Today’s the day! Year One is finally here — in stores or on your ereader. A little over a year ago, Nora shared the new direction in which this trilogy — The Chronicles of The One — would go. Now you get to start the journey.
I simply devoured Year One when I had the chance to read the ARC in the spring. I truly believe that the direction may be different, but this is a Nora book filled with relationships, evocative imagery, great dialogue and people you will love.

Almost finished. Library released early. Honestly at the start, I had to walk away to clear the dread. The book is so visually descriptive that I was afraid it would give me nightmares. Not a complaint, that is just how well Nora writes. The bad are really bad and the good are really good. Light and dark, black and white, good and bad. A masterful mix and looking forward to the next round. I loved this book.

Purchased and have just flipped through. Is it as heavy on dialogue as it appears? Prefer a heavier weight on descriptive passages, with inner thoughts explored and settings described. Heavy dialogue just wears me out.
I am going to have to say that this is one of the best books I have ever read. It is very intense but before I even finished it I was wondering how early was to early to read it again. I was worried it would be too dark but it really is a story of hope.

I agree! I remember trying to read The Stand by Stephen King. I kept getting sick (cold and flu) every time I’d start it. Fortunately this didn’t happen to me with Year One. I loved it!! I love all of her books but this one has everything. The downside is having to wait for Dec 4th for the next one in the trilogy!

I just started Year One and do not expect to be disappointed. Having said that, my favorite novel of all time is The Stand by Stephen King, which I re-read every 5 to 10 years. I think it is the quintessential 20th century novel of man’s internal struggle between good and evil, and it is ALWAYS riveting for me, no matter which read it is. I also expect to really enjoy Year One. Since it’s possible that Nora Roberts’ and Stephen King’s readers don’t always intersect, this may be to the 21st century what The Stand was to the 20th. Even with different types of characters and though I am at the beginning, it is already shaping up to be a journey, fellow travelers collected along the way, some survivors with the light of goodness in their hearts and some with the dark of evil. If Year One was inspired by The Stand, then kudos to Nora Roberts and to Stephen King. Many unique creative works are inspired by others. I think part of the nature of creativity is that nothing exists in a vacuum and there needs to be a spark from somewhere.
Loved it too, when can we expect the next in the series?

I also have listened to Year One twice. I purchased the MP3-CD Audio Book and I seem to have a problem you might help with. The MP3-CD seems to skip parts of the book. There are chapters 1,2,3 No Chapter 4, chapter 5, No chapter 6 and progressively skips several other chapters. Of course the story line seems choppy as well. I’ve returned the CD once already but just received the same thing again. If anyone a offer insight, I would appreciate. Other getting a physical copy of the book, I can’t tell for sure. I realize you have other books to write and that waiting appears to be a marketing ploy, but truly, do you think we don’t imagine that the next two books are already written? Personally I will wait until you publish all three titles to buy the books as it appears to be very good. But you know you’re competing with other authors whose books and marketing strategies are better for people like me. Wish you the best and see you in two to three years!
The timing of this trilogy is not a marketing ploy. Nora stopped writing trilogies back to back over a dozen years ago due to scheduling the other books she writes each year. This trilogy is not finished by any means. And the fact that the books are longer than trilogies in the past means Nora needs the time to write them. In the meantime, she will meet the contractual obligation to write two In Deaths and a hardcover romantic suspense besides the books in the Chronicle of the One. One author — four long books a year? That’s productivity unlike any other author I know.

I agree. Nora’s output is phenomenal. If she was just writing the trilogy, she most likely could do all three in one year; but she’s not. I’m just happy that she manages two In Death books a year. I love her romantic suspense, too. I understand the disappointment we readers experience when authors don’t write faster, but they are only human. At least, we have the option of reading different books while waiting for the next installment from one of our favorite authors.
Tell Nora her ability to write books in the time span she does….is remarkable!!
I will wait however long it takes!!

I personally love re-reading the first book again a few weeks before the second comes out. And then re-reading the 1st and 2nd books again when the third comes out! It’s a long wait, but worth it!!
First, the next two books of this trilogy aren’t already written. Why? Because I’m not a machine. These books are longer and more complicated to write than any trilogy I’ve done before. Writing them is both satisfying and exhausting.
And in addition to writing the trilogy, I DO have other books to write. Needing a reasonable amount of time to write, to produce the best books I can, takes that time and considerable effort.
I can’t help what’s better for people like you, or readers who want this or that or something else entirely. I have to focus on what’s best for the story, while balancing the work with having an actual life.
When I do that I’m much more likely to write books that keep readers happy.
When and if you do read the trilogy, I hope you enjoy it, and at least on some level appreciate that time and effort.
You tell’em, Nora! Just finished the re-read, taking more time, and I’m still stunned, breathless, amazed. I recall when you first blogged about it filling your mind, and small wonder that it had to come out! To imagine, and then describe in such detail, such devastation and hope; such hatred and love, all of it – must have had your head in a whirl. I would think you’d need to step back – way back – and breathe after getting that all out. As a fan of both J.D. and Nora, I am always happy to see what’s come out of that awesome imagination of yours and frankly I’m glad when you ‘change it up’ and keep things fresh. This went way beyond fresh! I will read Year One again before the second book comes out, and likely both one and two when number three comes out. That’s just fine. Diving into your worlds is a privilege, and I treasure it. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and just enjoy your winter burrow time.
I would hate to see you rush any book, let alone a trilogy. I’m as anxious as everyone else for the next instalment bit it looks like it will be well worth the wait. Personally I think this was one of the best books you’ve written even without the expected HEA. Thank you for taking a chance and going in a new direction.

