I’m preaching to the choir here on these last days of 2024, but the end of the year, the start of the new, lure me to look back, and look ahead.
I’ve been incredibly lucky—I work hard, but I don’t discount the luck—to have been able to build a long career doing something I love. A big gift, especially when I was a single parent, was being able to make a living and stay home, be there when the boys were little, be there when they came home from school.
The business of writing, away from the keyboard—signings, events, media, meetings—took me out in the world. You don’t see much other than hotels, highways and bookstore backrooms when touring, but every now and again, you get a treat. And another major gift is meeting readers, making that personal connection even if it’s only for moments.
I’d often meet three generations, or sisters, cousins, best pals, who had a special connection through the love of books. I’d meet aspiring writers who just needed a word or two of encouragement. Every once in a while—thankfully not often—I’d meet a different type entirely. Like the woman on the scooter in a Meijer’s store in, I believe, Detroit. For some reason at that moment, the media liaison, the store people, were elsewhere, so I was alone at the table with the reader line, signing, chatting. This is usually fine.
But in this case, the scooter woman was outraged. I was signing Born In Shame, the third book in my Born In trilogy, and she demanded—loudly—to know why I’d written such a filthy book. In hindsight, I think she just went by the title, but she claimed she’d read it, and it was filthy. I did the usual, placating, sorry she didn’t like the book. But she was relentless, insisting over and over that I admit I’d written a filthy book, should be ashamed, and demanding to know why I had. Sex! Filthy sex!
I believe it’s the first and last time I’ve been accused of writing filthy sex, but anyway.
Meanwhile I’ve got a line of stunned readers, and I’m running really low on placating and polite. This went on and on as I couldn’t shake her, even by asking her to move along, and stating firmly, I don’t write filthy books, sorry you found it so.
Blah blah blah.
Well, I did, it was, she insisted, filthy and disgusting, and she claimed: I BUUURRRRNED it. Loud and long on the burn with a nasty sneer to cap it off. So, upset and angry now, I called her a Nazi and told her to go the hell away. I think Security finally got there and took care of that. And the readers in line were so sweet and sorry.
I haven’t forgotten that strange experience—obviously—but am happy to say it’s the exception.
Booksellers all over the country during my touring days would make a point to tell me how nice, happy, patient my readers were, and there’s another gift.
Another is the stories readers have to tell, either in person at an event, or through a note. I hear how my books helped them get through chemo, or an illness, the illness or death of a loved one. More than one have told me they sat and read to a dying parent. What a loving kindness.
The great gift of reading came home to me at a signing years ago in Texas. Two women came up to my table, co-workers. The older one had realized her younger colleague couldn’t read. And she had the kindness and courage to offer to teach her. And the younger had the courage to say yes. During the weeks and months, they became more than co-workers, more than student and teacher. They became good friends. They brought to the table a copy of Irish Thoroughbred. It was the first book the young woman had been able to read, with her friend’s help, from start to finish.
And a reader was born. Someone who’d continued to pick up books, all different kinds of books, and read for pleasure. All because someone had reached out, taking the time to help her learn. I was so honored that my book, my first book, that little 55 thousand word Romance had helped open the door to all the worlds that live inside books.
Recently, at a Girls’ Night Out at Turn The Page, a couple came up to the table. The man told me my book had saved his life. I expected to hear he’d gone through a difficult time, and reading had helped him through it. But this was much, much more.
Richard, a vet, had a hell of a story to tell.
He told me he hadn’t been much of a reader, but as a young Marine serving in Afghanistan he saw Witness In Death, read the back cover and decided to trade with a local merchant outside Kandahar. The book for a pair of sunglasses. He liked it, and got in the habit of carrying it in a Ziploc bag in his cargo pocket. He’d take it out now and again, read a little because he could focus on the story. He related to Eve Dallas.
I could see that. She’s a woman of courage, a warrior who takes her duty and her oath seriously. And doesn’t shirk either. And Richard did the same.
His mom sent him the rest of the series up to that point, but he continued to carry that particular book with him.
And one day, he came back from a brutal firefight where he lost friends and fellow Marines. He laid his rack, took the book out of his pocket to quiet his mind. And saw the bullet sticking out of it. Obviously surprised, he held it up and told his friend: Shot my book!
The book took the bullet, and he didn’t.
His friend deemed it his lucky charm and insisted Richard continue to carry it. He did just that, all through his tour in Afghanistan, then again in 36 months in his tour in Iraq.
Eventually luck ran out, and he was seriously injured.
He suffered hearing loss, and requires a service dog. He likes to listen to the In Death books through his hearing aids, they quiet his mind. He can focus on the stories, the characters, and his ears don’t ring, he doesn’t think back to war and battles, but stays in the world of the book.
I can’t tell you what I felt when he told me his story. Shocked, grateful, horrified, fascinated, all of that and more. But when he showed me the book, and I held it, looking at those ugly little holes going through page after page? Overwhelmed isn’t a big enough word. He stood there, handsome and smiling, with his lovely wife, Christine, because he decided to trade a pair of sunglasses for a book, and he’d carried a book in his pocket because he’d found the story in it took him away for a time from the terrible demands of war.
I signed the book, an obvious and oh so worthy exception to the rules. When they left, he thanked me for writing a thick book. I remember him saying that, and I remember his story. But I honestly don’t remember what I said to him. My brain fuzzed over at the sight of those ugly holes going through words I’d written in the quiet safety of my own home.
So if I didn’t thank them, let me do that now. Thank you, Richard and Christine, for your service and your sacrifice. I know Eve Dallas would say the same.
The gift of reading, the worlds and possibilities of books. As one year ends and another begins, I wish us all many hours of pleasure and peace within the pages.

