end. The end. I’m NEVER going to change my mind on this, as I’ve already stated countless times. I made this decision when I started the series, for all the reasons I’ve laid out before.

Someone else, at some point, MAY have a baby. But Laura certainly wouldn’t give that away on the blog. NO ONE is having a baby in Secrets. No one is pregnant. No one is babysitting.

The series is about murder and investigation, and yes, relationships. It has some humor, but the series is NOT a romantic comedy, and never will be.

I really hope you enjoy Secrets In Death. When you read it, I think you’ll see just how clever Laura’s little teases have been.

*Trademark pending 🙂

Echoes in Death teaser thread

We must be less than a week out from release if I’m putting together teasers for Echoes in Death!  As always these do not spoil the case in any way, just consider them some nuggets you’ll unearth along the way.

As a refresher, the Echoes in Death excerpt is here.

And I recently shared the Echoes in Death commercial from St. Martin’s Press on social media. I think the universal response has been “Cool!!!”

I’ll add a teaser to this post the next three days.   Come back and check tomorrow.

Feb. 1

Three small things:
1) When Peabody sees how Eve dressed for the charity ball, she immediately coins a new word.
2) Sticky buns get to everyone, even Eve.
3) New closets can get to her too.

St. Martin’s Press created this fun infographic for In Death basics. Some readers commented on Facebook that there are 54 published pieces in the series, but SMP took the facts from the Did You Know feature on the website where I deal with full-length books only. There’s so much more to add, but for a piece on the basics, I think it’s fun.

Now for today’s teasers.

Feb. 2
Two things that come and go quickly, one that is dear to my heart:
1. What do an inventor, a tragic Greek hero and an egg-laying mammal have in common?  Peabody will help you out on that one.
2. Dr. Mira is braver than Eve.
3. Who is Nora’s border collie?  (That may take some time.)

Feb. 3
Three more passing things:
1. A snowy night brings out Eve’s protectiveness to a certain butler, for pragmatic reasons.
2. A snowy night is a good time to fill in pop culture gaps.
3. Some gifts are sheer perfection.

That’s it for the teasers — a lot of this book is the case and you want to encounter that at your own pace.  Come Feb. 7 you can discover the rest for yourself.

Laura

Notes:  This is the final reminder of the Echoes in Death sweepstakes from St. Martin’s Press (open to readers in the US and Canada — except Quebec).  The grand prize is a leather coat and all the details are here.

There’s also time to  submit your pre-order receipt for a limited edition pop-art In Death poster.  Again, as this is Nora’s US publisher the offer is open only to readers in the US and Canada (ex. Quebec). Unfortunately rules on sweepstakes are imposed country by country and it’s just not possible to open this to international readers — as much as we’d like to.  For information and how to submit your receipt, please click here.

Apprentice in Death teasers

We’re a week out from the September 6 release date, so I thought I’d share some teasers.  As always, these are not spoilers that reveal major plot points, but some nuggets to look out for as you race through the book.

Apprentice in Death cover

If you need a refresher, you can read the prologue here and the first chapter here.

I’ll update for at least four days this week, maybe five, maybe not.

Monday, August 29:
In a busy Chapter 2 we have:
– A little joke that goes wide of the mark
– Office designs that may or may not suck
– Some major e-geekiness from Roarke, plus he gets to act out a fantasy

Tuesday, August 30
– Some decorating decisions are made.
– Much geek joy results from Roarke’s chapter 2 work, Peabody describes it best.
– Someone gets a ride in the DLE and wants one when they are available.

Wednesday, August 31
– There’s a quiet Eve & Roarke moment amid the chaos of the case in Chapter 8 that offers a little glimpse of a younger Eve.
– Marriage proposals can happen anywhere/anytime.  And don’t involve characters we know.

Thursday, September 1
– It seems Nadine may like rock ‘n roll.
– Roarke feels torn by connections
– Mira misinterprets Eve’s term for an energy boost shake.  To Eve’s embarrassment.

Friday, September 2
– Roarke’s Christmas gift pays off
– Birthday party, Mavis style.

Thanks for playing along.  Curious to see what you all think when you see the teasers in context.  Because honestly?  Most of the guesses are way off.  But that only makes it more fun.  Back on Tuesday to open the discussion thread.

Brotherhood in Death teasers

Less than a week until you have the chance to read the first of the 2016 In Deaths — Brotherhood in Death.

brotherhood

First, a brief summary:

When Brotherhood opens, Mr. Mira just learned his cousin Edward arranged a secret meeting with a real estate agent about their late grandfather’s West Village brownstone, despite the promise they both made to keep it in the family. He heads to the house to confront Edward about it, and gets a blunt object to the back of the head.

When Eve arrives on the scene, he reports the instant before the attack, he’d seen Edward in a chair, bruised and bloody, but when he came to, Mr. Mira found himself alone in the house. With the mess cleaned up and the security disks removed, there’s nothing left behind but a few traces for forensics to analyze.

