It’s been quiet here on the blog, but the first release of the year is right around the corner, so time to turn on the lights, dust off the posts and dive right in. If you are not a person who likes any information about a new book, if you prefer to let the story unfold at your own pace, in your own time, then skip this post.
If you like to know some tidbits about a new book, I’ll be posting some teasers about the first In Death of the year — Concealed in Death (in stores on February 18) — throughout the week. These aren’t going to be too specific in terms of dialogue or scenes because the fun is finding them on your own.
First, Concealed is set in early December, Just after the Irish have headed back to Ireland post-Thanksgiving. For those of you who love to see her pick up gifts, it’s still too early in the season for Eve to Christmas “shop.”

Keep an eye out for how many trees are in Eve and Roarke’s home. There are many — all decorated by Summerset and his elves.
But they decorate the one in their bedroom and we get to see them carve out the time to do so — and share how they celebrated Christmas before meeting each other.
I’ll post another little bit — in this space — on Tuesday morning.
TEASER #2:
We’ve seen how Roarke offers hints about what Eve should wear, or leaves something out for her. In Concealed, the day after decorating the tree, he outlines an entire outfit for her. She’s surprised because it’s all black but he tells her the lines and the textures to it will make her look “just a little dangerous.”
Eve has a chance to put that look to use within hours.
But before she does she learns about Peabody’s hobby of ass-watching.
Next one late tomorrow. Then the last one on Thursday.
2-13-14 Weather delayed Teaser 3 so here are 3 and 4:
#3 Mavis tells a story that shows us why she’s already a great mom.
#4 Garnet DeWinter, NYPSD’s new forensic anthropologist, is as good at her job as Eve is at hers, but I think no one ever tells Garnet what to wear. Concealed is a good first round between Eve and Dr. DeWinter, and any skirmishes going forward will be interesting.
And a bonus: Dennis Mira ensures Eve’s hands stay warm.
When Concealed is officially released, how about we open a thread for discussion so people have a place to talk freely about the story? That work for you?
Laura
I am counting down the days until I can purchase my Kindle copy of Concealed In Death!
I can hardly wait for the book!!!! I remember in the other “in death” books, that Eve is not a real big shopper and hates Christmas. Hopefully Roarke can change her mind alittle bit on that notion. Hurry bring on the book!!!!
Really looking forward to the newest In Death installment. I just returned from a road trip from Georgia to my Mom’s house in Texas. My older daughter chose the audio book for the trip and she picked Fantasy in Death so I’m fully in Eve Dallas world and ready for a new story. I loved the last one and may have to pick it back up while waiting for my pre-ordered signed copy to arrive. I ordered from B&N because I have that membership.
Thank you for the information.
I just love all your “Death” books. Have them all. Could never wait for the paperbacks to come out so always ordered the hardback; now I have a Kindle Fire and always pre-order so I will always get them.
Thank you!!!
I have it preordered on my nook app! I cannot wait to get it in hardcover from Turn The Page in the mail too!
Can’t wait counting the days
OMG I can hardly wait. I read the series out of order the first time as I collected them thru the bookstore, swap meets, the computer. I started inthe middle cause my sister in law said I would enjoy the In Death Series since I was such a Nora fan. I am so totally addicted. I am now re reading the series n order. I’m on book 20 now. I’ve been ill the last year and my oh my what a blessing it is to have Dallas and Roarke to help me thru this lung thing I’m having. When finished I’ll totally need a Dallas and Roarke AA meeting. but it will be called D and R AA meeting. Come on Feb 18th. Love ya Nora/JD.
Looking forward to reading this soon!
I have the release date marked on my calendar! Can’t wait! I have all the books & continually read them!
I cant wait for the new book…..how i wish nora would come to melbourne, australia for a book signing !!!
I wish she would too! Am a huge fan and hang out for each book.
I love the In Death series. I look forward to the Christmas stories am fascinated by Eves horror of recieving presents. keep ip the good work J.D.
Love it when we see pieces of Roarke and Eve building their relationship. Can’t wait for the book!
I love the In Death books! My all time favorite series. Rereading the series again for the 5th time. Love the audio versions too. Susan Erickson does a awesome job with all the different characters. I wish I could “shop” like Eve does or not shop, but purchases!!