I have been reading In Death since the first day the first book hit the book stores. Also a long time reader of everything Nora Roberts. I recently invited a friend to go to our library’s used book sale with me. Elizabeth is the most well-read person I have ever met. I’ve heard or say more than once that Central Arkansas Library is her favorite place on Earth. And I have never heard her talk to someone for more than fifteen minutes without hearing her recommend a book to them. She glanced in my book bag as we were leaving the sale and noticed I had some of the In Death series. ( I reread the series so often, I’m picking up hardbacks of the ones I bought first as ebooks so I have the whole physical collection.) Turns out Elizabeth Eckford of the Little Rock Nine who desegregated Little Rock Central High School in 1957, is a huge Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb fan too. We enjoyed talking about your books all the way home. We both LOVED Inheritance and The Mirror and can’t wait for The Seven Rings.

I love your stories. I am so frightened of what 2025 holds I have book releases dates on my calendar. Falling into all of my favorite authors’ books, while quilting, has become my refuge. My ‘In Death’ books, haven’t taken a bullet but they’ve refocused my mind during depression many times. And on nights I can’t fall asleep I start naming in my head, all the characters I can remembering, Eve, Roake, Somerset, Mavis, Gala😴😴
On some restless nights, I fall asleep reciting the names of NR trilogies (in chronological order, of course!) and I never make it to the end. As an alternative, I pick one trilogy and remember the names of all of the characters and their interactions.
FYI: My favorite “trilogy” is Chesapeake Bay SAGA because we all needed to know about Seth. And— my favorite stand-alone book is NIGHTWORK💜

Thanks so much for the stories you give to us. Reading has been a huge part of my life as long as I can remember, whether it was my parents reading to me at bedtime before I could read myself, Disney books on vinyl records, or voracious reading on my own once I learned. I’m a word processor, and sometimes I watch the words appear on the monitor as I type and marvel at the miracle of the written word

I’m not going to lie, this story had me crying! 😭 The power of words is truly unmatched.
My mom got me reading Nora’s books in high school, at 14 years old. I had to read 25 minutes a day/3 days a week. I wasn’t a reader, and asked for her help. She walked into our dining room, coming back a few minutes later with Birthright, which had come out 2 years prior and told me I’d like it because it was about an archaeologist (my dream job). I fell in love with Nora’s words and reading. I haven’t missed a release, have had the honor to ARC read a few now, and have read all of her work at least twice – or in the case of the Key trilogy, which I fell madly in love with and have lost track of how much I’ve read it.
Because of Nora, I have dreamed of becoming an author myself. She’s the woman I look up to, a woman I hope to meet and say these words to someday.
I loved reading this Nora. Richard’s story was touching and I too, thank him for his service! Happy Holidays to everyone and Happy New Year as well.