I agree that waiting for the next book in a series in hard but it is Always worth the wait! I would rather wait than risk Nora’s exceptional quality suffer, and burnout is real. Sometimes we forget that writers are not just writers, but also Spouses, parents, grandparents, and just people who have other interests and passions besides their craft! Year One was a risk for Nora but she pulled it off in her usual style, leaving the readers longing for more! Congratulations on your outstanding achievement and I am so excited for Dark in Death to come out next year! Every book is an adventure and keeps us going until the next!
I love nora’s work and could care less about how long between books in a series, as long as she keeps writing that’s all that matters. Creative genius just doesn’t spit out whenever you feel like it, it takes time and nurturing to craft a piece that one is happy with.
it’s ok to wish that you could read the story in its entirety, but insulting to the writer to call them out as a marking ploy because it’s inconvient to your personal preferences.
I so agree with you. It’s so annoying when the energy and the story are so fresh and I am engaged 100%. Bam, dead stop and wait. Marketing, marketing, marketing in the way of a wonderful and compelling story.

Since I absolutely loved this book, I too wish books 2 and 3 were coming out tomorrow, lol. But I do understand and realize that Ms. Roberts is only human and has a life as well as other obligations. I am appreciative and very grateful for her hard work and wonderful imagination and will wait (im)patiently for the next two!

I came to this site, because like many others, I am greedy for the next installment, or at least details of when to expect it! But to throw out aspersions about “marketing ploys” and “books already written”…seriously? Shame on you…are you one of the “Dark Uncanny”…or just a nasty human being, in general? (Sorry, couldn’t resist the parallel.) Take a note from the book, fictional though it is…enjoy what you have and look to the gifts of the future (books, food, electricity, health, safety….you understand my point.) My reaction to this post was astonishment. I have read every story Nora has written since her first published novel. Since no human batting average has ever reached 1000, not all her stories are my favorites. That being said, all her stories have been well written. I am as impatient as the next person to dive back into the Chronicles, but since my artistic talent consists solely of appreciation I am more than willing to accept the time Nora takes with her craft to create books. Oh, and I think Nora bats a solid 996.
She is writing 2 to 3 other books in addition to the 2nd Year One installment. WHO does that!!! Never heard of such a prolific writer!!
Nora Roberts please wait however long you want and need to write. Complainers Stop wasting your time telling a business woman and a wonderful creative writer how her business field works as if she has no clue. Ms Roberts takes the time to give us a really well written book and she also has and needs a life outside of her work like most people.

I really have to respond to this comment. I’ve been a Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb fan since day one and I’ve purchased at least one copy of every book, in many instances, I’ve purchased multiple copies so I think that entitles me to an opinion on your comments.
Authors tell stories. Readers buy the stories to read for entertainment. As a writer, Nora is prolific but it is NOT her job to write on YOUR schedule. She writes fast but she writes on her own schedule.
Your comments about marketing ploys are rude, your comment that the other two have already been written is insulting. And you comment about competing with other authors is unbelievably thoughtless. You are aware, I assume, that Nora also reads other authors? She’s not in competition with other authors although if you follow her blog, you’ll note she is friends with many and has extended a hand up to others.
I’ve said this before but it bears repeating. . . . . every time the first book of a trilogy comes out I say to myself “I’m not going to buy it, I’m not going to buy it, I’m going to wait” then I buy it. Then I say to myself “I’m not going to read this, I’m not going to read this,” then I read it. Then I repeat the same exact behavior when the second book comes out. And now what I do is just read book 1. Then I read book 2. Then a few weeks before book 3 comes out, I reread books 1 & 2 and then I read book 3.
Of course you are welcome to not read any of Nora’s books for the next few years. I always think cutting off one’s nose to spite their face is rather silly but have at it. On the other hand, being rude, insulting and inappropriate is not acceptable. Whenever there is a choice, choose kindness (and there is always a choice.)
Quality over quantity! I have been reading Nora since before my boobs started sagging, and I have never been disappointed! The longer it takes the better it will be! Read her others that will be out before. You won’t be disappointed.
Wow. I personally would rather give Nora Roberts the time to craft books that meet her high standards than have her pump them out like an assembly line.
Anticipation of the next installment makes me enjoy them even more.
And since I’ve read and reread every book she has written I have no desire to see her feel rushed. She gets to have a life.

If you want to wait for the entire trilogy to be published before you read it, that’s cool. Most of us don’t seem to be that patient. Do I hate waiting for the next book in a series? Absolutely! Fortunately, I’m able to juggle multiple series, so always have something to read. Sorry you seem unable to do the same. But that’s YOUR issue, not Nora’s.
Actually it’s not her call… publishing houses, editors, marketing directors etc. All have hands in deciding the fate and progress of a book after an author puts the last punctuation mark on the page… not too mention the contracts.