From the first moment my sister-in-law loaned me an audio copy of Strangers in Death, I was totally hooked. I started downloading them all on my Nook so I could read from the beginning. Then I realized that the audio books, read by Susan Erickson, brought them more to life for me, and I now only get them on audio if I can. I can’t wait for the next one and will be at Barnes and Noble as soon as it comes out. Thank you so much for creating such a thrilling story series. Hope they will go on for years to come.
Have all of the In Death books in E-format and have read every one of them five times. Just don’t get tired of them. Have all of Nora’s series too along with many others, won’t quit until I have every one of her books in my e-library. No one can write like Nora.
Me too Susan, but have trouble getting one or two of them!!
I LOVE the in Death series. I’ve listened to them all (they are great for my commute). I can’t wait to get Concealed in Death. I’m waiting for Dallas and Rourke to have a baby…….
Don’t wish that too hard! When they do, that’s the end of the series from what I’ve read.
They have plenty of time, of course, so I’m not too worried at the moment.
I listen to the books. I have the whole series and enjoy them over and over. I find new little details each time I hear them. Can’t wait for each upcoming book.
I know all I need to Know. > THE Author<
I await with baited breath..lol. I love these books and can hardly stand the wait for the new release. I am thinking perhaps a late St. Valentine’s day gift to myself.
Counting down the days. Think I will reread Thankless this week.
Just recently repurchased Naked in Death because my copy was stolen and decided to start reading them again from the beginning. I have loved this series since I read them the first of 4 times through. Can not wait for Concealed.
NO BABY! Nora’s said more than once that a baby would be the end of the series!! Got the audio and book on pre-order, can hardly wait. Laura, are you entertaining guesses about who’s sharing this books with Eve and Roarke?
I love the teasers! I am so looking forward to the book. It comes out 2days before my 66th birthday. I’m treating myself to the HC & NOOK book! How Eve Dallas with Roarke and rest of teams help is fascinating. Even better is watching them learn to let go and make their own marriage rules & love each other more. The backstories of the different team members are always interesting, as well. Keep it up!
I love the Death books, however, I prefer them on audio. I just love listening to them. I seems to bring it to life.
Me, too, Faye! Susan Ericksen makes it come alive.
can’t wait for the book to come out! I have a copy on reserve for my local library and will be getting the hard back from my personal collection in April for my birthday. I love the entire series and continuously reread it. Once is never enough with the death series
I have all of the in death books the first on I read was Holiday in Death and I just had to go back and start from the begining. I love how Eve always get all of the old saysing backwards and when Roake corrects her she come back with her own brand of logic that is hard to argue with. Plus her soft spot for Peabody when the where following up on a lead and Peabody was talking about needing that Popping Pink lip dye….and Eve brought it for her…I cant want for the next book.
I am enthralled by all of this fantastic authors books! I try out other writers, but always come back to our Nora!! Just love the way she writes!!
I got to read it early 🙂 you guys are going to enjoy it.
Laura, what is the name of the book that has their first Christmas? I am thinking of the one where they decorate their first tree, in their bedroom. It is so sweet and I wanted to re-read it.
That’s Holiday in Death.
Laura
Ok, I figured that out and have read that. What was the second Christmas book? I beleive that this will be their third year together, right?
Laura,
Please make Thursday’s tease a really good one! Has to hold us until next week when book comes out. I saw on the Official Page, that some Kindle and audio book members had it already! My NOOK didn’t have early download, my HC wasn’t mailed to me early. Amazon.com and audio book vendor should be chastised, for jumping the Official Date!
I am also counting the days til Tuesday and can’t wait to read this one. I will put down whatever I am reading and start this one!
Pre ordered a signed copy from Barnes and Noble can’t wait to read this book. Loved all the little teasers. I always love it when a new character is introduced. Can’t wait to see the dynamics between Eve and DeWinter. And love when Eve and Dennis Mira are together.
Thank you so much Laura! I can’t wait until Tuesday! Still rereading the series, currently almost finished with Creation In Death. So much fun…
Looking forward to the release and I would welcome a discussion thread.
I love the teasers, it becomes like a treasure hunt thru the book when it comes out, to try to spot them. Would love this practice for all her new books!
I love Dennis Mira! Too bad if they are gloves, they won’t be “magic” gloves.
But if Dennis lends Eve his gloves maybe she won’t lose them. She would want to return them to him.
It is so funny how Eve does not like to “shop”, she just picks up “things” here and there and not from stores. I almost cried at the Bonus where Dennis Mira makes sure her hands are warm. I may have to take a vacation day on Tuesday!!!
