What are your favorite Nora Roberts quotes?

Are there bits of wisdom or humor (or both) that you remember from one of Nora’s books?  I thought it might be fun to collect them here.  (Please note there is a separate JD Robb/In Death thread this is NR only.)  It can be from an interview or a talk Nora has given as well as books.  If you use one from a book, please post which title so other readers can check too.

Me first!

“If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.” – Nora Roberts

  1. “Anyone who has loved has been touched by magic.”-Nora Roberts

    1. Bryna said this. In the Donovan series. Bryna is Morgana’s mother.

      1. “Magic exists. Who can doubt it, when there are rainbows and wildflowers, the music of the wind and the silence of the stars? Anyone who has loved has been touched by magic. It is such a simple and such an extraordinary part of the lives we live.” CHARMED

    2. 2 from Reunion in Death

      1. “You let a kid take you down?” (Roarke to Eve)

      2. “I know where I am and when I am. And that we’ve got an anniversary coming up in a couple days. And Carlo, I’ve never loved you more.” (EVE)
“I feel exactly the same way, Miranda.” “If you’re feeling better perhaps I can let the children come in. Carlo Jr., Robbie, and little Alice are anxious to see their Mum.” (Roarke)
“Trying to scare an invalid, you vicious bastard.” (Eve)

    3. “Love doesn’t break under the truth, even when you want it to.”

      ~ Dark Witch ~

  2. Laura I agree with you on your comments, they are my favorites also. Then there is the one when she said something about getting asses either in or out of chairs and write. I just love the way Nora/J.D. takes you places and into situations.

    1. My favorite quote is from the “In The Garden” trilogy: “He’s as dim as an underground cave on a moonless night!” I laughed myself senseless after reading that!

  3. One of my favorites is found in Chesapeake Blue….”at fifty, Cameron Quinn was still a bad-ass” 🙂

  4. “You’re going to want to have that hand X-rayed,” Tyler told him as he gave him a light shove that sent Jerry the rest of the way to the floor in a curl of agony. “I think I heard a bone snap.”-Tyler from The Villa

“I didn’t interrupt, or ask any questions. I wasn’t compelled to flex my muscles,” she continued as Tyler’s mouth twitched. “Or prove to you I could handle things. I just want to mention all that.” -Sophia from The Villa

“I heard this little sound, like when you step on a twig. Rather horrible, really. Then we just left. And I have to say…Here, Eli, your glass is empty. I have to say that it was so quietly vicious, and exciting. So exciting, I’m not ashamed to say that when we got back on the plane, I jumped him.” Sophia from The Villa

    1. Those are good. I don’t have favorite ones because I have read so many books I don’t remember any of them. I like to read others and see what they like.

      1. Omg me too I remember that I loved this quote from the Boonsboro Trilogy but I cant remember what it was and which book .. lol

  5. I have 2 favorites. First from Blood Brothers,
“That brought another smile. “Learn to laugh, otherwise, you’ll beat them to death with a hammer first chance.”

And second from Vision in White “Some things in life are out of your control. You can make it a party or a tragedy.”

  6. I’m not sure this is what you are expecting to see, however it’s a favourite of mine. “I don’t play or work well with others.”. I can relate and I respect Nora for her honesty. 🙂

  7. It’s hard to resist a bad boy who’s a good man.

    NORA ROBERTS, Happy Ever After

  8. “Ah.” Cam let out a long, wistful sigh, stared up at the sky as if into deep, dreamy memories. “The stories I could tell. The way I figure it, the more a guy gets sex, the more he thinks about it. And the less a guy gets sex, the more he thinks about it. But at least when he’s getting it, he sleeps better.”

    1. Which of those books is this from? I don’t remember.

  9. I have favorite lines out of every book Nora writes. However, my all time favorites are the following: ” All the titty bars in all the land” by Declan Midnight Bayou.
” You know your mother/ grandmother how she worries.” The MacGregor’s

  10. “He’s got that whole James Dean thing going.”
“The sausage guy?” Mac asked, frowning at Laurel.
“No, Jesus, Mackensie.” Laurel aimed her gaze at the heavens.
“That’s Jimmy Dean. James. Bad boy, all attitude.”

  11. The opening lines of Montana Sky. “Being dead didn’t make Jack Mercy less of a son of a bitch. One week of dead didn’t offset sixty-eight years of living mean.”

  12. Key of Knowledge. Her living space was a testament to her first and abiding love, with shelves jammed with books, tables crowded with them. She saw them not only as knowledge, entertainment, comfort, even sanity, but as a kind of artful decoration. I have 18 full bookcases in my 900 Sq ft house.

  13. From Jewels of the Sun, this one has stuck with me a long time:

(Aidan) “What’s wrong with running away if where you were didn’t suit you? Doesn’t it follow you’re running to something else? Something that does suit you?”….”I’ve done some running myself. To and from. In the end I landed where I needed to be. And so will you.”