Nora has always had a way of blending the light and dark but just like Eve and Roarke the characters are what always draw me back and all I can say is for the first time in a long time I want to see all years of these characters in year one to be told, but I will take what i can get, perhaps keep in mind that not all your books need to be trilogies, perhaps consider making this another long running series like in Death

I like that Nora Roberts warns Max and us readers of his death. Her doing so let the loss hurt less. I like Max a lot and would have wanted him to keep living, but I also look forward to new beginnings.
Yeah…Max’s death hit me hard…I kinda saw the foreshadowing, but I guess I was hoping that I was wrong. 🙁 I already love Simon too tho and can’t even imagine where the story will go from here! 🙂

i have just finished this great book. i can never say enought in praise of ms Roberts creative skills. just bloody awesome. i have every single book you have written. i have re read series many times. just love your work.
Enjoyed the book, the personalities, the story. I’m guessing we’ll meet up with the New Hope people again and watch their society take shape, resolve issues, and, hopefully prosper and grow…. looking forward to Fallon hooking up with Duncan and maybe his sister to fight the dark forces and save the light-third book should have an epic battle with strategies leading up to it . I surely hope there isn’t a ‘purge’ to kill all the girl babies who might be The One. That’s a too much like the Ten Commandants!
My hope is also that we meet up with the New Hope folks again!! Especially Fred!! I really love her.
I don’t know how Nora will fit all this into a trilogy b/c there are just so many awesome characters I’d love to know more about! I couldn’t put the book down…and its stayed with me DAYS after I finished it. SPOILER ALERT!!! Don’t read this post if you haven’t read the book and don’t want to know some of what happens before you start reading!!!!
That said:
I, too, truly appreciated the scope of this first book. I looked forward to the release and rushed out to get a copy of the book on the day of release. . Having just finished the book, the holidays resulting in a delay in getting started with the reading process, I don’t think I can truly express HOW much the apocalyptic events affected me. (I did have a few nightmares, but that is just a sign of how well this book sparked my, admittedly, overactive imagination. )
As a clinical pharmacist working with infectious disease specialists, oncologists, hospitalists, residents, nurses, and most especially patients, in a host of different levels of acute care, the picture of “The Doom”, the link of starting with patient zero and showing just how quickly and easily pandemics can start and spread was very well done and, in my opinion, well defined for your average layperson. The book, also, showed well how dependent we have all become on technology (in every aspect of life, but most especially in healthcare [that being my field, that is where my natural focus leads]). Being a pharmacist, I am admittedly somewhat biased when in comes to holistic and natural remedies for reasons that don’t need to be listed here. However, if an event such as this book describes (God forbid) were to happen I could only hope that the good, non-prejudiced, and openly kind survivors would by far outweigh those with bad intentions, poorly informed or misinformed, &/or prejudicial survivors.
It is so easy, watching what is happening in the world today and be able to place yourself in the same scenario as the book and think, truly think, how would you react if this scenario (or similar) happened tomorrow?
Now to get off my verbose soapbox … I, too, am hoping to see a reunion with the New Hope people and Lana, Fallon, and Simon. My heart broke for Lana and Max, several times, but especially at the end. As I interpreted the story, both Max & Ross/Katie/Duncan/Antonia are all descended from Tuatha de Danann. Is that correct?
I was left at the end of this first book with so many more questions than answers:
– about the original prophecy and when in time it was first made? In the 1st section, Grandma Frazier stated most had forgotten the prophecy.
– is the Reverand who started the Purity movement human or Uncanny (or is that my suspicious nature reading into something not there) and how did he and his movement hook up with Eric and Allegra?
– will we see Max again? Will he be reborn?
– I would love to learn more about Fred (awesome she was named after Freddie Mercury, by the way) … and Flynn & Starr … and Duncan, Antonia, and Katie.
Sorry for the rambling post.
I would be okay if this series turns out to be longer than a trilogy … if needed.
Anxiously, but patiently awaiting the next installment. (Guess this means the job search is back on ?.)

I am also eager to see how the characters evolve and hope they meet up again with the New Hope group. It does my heart good in today’s world, where we also have to believe in the honesty and goodness of what can seem to be too few people and not be discouraged, to feel that humanity at its core has to be better than evil. It’s a hard story but also encouraging. Loving it!!
I’m so glad to hear you say that about the beginning of the book. I, too, read a few chapters and then had to leave it. A few days later when I felt “stronger” I started it again and couldn’t put it down. I absolutely did not want the book to end. Look forward to the 2nd one.

I agree. I also felt like I wasn’t even reading Nora Roberts, the style of writing was totally different .I really enjoyed the beginning, the set up in Scotland was great then when the magicks ,gore ,ect began I was totally turned off .Do not plan to read the second one. I have read every book Nora has written, many several times over and slogged through this one but have never gotten so little pleasure from her writing.
I thoroughly enjoyed Day One. I enjoyed reading Nora’s recent post. I am glad she is taking time for herself. She mentioned she was ready to pick up Stephen King’s Sleeping Beauty. Tell her I am half way thru and in true King style with help from his son Owen, it is a hell of a ride!!
I started this book in the middle of the night have read it for four nights now. It is, so far, disturbing but her brilliant writing style keeps me going. Now that I’ve read your post -(thanks) I will continue on only not at 2:00 am anymore!

Hi Nora and Happy New Year! Thank you for many years of engrossed reading. Right now your books are filling up bins in my basement. Each book has been read over and over and over again. Year One did not disappoint. I had to space my reading to make it last as I could have devoured it in a day of marathon reading. Your imagination and writing ability are legend. I’m sad to have to wait till November for the next installment but I like many others it will only multiply my/our joy by reading Year One again. In doing so I will pick up on nuances that I missed the first time I read it. This will make the next book even more enjoyable as I see how some act, chance person or event is the stepping stone for what happens in the new book. Again thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.

