The Obsession excerpt

Untitled-1

The Obsession — Nora’s 2016 hardcover romantic suspense — will be in stores on April 12 in the US and Canada (April 4 in the UK/AUS/IRE/NZ/SA).

The publisher blurb reads:

Naomi Bowes lost her innocence the night she followed her father into the woods. In freeing the girl trapped in the root cellar, Naomi revealed the horrible extent of her father’s crimes and made him infamous. No matter how close she gets to happiness, she can’t outrun the sins of Thomas David Bowes.

Now a successful photographer living under the name Naomi Carson, she has found a place that calls to her, a rambling old house in need of repair, thousands of miles away from everything she’s ever known. Naomi wants to embrace the solitude, but the kindly residents of Sunrise Cove keep forcing her to open up—especially the determined Xander Keaton.

Naomi can feel her defenses failing, and knows that the connection her new life offers is something she’s always secretly craved. But the sins of her father can become an obsession, and, as she’s learned time and again, her past is never more than a nightmare away.

My review?  You’re going to LOVE it.

  1. Thanks so much for the “treat.” I printed it out and will probably read it more than once — in fact, just re-read the printout of Chapter One of The Brotherhood — as it’s just a week away!!! Love these “goodies” you send our way to help during the wait from pre-order to having the books in our hands.

  2. WOW ! Just WOW. Sitting on the edge of my seat, how in the world can I be expected to wait till April after reading that… Just one more chapter , pretty please

  3. I hate reading these snippets. I really hate that I can’t not read it. Them hate that I have to wait months. MONTHS. What the heck Laura? Can’t I get an ARC? Come on?

    Lol
. So excited for this story. Seems a bit more dark, more…just more.

  4. Hook. Line. Sinker. Quite possibly one of her best opening chapters ever. I would love to know Nora Roberts’ secret for continuing to write so prolifically, and consistently improve her characters and stories in genres that cross from the romantic to the brutal, from reality to futuristic to mythical. If she takes some sort of “author vitamins” I want some. 🙂

    1. She has a gift…no other way to describe it…and she works hard at using her gift instead of ignoring it.

  5. Well dang. Heck of a way to lose one’s innocence. I am wanting to dive into the rest of the story NOW. I’ll wait, and since January has raced by in a blur, I imagine April will be here more quickly than I am able to believe right now.
Thanks for the teaser, it is much appreciated. Thanks for the stories you weave, they are always wonderful gifts.

  6. wow….this one will be amazing. How does Nora keep coming up with these incredible stories? and I think this kind of thing happens all the time, and no one knows about it….think of all the women and children who are missing…are they in some hole in the ground being tortured?

  7. I cannot wait!!! I love your trilogies but nothing beats the stand alone books. Is it April yet???

  8. I’m hoping . I am trying to get thru the collector I love nora but is just not grabbing me.

  9. Wow, what a great start. I will be on the edge of my seat until April, waiting to see what happens next. I love getting these chapters to get me excited about the new book. Thanks!

  10. My birthday is April 12th, so this is like kismet to me!! I am seriously thinking about ordering the book with the autograph as a Happy Birthday present to myself (if she is doing that with this one) instead of going to Wal-Mart to by it. I am so excited to read this book and I can’t wait!! Well, I can’t wait for the book but I can wait about the getting a year older part!! I have just about all of her books on my shelf, so I am looking forward to adding this one.

    1. It is my birthday as well! I like your idea, and will borrow it. Happy Birthday to you on April 12th!!

  11. Great start! Looking forward to reading this…can’t wait till it is available…

  12. I read the excerpt yesterday and can’t wait to get my hands on this book. I know it’s going to be a great read!

  13. Thank You so much for the preview can’t wait for the Book to come out!

  14. I don’t know if this is the proper place to express my opinion…but… I’ve read every book in the J.D. Robb Obsession series at least twice. I love them! The relationships between the characters, the drama and the action combine to make this series the best I’ve ever read. My problem is with the last couple of books. In my opinion the violence has gotten too graphic and sick; gouging each other’s eyes out and victims being forced to rape each other, just a few examples of going way too extreme. This series has always balanced the violence with the emotions so welI, never before have I wanted to re- read a book or anticipated a new release. They grabbed me. Unfortunately, the last few, especially the last one, had me questioning if I will buy the book when it comes out. Of course I will read it but I will wait until it is available from the library, as I’ve had no desire to re-read the last two books. My opinion, bring back the relationships and the emotions.

    1. Well, no it’s not the right place, per se. This thread is about the Nora Roberts title The Obsession, not the In Death series. But I’ll answer by saying that a reader’s reactions to books are individual to each person. JD is going to write the story she needs to tell so it’s far better if you go the library route. We’re huge library supporters around here.

  15. I was so into it I was devastated when it was over. I can’t wait and will preorder this for sure. I talked about it at my crafting group tonite!

  16. Thank you for the “treat” 🙂
I believe I’ll have another “Midnight Bayou book” (that’s the only book from Nora I couldn’t finish… read the first pages and felt phisically ill) in hands but I’ll give it a try and I just HAVE to have it 😉
If I don’t like or keep reading there’s always Stars of Fortune to read for comfort 😉

    1. Yes, Midnight Bayou does come to mind, and while I understand what you are saying, this is rough, I believe that Nora’s character development, and her story style of story telling teach us much. You have all of us to connect with as you read it, if you decide to. We can discuss it, and that might make it better.

  17. Can’t wait til April!! Also Laura you’re right she has a gift. She is amazing in writing her stories.

  18. I absolutely love the formats for both Liar, Liar and The Obsession. Almost done with Obsession, sadly. Plus I really appreciate that all the pages the book were the story and not a plug or intro to a new book. I hate to buy a book then have 100 pages used to introduce a new book. Both of those books were really good reads.

  19. hello 🙂 I really enjoyed this book it’s one of my favs of Nora’s but what i’d really love to know is if there will be a sequel “Mason’s book”? Because i’d adore seeing his character again with him as the hero of the story. He was such an amazing character with a fantastic back story, but I what I would imagine would be completely different perspective than his sister. And I for one would LOVE to read about it and his journey into the future and how he deals with the demons in his past. (I doubt that i’d be the only one) 🙂

    1. Hi Danielle,

There is not going to be a story for Mason (we discuss that up thread). Nora wrote him as a secondary character and has no plans to put him front and center in a different story.