As a former lawyer, judge, and senator, Edward Mira mingled with the elite and crossed paths with criminals, making enemies on a regular basis. He also made some very close friends behind closed and locked doors.  As the case builds Eve shines a light on the dirty deals and dark motives behind the disappearance of a powerful man, one part of a brotherhood of equally powerful men with secrets to keep.

Now for a few gentle teasers.  I won’t spoil the case, I won’t give away big details.  These are just a few tidbits to look for as the case unfolds.

I’ll add one teaser each day between January 27-30 so bookmark the thread and check in when you can.

January 27
A two-fer:  within a few pages we learn Roarke exercised some restraint in the house design AND a suggested addendum to the Homicide credo.

January 28
A second two-fer:  Peabody has a much better locker room experience in Brotherhood than she did in Treachery.  Oh, and Whitney relays his wife’s interesting opinions on a matter close to the case.

January 29
Eve shares her theories about dolls.  Peabody may be scarred for life.
Oh, and remember Roarke’s reaction to coming upon Will Banner? A couple tables are turned this go round.

January 30
Dolls show up again. This time more people are scarred.
Eve and Peabody show off more than detective skills on scene.

That’s it, guys.  The book will be yours soon enough.

Devoted in Death teasers

devoted coverOne week until release day in the US and Canada (nine days in the UK, Ireland, SA, AUS and NZ).

As has become habit over the last few releases, I’ll post one teaser a day until Friday.  These will not spoil the mystery or give away huge plot points — instead they are things to look for when you devour the newest addition to the In Death series.

Please scroll down for the teasers.  Laura

September 8:

A Peabody teaser!  Early on she dares fate when  she corrects Eve. And we get  a little glimpse of the recent Christmas with Peabody’s family.

September 9:

Will Eve acquiesce when coffee is forbidden?  Will she learn alternate ways of dealing with stress?  Stay tuned!

September 10:

What does Roarke need to be the richest man in the world?  And why would he need to add an entry in the Marriage Rules?

September 11:

Time confounds Eve on many levels.  And in a squad update, look for some fish out of water.

Stars of Fortune — cover and synopsis

Stars of Fortune coverIt’s never too early to plan, is it?  So mark your calendar for November 3, 2015 (in the US and Canada) for the start of The Guardians Trilogy.  I’ve only been able to bug bits and pieces of the whole out of the creator, but it sounds like we’re going to have a fabulous time meeting the Guardians.

Synopsis below.

Laura

To celebrate the rise of their new queen, three goddesses of the moon created three stars, one of fire, one of ice, one of water. But then they fell from the sky, putting the fate of all worlds in danger. And now three women and three men join forces to pick up the pieces…

Sasha Riggs is a reclusive artist, haunted by dreams and nightmares that she turns into extraordinary paintings. Her visions lead her to the Greek island of Corfu, where five others have been lured to seek the fire star. Sasha recognizes them, because she has drawn them: a magician, an archaeologist, a wanderer, a fighter, a loner.

All on a quest.

All with secrets.

Sasha is the one who holds them together—the seer. And in the magician, Bran Killian, she sees a man of immense power and compassion. As Sasha struggles with her rare ability, Bran is there to support her, challenge her, and believe in her.
But Sasha and Bran are just two of the six. And they all must all work together as a team to find the fire star in a cradle of land beneath the sea. Over their every attempt at trust, unity, and love, a dark threat looms. And it seeks to corrupt everything that stands in its way of possessing the stars……

Obsession in Death teasers

obsession small - Copy - CopyWe’re six days out from the Obsession in Death release and I thought I’d share some teasers about the book.  Not outright spoilers, but things to pay attention to while you devour Obsession.

I’ll add to this post on Friday (2/6), Sunday (2/8) and Monday (2/9) so stay tuned.  ~Laura

Wednesday, February 4:

We learn Eve gets fan mail — and did so even before the media storm that was the Icove.

Candy and coffee are two different things in Eve’s mind.  And Feeney is a crafty man with his own cache of one of those things.

When Eve’s squad closes ranks, they dig down deep and sacrifice.  You’ll be surprised.

And I’m going to borrow Peabody’s quote about working with Eve Dallas for the next time someone asks me about working with JD Robb.  “I’m living the dream.”  🙂

Friday, February 6

Remember, these are just some things (with my interpretation) to look for as you read.

We see a completely off-duty Nadine.  Eve has an apt name for Nadine’s time off.

We learn that Roarke is working on Eve’s fear of cows.

We revisit one of my particular favorite people.

Sunday, February 8

Det. Carmichael has an interesting way to stay motivated in her fitness during the holidays.

Eve shares a small part of what pushed her to be a cop with Peabody.

Sexual-free-for-all comes up in an interesting context.

Bella wants a new toy.

Monday, February 9

The teasers flow through the book in sequence and yesterday’s brought us pretty near the end of the case so I’m going to post just one. Soon enough you’ll read them all on your own.

We learn that Summerset has been known to…reminisce.