Maryann I was right there with you…I even dreaded picking the story back up in case I would continue to have the same reaction, LOL! Fortunately Nora took care of me there and the beginning just added power to the rest of the book. Loved it but am worried about the 10 month wait for the next as there are a lot of pieces to try and remember.

Hi i loved the book i hope she makes a sequel to this chronicling lana daughter life her comming into her own and how her powers save the world and her trial and success and how she fights the dark forests and over come them
I wasn’t sure I would like it after reading the excerpt and I read most of Nora’s books multiple times. I borrowed it from the library and while it is different and at times sad I will now buy it. I hope to see some of the characters left behind in the future books but that depends on where the author takes them. For anyone unsure borrow it first.

Oh my gosh, finished this within 24hrs of starting, it was so good! I really like the new turn Nora has taken! But my heart aches for some of the characters and I cringe at the meanness of some and the unfortunate parallel to our current US situations. Thanks for a great read, Nora!!

I too read in 24 hours; meant to read a little before bed, ended up staying up all night, can’t stop thinking about it. Waiting a year for the next book will be hard. Love the characters and just got so into their struggles.
My fix for the long wait will be re-read it – read it twice so far- and to watch A Discovery of Witches, Mute, Shape of Water on DVD…this is new for me, I never read Harry Potter, I now get why people camp out for books. I love the characters, if you guys release a special edition with extra book one stuff I will be first in line.

I was one of the fortunate ones to receive my ARC on Nora’s birthday. Might I say, WOW. I dived right in and have already reread it. I love everything about this book. It has been so hard to keep my fingers quiet about this fabulous book. It soared to the top of my NR favorites. Thank you for the hundreds of hours of enjoyment your books have given.

I enjoyed YEAR ONE also and I am looking forward to the second year. Surely the people of New Hope will return as we , the readers invested a lot of love and feelings for all of them. We want their story to turn out well as we do Lana’s and Simon’s and of course, THE ONE. Thank you Nora for many hours of reading entertainment. I am one of those who wish the writers could write faster but I understand good books take time to write. For myself a good book unfolds just like a movie in my mind and it is really frustrating to reach a point where the movie just shuts off. LOL. I suppose I could wait for all books in the Story to come out but that is no fun so I’ll read and enjoy YEAR ONE and wait for two and three. Merry Christmas Nora and your family.

Just finished! Speechless! How long do we have to wait for book 2? Now I have to reread. I wasn’t sure I would like this new path of Nora’s, but loved the story. Overwhelming!
I really enjoyed the book. Was only going to read a few chapters but ended up reading until 3am finishing it. But I am now so curious for the second. Are we going to see Fallon grow and what about Katie’s babies. Can we get some hints??

Loved this new book. I am presuming it is the first of a trilogy. The format was different. Not so obvious 6 characters that become three couples. The storyline was compelling with a few twists and not so obvious future relationships. Her storytelling itself was outstanding. She hooked me in with the first two chapters and never let go. I thought Obsession was the best I had read of hers until this story. A great read!

So were Max & Katie’s family related? I thought Max & Katie’s babies were both called (that long Irish name I can’t pronounce lol)…so is it a type of power or family connection?
I don’t think Max and Katie’s babies are related…..I think Duncan and Fallon will fall in love and fight the big fight in book 3-good against evil (Eric and Allegra)…..I think they are both of tuatha de danann-tribe of Irish gods. They are chieftains.

I absolutely loved Year One! I purchased the eBook yesterday morning and struggled to put it down, so I gave in and read until I finished it. I then had to read it a second time last night.
I loved the story and the way magick weaved through it, the development of the characters and the vivid imagery that sparked both wonder and fear as I read.
My only upset – and it was a little one – was that I would have liked to have seen more of New Hope after the events there, given I’d grown so attached to the characters. Maybe in the next book?

Just finished the book. Its almost 4am in the morning. when I started it earlier this evening I promised myself that I wouldn’t read it in one sitting, well here I am hours later finished. I couldn’t stop reading. It was that good. Definitely different from other Roberts books, but character development just as good. I can’t wait to read book two and find out what happens to all the characters we met in book one.
In one of the review someone mentioned that it reminded them of Stephen King’s The Stand, I disagree. The premise of a super cold wiping out the world and good versus evil may be the same but the arrival is different. The darkness is different and the light as well. The writing in King’s novel was very much based on religion and I think in Roberts book it’s based on magic with religious undertones. That’s just my opinion. Both books are very well written and The Stand is one of my favorites.

I read The Stand many, many years ago. It was honestly one of the scariest books I’ve read in my life ~ because it felt like it could happen. Nora’s has a different perspective, but is not less frightening. In the strange world we now live in with travel to everywhere, there are endless possibilities for contagious, infectious problems. Mixed in with the gov’t desire to control the narrative, it opens up all kinds of possibilities. I love the possibilities. I enjoyed the read and look forward to saving it to re-read as Book II comes out.
I don’t read Stephen King, so cannot have an opinion on how it relates to The Stand. However, I did feel some similarity to The Passage Justin Cronin. I guess it’s the apocalypse comparison. I did have a moment of wanting to throw my Kindle at the wall (Max)…just as I did when I finished reading The Passage first time and didn’t know it was a trilogy LOL. I’m with everyone else on wanting some follow up on all the babies and people we’ve come to love in this one. I can’t imagine Nora would leave us hanging!
The book YEAR ONE reminded me of was Robert McCammon’s SWAN SONG. One of the best books I’ve ever read and this new book by Nora’s is a match for that one.
Swan’s Song has never received the accolades it deserves and I believe it was one of the best books ever written. It does belong in the company of “The Stand,” and now, “Year One.” The fact that Nora’s is part of a series makes it an incredible feat of storytelling and craft that few writers could accomplish. She is truly amazing!