When I first started reading your books I was about 25 back in the late 1980s & in the 1990s I came across the first In Death Books .
I am a reader of books , & I have been since I was 3, when my mother a school teacher in Boston MA taught me how to read . Growing up my whole family read. Fast forward to November 2021 after Thanksgiving. I went to the Newton Public Library in Newton MA to pick up the second book in , I believe the Dragon Heart Legacy series . I couldn’t wait to read it, even what I thought was a bad head cold would keep me away . I found out after that weekend as the cold brought me into the Emergency Room I was having a heart attack, & needed stents. Which I received. What kept me going I had to live long enough to finish the trilogy , & of course all the books that follow

Thank you for writing your wonderful books! While i mostly read your In Death series I have read some of your other works. Reading opens worlds that we sometimes don’t know even exist until we open a book!
Also if someone doesn’t like a particular book or books an author writes then they need to find a different book or if it’s the author then they need to stop reading that authors books! There are tons of books out there waiting to be read!

My story isn’t as impactful as this one, but you have helped me as well. My husband died unexpectedly in August of this year leaving me grieving and alone. Reading has always helped me through the bad parts of life and made the good parts shine brighter, so after he passed I found myself turning to your books again. Starting with the last book I had purchased, Mind Games, i have been systematically rereading every book of yours on my kindle, purchasing ones I didn’t have on there already (I own many of your books in print, but it is easier to read on a Kindle with my old eyes!) Rereading your books didn’t change anything, my husband is still gone, but they helped give me a soft place to land when reality was just too harsh and painful. So, thank you for your words and thank you for being there for me, even if you didn’t know that’s what you were doing!

How lucky was he to have that book! I have been reading you since your first book and have loved you for years of enjoyment. These last few years, since Covid, I have been 24/7 on oxygen and asthma medicine just to breathe which limits my mobility so I keep re-reading
Your books over and over again. I have most of them but since I retired in 2015 , same year I went to get an autographed book from you in BoonsBoro, I can only read from my library or get some used fro Thriftbooks. I was hoping my kids would get me a couple of the new ones but I got other great gifts from them. I thank God that you enjoy writing so much. 4 stories a year is a lot more than any other authors.

I was in Iraq for a year for a deployment and while your books didn’t save my life physically they definitely did mentally! Missed my family and little boy desperately but I could read your books and just shut everything out and escape for awhile! My first Nora book was Once More With Feeling and it’s as precious to me now,piles of books later as it is today,if not looking a bit worn lol. Nobody should tell anybody what to read or what genre to read. I read for pure escapism and to relax. Judgemental people are not welcome in my space and I’m so glad that Nora does not give these individuals air time. Let’s live and read in peace people.

I feel sorry for the woman who went ballistic on you. It’s obvious she had problems in life and didn’t have anyone to help her through them. But it certainly doesn’t excuse or justify how she treated you. I believe things happen for a reason, and sometimes we need the ugly to appreciate the beauty.
Oh my goodness! What a beautiful story! I cannot imagine your feelings that day. This just made my day! I have been a fan of yours since Irish Thoroughbred…I have a lot of your books, but I have every In Death book written. I have read all my life since I was 4. I am 77 now and still reading. I read Irish Thoroughbred when it was first published and have read almost all of your books since, as soon as they hit the shelves (or close). Lucky me, I worked in a book store! The In Death series got me through the dark time of my mother’s illness and subsequent death back in the spring and summer of 2009. I reread all of them from Naked on to whatever the latest was in that time. They gave me an out and saved my sanity. My very favorite series though is Chesapeake. The Quinn’s stories were absolute magic. Thank you, Nora. ~Jenny

I reread these book over and over – your descriptions puts pictures in my mind and transports me to the world in the story – what a wonderful escape from everything going on around me. You have spoiled me for other authors who do give me that lost in the book world that you do – as your blog says – I “fall into the story”

I am one of those fans that you helped get through the death of a loved one. Two actually. I have read your books since your first. I am proud to have been on this journey with you. Years ago when you still signed books that were in our private collections, I sent the entire Language of Love books to TTP for you to sign. I think your husband Bruce was supposed to take them home a few at a time. But apparently he took the whole lot home at once. 😳 And you were gracious enough to sign them anyway. ( Could have played a part in your decision to stop signing outside books . 😅) You even mentioned it to me when I came to my first signing at TTP. I am proud to say that I own every book that you have ever written ( most all are signed) in every format. I even get the reprints signed. I don’t remember learning to read, but I remember devouring books. There was a program in my grade school where we could order books (25¢, 50¢, 75¢ or $1.25 depending on the book). I also had the library at the high school, where I discovered a trove of new authors to read – I also read all the Heidi books and Mary Poppins books, which are hard to find these days. I also discovered Daphne du Maurier and read all her books ( not sure I’d have a child of that age read her books – I was 12). And now I have your books to read. I thank you for that. I thank Richard and Christine for their services and that God for Witness in Death. May your New Year bring you wonderful and joyous things.