  14. Based on my day thus far:

“I want a beer. I want a giant, ice-cold bottle of beer and shower sex.”

    Chasing Fire

  15. From the Circle Trilogy Cian to Moira in the Valley Of Silence .
He lifted her hand and pressed it to his heart . The hand beneath his trembled and her eyes went wide . ” Your heart beats.”
” Once I told you if it could beat , it would beat for you . It does .”…
“It’s a man who stands before you , it’s a man who loves you .”

    1. The entire trilogy is wonderful, but it’s worth reading just for that moment.

  16. The one from Chasing Fire, where Tripp compares love to fire. I think it’s beautiful!

  17. This one is easy. I have this bookmarked because it’s exactly how I feel about my favorite stories. From Captivated, Nash to Morgana,
“A good story’s like a door, and you can go through it whenever you need to. After you’ve read it or seen it or heard it, you can still go back through it. Once it’s yours, it’s always yours.”

    1. I’ve often thought that quote is sooo true! And I step into good stories, and go BACK into them, all the time.

  18. From Montana Sky, Willa to Ben,
“I don’t know how you men tolerate it. Having your ego, your personality, and your idea of romance all dangling between your legs.”

  19. I have many favorites because there are so many good quotes, funny ones & poignant but one of my all time favorites follows:
“I know you love me but I don’t know why. Every time I get my balance I lose it because it shouldn’t be me and it would kill me if you ever figured it out.”

  20. “I love who we are together. I love who I think we might be. I’ll screw up. So will you, you’re not perfect. We’ll hurt each other, and make each other laugh. We’ll make love and we’ll fight. I want us to promise to try not to let each other go. Trying’s all we can do.” – vision in white

  21. I am not sure I have this word for word, “Begin like you would like to continue” Brenna O’Toole

  22. “Motherhood’s a kind of art, don’t you think, Miss McCourt? A work in progress of the most essential, most vital kind. One that requires valor and heart.” Pitte Key of Light.
Laura was talking about how November makes her think of the Key Trilogy so I started re-reading today and as a new mom I found this quote quite perfect.

  23. “No sir, you’ll do no such thing. Tucker peeled the potatoes and that girl’s going to set out the china. Least she can do after asking that dead doctor to dinner.”

    1. That passage — and the response is my all time favorite lines from Carnal Innocence. Loved the Della character. And don’t even get me started on Cousin Lulu!!

  24. “I guess. Peabody says we need to take a gift. A teddy bear or something.”

    “That should be simple enough.”

“Good. You do that part. I don’t get the bear thing. Aren’t bears something people generally try to avoid so as not to be mauled?”

When he laughed, she glanced over. And just looking at him, seeing the laugh in his eyes when he looked at her, had everything inside her going warm.

    Innocent in Death

  25. “if my heart beats again, it would beat only for you..” Cian to Moira of Valley of Silence
    that’s my favorite line..

  26. This quote is from Heaven and Earth from the Three Sisters trilogy. I fell in love with it from the moment I read it, and I paraphrased it in my book of quotes (I have a book I write my favorite quotes and songs in.), so, I don’t have the exact wording, but this is almost exact (minus a word or two where the ‘…’ is). “Heaven and Earth… do more than just hold us between them. They expect us to deserve it.” -Nora Roberts

  27. “Life is all about risk, Alanna. There are those who take them, wholeheartedly, and move forward. And there are those who hide from them and stay in one place. Which are you?” -Serena in In From the Cold (The McGregors – Ian)-

“Stop tormenting yourself with what may be, and look at what is.” -Arianna to Liam in Enchanted-

  28. “She came because we sent Santa a letter, months and months ago, so we’d be early and he’d have time.”
    “Have time for what?”
“To pick out the mom.” On a shuddering sigh, Zack sniffed and looked up at his father. “We wanted someone nice, who smelled good and liked dogs and had yellow hair. And we asked and she came. And you were supposed to marry her and make her the mom.”
“Why didn’t you tell me you were thinking about having a mother?”
“Not a mom.” Zeke told him. “The mom.” -All I Want For Christmas

  29. “Fuck me” from Roarke after Eve punched him in the nose and after she punched a former girlfriend of his in the nose.

  30. I wish I could remember what book of Nora’s this is from but it goes something like “The way it is now doesn’t mean it’s the way it’s always going to be. “

  31. This is not a quote, but the word went directly to my heart. Because it felt the same for me when I lost my husband. I also have two boys so the similarity was astronishing. It´s from the book “Blue Dahlia.”
I have the words only in swedish but I will try to translate them back to english and ask of your forgivnes at the same time for my poor english.
    Stella is telling Logan about the tragic accident when her husband Kevin died and at one point he says;
“It felt that I was divided in two parts when he died. One who just wanted to lay down an die, and another who had to go throw the sadness and anger and daily life – to live.
Logan; It takes courage to live.
Stella; Thanks. I had to fight back. For the sake of the children and for my own.”