I too loved this book. I read it fast, so now I can go and re-read it slowly and savor it. It didn’t remind me so much of the The Stand as it did that TV show Revolution, which I also liked.
No one writes like Nora Roberts. That is just the plain truth. She is fantastic. I love this new direction this trilogy is taking.

It was great! Going to start the re-read today. I’m hoping for New Hope stories in book 2. I kept waiting for an update on Katie and the babies, Rachel and Jonah, Fred, Arlys and all the rest.
This book has all the elements I look for in a post-apocalyptic tale. It has the initial die-off (sorry but I can’t think of a better term), survivors trying to adjust to a dystopian world and survivors forming new societies and re-establishing a new life. Throw in a sprinkling of the paranormal and you have a ripping good story.
I have often thought about what I would do if I awoke one day to find that the apocalypse had occurred. I know, my thoughts are not those of a normal human. A lot of the things I think about are very close to what happens in Year One. This book is very well written and very well thought out.

Ordered it yesterday morning and it was all I could do not to read it at work. Got home from work at 5pm started reading and finished it at 10pm. It was SOOO good!!! I read through it so fast I’m going to have to go back and read it again, much slower this time to catch nuances I might have missed. I cannot wait for the next one!

Another fabulous read from Nora Roberts. As always with Ms. Robert’s books, I felt I knew the people (not just as characters in a book) and rejoiced with their triumphs and felt sorrow with their pain.
Will Katie’s twins study with Mallick when Fallon does? Will Fred and Starr end up together? President MacBride (Scottish background–maybe an Uncanny?) was mentioned a few times, so what role will she play with our groups?
Do I really have to wait until November to find out??
I read my first Nora when I was 17 I’m now nearly 48. I’ve got every book both Nora and JD Robb and have enjoyed them all.
When I read that Year One was going to be a little different I’ll admit I was worried. Worried that it wouldn’t be the Nora I love and enjoy so much .
I should have known after all these years that I not only wouldn’t be let down by Nora but completely blown away and left speechless. Loved it! Definitely in my top ten.
What about everybody in New Hope that lived? Are we going to see them again? I felt more emotionally invested in them than I did Max. For example- Fred, Jonah, Eddie, Katie the babies. Will the next book be 13 years ahead or we will go back to New Hope?
I agree, losing Max made me cry for Lana but I’m more emotionally invested in Rachel, Jonah, Katie, Arlys, Fred, Eddie, Kim and Poe, the babies. Lol it was hinted that there was an importance that Jonah, Rachel and the babies are connected, full circle, I need to see/read more.
I just finished this in one sitting. I was first on my libraries hold list! It was a miracle. I did a little dance. Started it as soon as I got home. It was amazing. First part had my anxious. Made me feel sick to my stomach. I kept looking out my windows. Felt like there really was an epidemic going on. I enjoyed all the characters. Laughed and cried. I hate that we have to wait almost a year for the next installment. I have read every single story that N R has written. I believe this one is in my top 5 so far. I knew it was going to be a change but I was as excited about this one as I would have been any other. Keep up the great work and please give us something to get us through till the next installment. Going out tomorrow to add this to my collection.
Anyone else having a problem reading this in their Nook or computer? I preordered, downloaded and the screen turns black every time i try to read the book. The only thing I can see, barely, are the page numbers at the bottom of the screen. I can read any other book or magazine except Year One. Mabe ot has been stricken with The Doom?!?
Seems there has been a few problems with this book launch, between failed downloads and bad audiobooks. I couldnt read the book ob my e-readers or my laptop, but could see it on my cell phone. I took my Nook into the local Barnes and Noble yesterday and they couldn’t figure out the problem. When they tried to open the book on 3 of their own Nook devices, the book wouldn’t open. It wasnt until tech support deleted the book altogether and reinstalled it that it began to work on all devices/platforms.
Just finished it and loved it. Is out November yet? So long to wait for the next one.
I have to say that I started reading I was a little apprehensive but also drawn from the start. Although it may be a slight departure from usual, it’s the rhythm and they way she tells a story that is pure Nora Roberts. It is visually descriptive, with characters that you become emotionally wrapped up in. It is a believable tale of black and white, good vs evil, life changing decisions. i did put it down at the end of the 2nd chapter because…just wow but the magic drew me back in. Great Read! As with any series I’m wishing the next book was already in my hands
This was a good story but not epic like I expected it to be. And I really missed Nora Roberts’ rich flow of words, which made her books so special. One of the things I love best about her books is the beauty of the words crafted in such a way, they are a pleasure to read, like the Circle trilogy which was epic. I’m sorry to say that was missing in this book.
I’m still going to wait for the next book in this trilogy.

I don’t think read is the word to use; I inhaled it! Very, Very good! During the New York part, I kept thinking of that Will Smith movie where he’s trying to solve the disease & dealing with the horrors of what’s happening in NYC. Great film, but doubt I’ll ever watch it again. I cried too many times! I didn’t cry while reading this; but was shocked about Max!
Honestly, didn’t feel it was all that different from her other paranormals. Maybe if the Uncanny’s hadn’t been in the book, it wouldn’t have felt so similar, but they were, and it did! The main difference for me; we don’t have a strong sense of 3 couples, 3 books, 3 stories, all combining into one main story. I hate that I have to wait a year for part 2; I’ll have to reread this one then, but shoot, I reread all the time, esp. NR’s, plus there’s always a JDRobb open at my place!