My daughters and I have read all the In Death books. A few years ago, my son (who has read Nora Roberts’ books) got frustrated that we kept discussing Eve, Roarke, Peabody, et al, and didn’t know what we were talking about. We told him if he wanted to join the conversation he needed to read the books. So he has. Multiple times. If Peabody was able to walk off the page and into his arms, he would love it.

I have been struggling with mental health issues for 20 months now. I have read (and re-read) nothing but Nora Roberts and JD Robb – it is my comfort, my haven, my escape. This post made me cry and made me appreciate what I have. Thank you.

I too cried reading this. What a great story. Thank you for sharing. Reading truly is a treasure to be cherished. It takes you to another place and time and sets your mind at rest from the stress and troubles of everyday life or just gives you hours of pleasure to those who need a different kind of escape. I started my journey many many years ago when I picked up a Harlequin novel. I loved it so I went back and bought the other 5 books that was on the spin around book tree at Woolworths. This will tell you how long ago that was! When I saw I could subscribe and the monthly books would be delivered to my door I quickly signed up. I loved opening my mail box and there was the box with my 6 books a month. You didn’t pick what you wanted. You got what was published that month. Nora quickly became my favorite author and was thrilled whenever I got one of her books. Harlequin still has subscriptions but you get to pick now. Nora wrote for them when they added Silouette Presents books. I have read every one of her books since those early days. I didn’t read the JD Robb books for a long time. I didn’t think I would like a futuristic story which I thought it was a sci-fi series. When my mom passed away I went into a really big funk. I stopped reading. A friend gave me Naked In Death and said read this book. You will love it and be hooked and bring you back to reading. I took it and after waiting some time I finally picked up and read it. Hooked I was. I made a list of all the books that was out in the series at that time and there were many and with my friend and husbands help found a copy of everyone that was published by then and I’ve read everyone that had come out since then. So can’t wait for February and the next book to come out. Reading is a welcome escape for me. With cancer behind me and my husband now facing Parkinson’s it’s a place to go to get away for a little while. Thank you Nora …you have helped me through some tough times past and what’s present to come.
I was an only child. As a baby, my parents would read to me when I became school-age and learned to read, a whole new world opened up for me. As a senior citizen, I still read every day. This blog post touched my heart.

When she looked interested, I took the first three books to her at the start of a 3-day weekend, but told her to take her time. The following Tuesday, she stopped at my desk, muttered “B***h” and dropped off all three books with a request for the next two. Twenty-plus years later, we still enjoy spirited discussions about our latest reads, so thank you for that gift, too!

As so many others have said, this amazing story brought tears to my eyes. I stumbled onto to In Death series by accident – I was at my local Walden’s bookstore (a long time ago) and picked one up based on the “Nora Roberts writing as JD Robb” expecting to get a romance and boy was I surprised. I will be honest, it took me a while to embrace the futuristic genre, but it quickly became my favorite and I was hooked to the point that on the morning of knee replacement I sent my daughter to the store as it was the debut of a new In Death and I wanted to dive into it as soon as I woke up from surgery. And yes, I did ask for it in the recovery room. Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift with all of us !!
I’m a veteran of Desert Storm. When we were in Saudi Arabia, we were 10,000 miles away from everything. No contact with the outside world. It was terribly isolating. The chaplain put a small library of paperbacks on a table outside his tent–books sent by people from home. You took one, brought it back, took another one. They were a lifeline because they were our connection to the outside world. If you have a family member deployed overseas, send a box of paperbacks.