Thanks for the teasers, Laura. Would love a discussion link.
I love the ‘ In Death Series ‘ I pre-ordered from Amazon + have to wait until 18th !!!! so not sure how someone got it early !! THANKYOU JD ROBB YOU ARE A VERY GIFTED WRITER !!!!
I Love Dennis Mira. He is such a great father figure for Eve (and Roarke). I think he is a good example of what a good father or friend will do for others. Like the scarf that Eve got for him, he wears it when she can see it. It really means something to him.
Laura, I would love to have someplace to post my thoughts. I have been and Eve addict for about 4 years now. It is nice to have others to talk to about my favorite books. I have always loved stories that don’t end in just one book. I have read most of Nora’s trilogies, no matter the genra. I enjoy In Death the best because I love a good mystery and a good detective story. Plus, all the back story is what I really like. I sometimes wish there could be a little more of that. I love the characters and enjoy spending time with them. I would like to see more interaction between Eve and Feeny towards the family/father/trainer issue. Also, are we ever going to see anything more about Webster and the Chief from Olympus?
Laura, opening ac thread to discuss Concealed in Death, once it’s released is a great idea!I often want to talk about a part I just read but my 2 J.D.Robb boyfriends live in Utah and Texas (big time difference) + one has a job and the other a psrt-time job and a family. They don’t have as much time as I do, to devote to non-stop reading. My NYC friend doesn’t have email, so limited to a few calls. So looking forward to Concealed in Death!
I don’t really have any comments to make on the ‘in death’ books. I just love them and read them and then read them again and then go back and read them again. I have them all from the beginning including some of the novelettes and always seem to be drawn back to them between library books and other reads. Portrait is possibly my favourite but it is hard to be definite. I love Eves relationship with Denis Mira and Feeney and Sommerset. Peabody and her ‘squeeze’ all the characters are magic. pure magic, comfortable and contented reading, even the icky bits when the murders are gruesome. makes me chew my fingernails a it.
I agree:) Very well said.
Just finished listening to the Concealed In Death audiobook. Every book in the Death series just gets better and special in its own way. Really enjoyed the new character of the new ME. Susan Ericksen does an excellent job bringing JD Robb’s character’s to life – I know them then I hear them – don’t need a prompt to know Eve is talking or Roarke or Sommerset – its just them. Susan acts out the whole story – its like listening to a play or old time radio show. I hear something new every time I listen – most of the In Death books I’ve listen too at least 4 times – once a year I do a marathon of the downloaded audiobooks. What a gift – excellent writing and narration thanks to JD Robb – Nora and Susan for their beautiful work on this series. Hope the books continue for a very long time. Your Fan – Melissa Blanchard – from the frozen North staying at home during the snow storms & listening to audiobooks:)
Enjoyed Concealed a lot on Audible, Ms. Robb! I missed some of the inner plots concerning the characters, such as Feeney – who was scarcely mentioned – and Susan does such a marvellous job varying the voices. I appreciate the background on Mavis, however.
I so want to adopt Quilla. I felt so sorry for her and could really feel her longing for a friend when she was referring to the friendship necklace. “But even as she said it, Quilla eyed the pendant as if she wanted-one” (Concealed, pg. 382). Maybe she will get a good gig at the new center that Roarke is building.
I am not sure if Detective David Baxter will ever find a woman, but it would be funny to watch him be taken out by his own game. A Kirby Fairchild (The Art of Deception) type woman comes to my mind, but I could be entirely wrong about what type of woman, if ever, he would be pitted against.
What is Detective Baxter’s race? I could have sworn that in one of the early books, it was mentioned, but I cannot find it.
Shoot, could I please clarify what I meant by my previous statement? I just reread what I wrote and see how it could be taken the wrong way. I’m not so great at expressing myself clearly in writing hence, why I would never be a writer. What I was trying to say is that if Detective Baxter finds a woman it would be fun to see how he falls in love being that he is a huge flirt. He would be taken out of the single life by his flirtatious games.
Kirby’s thing was games and she was good at it. So, a character with some of her attributes paired with someone like Detective Baxter would create one heck of a game in seduction.
I really enjoy Detective Baxter’s character, but feel like there is little known about him. I would image that if he were to fall in love he would fall deeply. He may have some negative qualities, but he seems to have a really good heart.