Read it in 2 days even with having to work! WOW! What a ride. So sad about Max, though. Nora just keeps getting better. Couldn’t believe I got it from my elibrary on 1st day available.
Awesome book!! Was truly shocked about Max; I figured he was going to be the main hero throughout the series. Can not wait until the second book comes out.

And I only began Year One yesterday but I’m well into it now. That scene in the tunnels of the PATH! Wow. Nora has such a talent for turning words into worlds.
Here’s my only problem… Usually I read (listen) to all three trilogies at once. Now, I actually have to practice patience while we wait for book two!! ?

I visited Ireland this past summer and roamed around Ashford Castle, hoping to spot a dark witch (lol). I’m glad I won’t be visiting the scary afterlife that exists in a Year One anytime soon! I’ll just enjoy this journey from the comfort of my home.

Okay I saw the post on here about missing chapters on the audio is that only on the CD or also on the download from Audible? I know there some gaps in story line but thought it was just me (ie, Rachel, Katie & babies get on boat and then next thing you know they are running into Fred, can’t remember other names in their Hummer). I can’t afford both kindle & audio. So when I know new releas e is coming out I save a credit for that release. LOL, my gift to myself is 2 credits from Audible per month.
Loved it. I got it on release day and finished it that much at 1230pm. I will probably wait a few days and re-read slower. It was excellent and would make a great movie. The characters are so intriguing and some very good surprises. Never would have suspected Mac’s brother to be the bad guy.
I just finished it and have to say WOW, JUST WOW!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! I’ve been a huge fan of Nora’s for years. I’ve read all her books at least twice and especially love the trilogies (and the bride quartet). They are like visiting old friends.

Laura, I bought the MP3 CD from Amazon, which is the norm for me. I like to have the actual “book” on my shelf. Chapter 23 is also missing. Once I realized what was happening, then I noticed it went from Chapter 11 straight to 13, and so on, but I’m usually so wrapped up in the story I don’t register the chapter number. Very strange. Good luck! BTW – the story is absolutely awesome! Looking forward to the second book!

Received Year One as a Birthday Gift the day it was released! Snuggled down with it for the night! What a fabulous journey Nora is taking all if us on! Looking so forward to the second book.
Finished it last night. Awesome read. Really liked the character development. When I finished I decided I can’t wait for the second book, but, I had some unpleasant dreams overnight and now I not sure I will read the second one. My reading pattern with Nora’s series books are I read #1 when it comes out and when #2 is almost out I reread #1. I will keep to the pattern before #2 is out and decide then if I will get it.
I listened to the Audible version and have to say she did such an amazing job that I felt like I was right there going through everything along with the characters. To me it was a marriage of J.D & Nora styles and I loved it. I will thank Nora for the warning ahead of time that it is not her “Usual” so that when Max died, although I felt the grief, I didn’t get angry at the Author. But then giving us Simon to make up for it… Love him as much as I loved Max. One of the things I love about Nora’s writing is her ability to write ensemble casts that we fall in love with. Each and every one. Was I the only one who felt the on air reporter could be Nadine’s Mama? LOL. I’m a sap so I would like to see more of Simon & Lana. I also wonder if Duncan will end up being Fallon’s destiny. He is from the beginning. I also hope Katie found love again.
Do you think book 2 will start 13 years later? Hope not.
It kind of looks that way. I hope though that we see some of the other characters and there children. The twins had some powers of their own.
I’m wondering if the second book goes back to New Hope, for the rebuilding after the attack. Lana was promised 13 years of peace for Fallon, so we might get a look or two at Fallon growing up, but New Hope got no promise and, like everyone else, I’m anxious to see how everyone’s doing.

I have yet to read anything I dislike from NR. This of course is a bit different from her usual. Reminded me of The Stand by S. King. Certainly wish she would/could write faster, or I read slower. Brilliant, disturbing, grief-inducing; an EXCEPTIONAL book!! Only problem I have is waiting almost a year for Book 2 – groan – moan – whine – pout :). My FAVORITE author for more than 30 years. Thank You, Ms. Roberts for these many years of enjoyment.

This book was phenomenal. I think Nora just gets better and better. It was very different to her other works but I loved it nonetheless. Obviously there was a little unexpected heartbreak which really did shock me. I did not see that coming for even a second. I think I can see where the storyline is going by the last couple of pages and I’m excited.
When Nora announced last year she was going down a new path with this trilogy, I didn’t think I would want to read it but then she posted the first chapter and I read it. I was hooked and couldn’t wait for the book to be released. I downloaded it Tuesday and finished it last night. I despaired, I laughed, I cried and I ended on HOPE. I should have known after reading so many Nora books that I wouldn’t be disappointed. With this book, I am introducing friends to Nora.

Absolutely wonderful. Dark and dystopian but unfortunately that is the world we live in. As with all of Nora’s books I read it in a day. It’s harder on my eyes in my 60’s but worth it. I can’t wait for the next one. I have read everything she has written and this is one of the best.
I wish I had the fortitude to wait until all three were out to start to read but darn it I love her books and just can’t wait! So now I mumble and grumble until the next one is released! Book One is one of her best! I envy her command of the English language and her imagination is out of this world!
I love 80% of the story but I can’t take it when Max died. Swift would have been a great character if Max was not introduced as our first hero.
I don’t know if I’ll follow this trilogy. How I wished we also knew what happened to the rest of the characters introduced. I think that is why I am not happy when I finished the story.