But you were my dad’s very favorite author. He loved Eve Dallas, and read any of your other books he found as well. When he passed away last year, I inherited his Roberts collection. I remember reading ‘considering Kate’s and thinking to myself, “I’m going to read all of Nora Roberts books.” I read them and fell in love with Ireland. Wow! I am crying and smiling. The love of reading has been the most cherished gift I received from my mom. I was touched by your story of Richard, what a blessing it was that he saw that book and was moved to trade for it. And how special for him to be able to share that story with you in person! I am also super touched by the story of the lady who learned to read with your story. I worked in a Middle School for several years with an English teacher. The children who struggled with reading often found it easier when they were able to choose something that excited them. I remember boys who stumbled over words but persevered because they wanted to know how the character learned a new soccer play or found their first true interest reading Hatchett as a class. I loved fantasy at the start of my reading journey. I was on a lunch break at work and picked up a copy of The Fellowship of the Ring that had been left in the break room. I was lost until someone came and asked if I ever planned to return to work. Needless to say, I scoured my local bookstores until I could find the rest of the Trilogy (this was in the early 70’s, and it wasn’t as easy to find as now). In my later teenage years, I found Harlequin novels and ate them up like candy. Your books had a different feel than some, there always seemed to be a little humor or more of a connection between the characters than some of the other books. I began reading your longer novels as I found them and was hooked. I still read Sci-Fi and Fantasy along with Mystery novels, but now I am addicted to the In Death books and have to slow down when I get a new one, so I don’t grieve the length of time it will be until the new one comes out. I am searching for all NR and JDR books to add to my collections. I am older now and have a progressive lung disease. It means decluttering was necessary, so I have repurchased all of your books on Kindle to have them at hand. Thank you for being so prolific a writer! While I cry that I have to wait ‘so long’ for a new book, it is amazing that you can deliver such good books so often.

I read the Born In trilogy years ago when you first wrote them, but I experienced them again as I listened to the audiobooks. You have such a wonderful way with words, and I discovered that as an author, I “heard” your descriptions and stories so differently in the audiobooks from “reading” them in print. You inspire me with my own writing.
Your story about the ignorant (only polite way I can describe her) reader was funny and irritating too. I only hope she came to her senses and realized the fool she made of herself.
But your story about Richard brought chills but warmed my heart too. To think that your writing probably saved that man’s life! What author wouldn’t want to hear that testimony.
You have always been my favorite author since the day we met many, many years ago. Your unwavering commitment to your craft and your readers is truly remarkable. I’ve never read any Nora Robert’s books, only the JD Robb ones. I started at the beginning when my library had a sale and I bought the first 10. I was able to read them then bought more. Now I belong to audible and have quite a few especially the latest ones. I read every day and have gotten my 10 year old great grandson to read by taking him to the library. He’s into a series called I survived but would rather have the physical book not audible. But what’s more important is he has gotten his 3 yr old brother into books. He does ask me when I’m getting a new book and can he get one too. You inspired me to read more and I in turn have them reading

Your ideas, determination, great love between particular characters, has shown me Yes there exists evil, but with dedication, love and kindness, it can be conquered and turned into love, friendship and helpfulness. Thank you for bringing so much love and goodness through the various themes you write. You are totally amazing.

I loved these stories about your readers so much and especially Irish Thoroughbred!! That was the first book of yours I bought and now I have almost all of them. Thanks so much for Richard’s story and Christine’s strength. It brought a clench to my heart as we lost my Marine big brother, the last of three, about a year and a half ago. Seems like last week. As for the burning “filthy sex” woman, would that be sec in a mud pit? That’s the only thing I can think of that would be filthy about it. Then you’d get to shower all that filth off. I’m sorry for her. You’re brilliant and have such a gift.
I have to forward Richard’s story to my nieces, my late brother’s daughters who aren’t blog readers like their mad aunt. I hope his story doesn’t hurt their hearts but brings good memories of their dad.

Wow, so glad I read this. What amazing stories! My Mom loved your books and had read many of them. She passed away in 2021, but I recall her saying she loved the In Death books best and they allowed her to escape into another place and time. She enjoyed Eve’s banter and trying to figure out “who done it” before it was revealed. She always thought they’d make a great TV or movie series.

Nora, that’s a very moving story. We are so grateful to our troops and their families. I was a military wife during Viet Nam. It was a hard time, with no gratitude.
But what I want you to know is that when I first discovered your books, the first one I read was Born in Shame! I didn’t know it was the third in a Trilogy. I just picked it up to read while traveling. And it was spectacular! I enjoyed it so much, I found the first two and devoured them. It’s the first Trilogy I had ever owned. And I’ve read, enjoyed, savored every book you’ve penned since then, including all of the In Death volumes. Thank you so much for your talent and persistence.