In those strong words I found my soulmate. Nora through Stella.
Of cours I love her stories and I fully agree with Sue Nodine of her favorite quote, but behind them there is a great woman and a great fellow creature who I´ll respect. for as long as I live.

  32. One of my favourite NR quotes is… ‘I guess I get the calling an ass**** an ass**** from Cam…’
    From Seth in Chesapeake Blue

  33. Every Nora Roberts book becomes my favorite. Even if only for the time it takes me to read it. Then I pick up the next and it becomes my favorite for a time. I love them all and each one has a story, a life of its own. Laughter and tears. Family and friends. But one series stands above the others for me and especially one book. Valley of Silence. A fight for not just one family, one home, one land. But for all humankind and the right to live and die as human. Nothing more basic than that but hardly simply. The story of Moira and Cian is one of my favorites of all of Nora’s books. I cry everytime I read the ending. ( OK the middle parts too).
“The hand beneath his trembled, and her eyes went wide. “Your heart. Your heart beats.”
“Once I told you if it could beat, it would beat for you. It does”
As far as I am concerned the most romantic line in any book. Ever.

  34. The late Thomas Montgomery’s quote is good one, as remembered by Beckett while working in the family shop: “No point in doing something if you’re going to do it half-assed.” – The Next Always

  35. “Magic exists. Who can doubt it, when there are rainbows and wildflowers, the music of the wind and the silence of the stars? Anyone who has loved has been touched by magic. It is such a simple and such an extraordinary part of the lives we live.” CHARMED

  36. From Sea Swept
“The kid’s driving me bat-shit,” Cam complained…”You can’t say boo to him withot him squaring up for a fight.” “Mm-Hmm.” (Ethan) “Argumentative, smart-mouthed, troublemaker.” (Cam) “Must be like looking in a mirror.” (Ethan) “Like hell.” (Cam) “Don’t know what I was thinking of. You’re such a peaceable soul.” (Ethan.)

Then a little later when Cam, Ethan and Phillip deciding how the work/caring for Seth situation will work, Ethan says Cam will be primary caregiver “Makes sense,” Phillip agreed and, feeling better, he grinned at Cam. “You’re Mommy.” to which Cam replies “Fuck you.” and Phil comes back with, “That’s no way for Mommy to talk.”

Laugh every time…I have read this series at least a dozen times and listened on audio probably half that. I want to marry Cam…

  37. So many. Last night I read this one:

” Life is a circle and love is what gilds it.”

    Inspiring and So True 🙂

  38. For me it is that moment in Birthright where Callie gapes at Graystone when he says they are still married. Makes me laugh everytime she says her sense of humor is as warped as his.

I also like that part where she makes him “Assume the position” and flutters her eyelashes – “”I nearly drowned. That could’ve been it,” she added, tossing his own words in his face. “And somebody’s wasting time.”

    >>

He opened his chain, took his ring off as she gaped at him.

“You didn’t sign them? We’re not divorced?”

“Nope. Here, put this back on.”

“Just one damn minute.” She curled her fingers into her palm. “What if I’d fallen for somebody else, planned to marry somebody else? What if?”

“I’d have killed him, buried him in a shallow grave. And comforted you. Come on, Cal, let me put it back on your finger. I want to go home and sleep with my wife.”

“You think this is funny, don’t you?”

“Well, yeah.” He gave her that quick, dazzling grin. “Don’t you?” She folded her arms, narrowed her gaze. Tapped her foot. He just kept grinning.

Then she stuck out her hand. “You’re so lucky my sense of humor is as warped as yours.”

I love that book !!! One of my most re-read books.

  39. “Neat trick…” “That’s right. That’s goddamn right. You wanna see another one? How about the one where I kick your balls up against the back of your teeth, then beat you into a coma while you’re on the ground writhing in pain?” “We can skip that one”

    The Search

  40. “A woman’s house reflects the woman.” Jude in Jewels of the Sun by Nora Roberts

  41. “Some things in life are out of your control. You can make it a party or a tragedy.” -Nora Roberts-
    Brilliant!!!

  42. “I learned, later than most, that challenging yourself means you’re alive, not just existing.” -Alexander (Cordina’s Royals)-

  43. “… If you don’t ask, the answer is always no…” Where is this quote from?

  44. “But you’ll come see me,” he continued as they walked. “You’ll sit and have a glass of wine in my pub so I can look at you and suffer.”

    “God, you’re Irish,” she whispered.

    “To the bone.”

  45. “You’re very kind”

“No I’m not, I’m single minded, easily irritated, selfish, driven, and very rarely kind. I just don’t think about it.” -Callie (Birthright)