Loved it. I don’t agree with the dystopian label, but then again, I don’t see any of Nora’s work fitting completely into any box so that’s just me. I loved the characters and the world building. I see this book as a book that could stand alone, but since I know it won’t, it makes me that much more interested in how this foundation develops. Someone asked if the next book would be set close in time or years later. I hope for years later.

*****The 5 stars is because Nora made me cry, and that hasn’t happened in a long time. I’d become so comfortable with her common formula of writing, become comfortable and maybe a little bored by the predictable plot lines. I remained faithful to this author who I think just gets me, gets what I need as a woman, a fan and someone who needs an escape now and then. This book is an abandonment of the comfortable, the predictable and the formula. She’s taken her magical world in a direction not on any map, and made it new. I loved this book and say so succinctly as a faithful fan of Nora, but also as what I like to think of a friend and fellow writer. She’s returned to the amazing, the bright, to a perfect fictional world that wrenches the soul and stirs the heart. For all the naysayers who were impatient with her last couple of books, they were but cobblestones leading to this one, and I’m so very glad I hung On!

Devoured this book over one day and loved the new direction Nora has taken. I purposely did not read anything about it before I got the book and was immediately sucked in to the story. It’s scary parallels with where we are on Earth just now made it unputdownable (my new word!). Did not see Max’s demise coming and loved the depth of the characters as usual. So looking forward to the next book and hope we get to meet the New Hope residents again.
Haven’t made up my mind about it yet. Read it but unfortunately sat there thinking “huh?” . It kind of got me like Morgana’s Cross did, Didn’t hate it but wasn’t sure if I liked it or not. I am reserving judgement as I ended up loving the other series.

I had the same reaction Nancy when I read the book for the first time. Both in the “I’m not sure” and it reminding me about the ambivilence I had of Morrigan’s Cross and the Circle Trilogy.
Second read I felt a lot better about the book.
I have always enjoyed Nor’a character depth in her writing and her ability to create and develop believable characters in whatever setting she puts them in and I was not disapointed this time. The story is a combination of the paranormal she has done for many years and the fantasy aspects that go with it as well as the post apocalyptic setting and atmosphere. The combination sits well with Nora’s skill.

I got so much of a sense of Stephen Kings The Stand in it I was in love (makes sense he loved Nora’s books lol) I got an itch to watch the fill version. This is not what I expected from NR. A big cardinal rule was broken at the end of Y1. After slipping through such horrid darkness in the first half of Y1, I had hoped to at least remain holding hands with the main characters at the end. What I had counted on was not there. I’m not saying the writing wasn’t brilliant but, to me, the sacrifice wasn’t worth it. I could have found this from other writers. I just didn’t want it from Nora.
I think that is why they went to so much trouble to let us know this was a new direction. All the old rules are off. That made it a fun read for me.
There aren’t cardinal rules writers must adhere to other than staying true to the story. But there are, absolutely, reader expectations. And that’s why I wrote an explanation early on that this would be a different direction.
I’ve been avidly reading all of your books for over 20 years. I love them all, even when some were difficult to read, like Honest Illusions (just ripped my heart right out! Balled like a baby) As a devoted fan and human being I truly appreciate the new direction, challenging yourself, and pushing your boundaries. I noticed a change when reading The Obsession and it is now my favourite stand alone. I have a feeling this new trilogy will be my new favourite as well.
I wish you didn’t have to put up with all the impatient people and those who criticize for not following your “traditional” lighter style. You’re a creative genius and as such need to grow and change. I applaud you and look forward to all your future books.

I agree Lindsay! I love the depth to this book, and the characters in it. And while I love all of her books, this one just grabbed my by the heart far more than any of her recent books, except for The Obsession. I found that book amazing!!!

I’m not going to lie, I was divided between being skeptical with the change in pace and refreshed . I don’t normally post in these forums but after this book I feel I have to. It was amazing. I’m not quite sure how I’m going to muddle through waiting for the next one. ? It’s dark, it’s dread and it’s light and it’s hope. I finished it in two days because I just couldn’t put it down. I have always been a huge fan of your romance and always will but this? This is something you should continue without a doubt. I see major motion pictures or TV series in your future.
With the connection to Remember When and the store Bygones, when is Year One set? I had thought fairly present time but now with the reference to Remember When (set in the future), I’m not sure.
It wasn’t a reference, just the name of a store. It simply suited the story.

I wasn’t sure when I started this book that I was going to love it. About Chapter 5 I was hooked. There was enough light to overshadow the dark and now I’m counting the days down until Year Two. Nora never disappoints. Her books, unlike other top authors, are always a new story, without just changing the names. I’m so excited about this trilogy and I’m sure between now and the second book, I’ll re-read Year One at least twice. I do read the previous book over about one week before the next is released and the same applies to the third book in the series as with that I read the first two. Thank you Nora and I’ll do my best to be patient!
I am listening to Year One for the second time. Thoroughly enjoying it. Has anyone else noticed that Lana’s baby is referred to as a savior and will be raised by a step father? Also, many are upset by how fast she falls for another man but considering the horrible times, I think it makes sense.
LOVED IT ? my goodness that was amazing! pulled an all nighter, it was impossible to put down, cried, laughed, talked out loud at the scary parts.. “don’t go through the subway tunnel! “? thoroughly enjoyed every moment, excited to read the next, thank you Nora!!!
Absolutely loved this book! We had no way of knowing (and still don’t) which direction the characters were going to take. In her usual trilogies, we see the heroes stop the evil BEFORE it takes over, not coming after. I finished it within two days, filled with hope and a lot of questions. What about New Hope? How are the babies? Will Fallon and Duncan meet and are they destined for each other? 🙂 When will the next book take place? In my mind, that is exactly how the first book of a series should leave you feeling. Thank you for another fantastic read!

I devoured this audio book. Loved the narration. Finished the book yesterday and sitting here still thinking about it, so I think that speaks volumes for the storytelling as well.
While I was disappointed that we didn’t get back to New Hope after the dreadful events, I get this story is about the chronicles of The One. Just really wished we had been able to clear up why Jonah didn’t see the deaths coming. That’s the nagging plot issue I keep revolving around in my head.
Maybe because it was not disease that killed them? I never thought about it but you bring up a good question. I read the book but now I might have to buy the audio and listen to the book also.
I enjoy this genre of book so when Nora said she was going to write one I was excited. The woman has a way with a story but my fear was that it would get too corny with the usual love story thrown in if that was what she might write. This isn’t ANYTHING like her usual and that isn’t bad. It just proves, as with her In Death series, that she can do more! It drew me in right from the start. It has the feeling of Stephen King’s book The Stand. I just wish it was one long book like that because I am selfish and don’t want to wait two more years to finish the trilogy! The only thing that I would criticize is that we don’t see any prospective from the dark side. I think it might make it a more well rounded story to explain WHY they’re hunting the baby. There are hints as to the fact that this baby is special and potentially a savior but no explaination. I was hoping by the end of book one Nora would have explained the prophecy that is alluded to. It makes me fear for the human race though because, magical or not, there is truth in this book. All in all I really enjoyed the book and will definitely read the rest. Nora, I loved the book. I would like to know how do you decide to kill one of your main characters. I imagine you had the idea before writing the book. Did you debate with yourself about the idea of killing him. I really, really loved your book (still in shock, but loved it). Waiting for the next.
It’s not really a matter of deciding, but of doing what the story needs. I didn’t debate–it was sad for me, too, but no debate. Max’s death, the time, the place, the method, stands as a turning point in the story, for Lana, and for New Hope. And yeah, it was meant to shock because we all cared about Max.
I know another reader posted I’d broken a cardinal rule. No, I didn’t. If Year One had been conceived, written and marketed as Romance, yes. But it wasn’t. I did my best to let readers know this book was a new direction.

I was truly sad when Max died and I admit I felt betrayed but after a lot of pondering I arrived to the conclusion that that’s how life works. Life isn’t fair sometimes and Max died a hero protecting his family (I’m trying not to cry writing this post). Thank you again for your wonderful books.

I am a devoted Nora fan–have read every book (most more than once). I love all the different directions that her books take…this new book–which I finished last night–was amazing. Nora has such an tremendous ability to write so that we can “see” the characters, the locations, etc. I am in awe of her abilities and can’t wait to see where the Chronicles go in the next book and beyond
Nora – I once heard a writer comment that sometimes the characters in the book dictate what is to be said or done – that the characters became so real to him that he felt he almost didn’t have control – the characters controlled the story. Do you ever feel that way? I’m just curious. And also, this new venture is amazing. I’m afraid for them. I’m cheering for their strength and imagination. I’m crying for their pain. What a beautiful masterpiece! I thoroughly enjoyed Year One, all of the twists and turns, the connections between the characters, the foreshadowing of what’s come, and I’m looking forward to book 2 in the series.
For those that are upset about having to wait for the next book I encourage you to embrace and enjoy the anticipation of continuing the story. While I know everyone enjoys reading books differently, for me the wait and countdown for a new book or movie or season of a much loved series can be a huge part of the enjoyment. This week in my house is all about the countdown for the new Star Wars movie (anyone else??) My kids and I are approaching frenzy status (2 more days!!!) Just like I enjoy re-reading the first books in a trilogy when the new one comes out, we have re-watched The Force Awakens to get ready. It’s fun to pick up details I missed the first time or remember things I forgot and speculate how the story will develop in the next installment.
Embrace and enjoy the anticipation of something. And meanwhile there are other books to be read and life to be lived.
I think this was one of the best I have read from Nora EVER. I love the idea that no character was safe. I felt the writing here was also so immersive. More so than any recent novel I read. The scene with Arliss and Fred in the tunnel was just incredible.

I just finished listening to the audiobook. (I listen while I drive to prevent anxiety attacks driving on highways) All I can say is WOW. The amount of research it took to figure out how many people could die of the “doom” in the small amount of time, well it just boggles my brain. The story was/is amazing! Now I’ll have to find something else (many something else’s) to occupy me until the next one. Sigh… hmmm there’s a new In Death book out soon……lol

Dear Nora – I am sick of readers putting you or your In Death series into their own frame of reference. I have read your books for 2 decades now and can say that you are consistently the one of only a few authors whom I always buy the next book. I reread your books all the time. They are exciting, suspenseful, fun, romantic, magical, and filled with great insight.
Year One is a wonderful book. It has a bit of Stephen King’s The Stand feel but at the same time is so different and so much more as we get to know these groups of characters. I cried, I laughed, I was charmed.
Please keep writing just as you do. I think the new avenue you took with Year One is wonderful and you are one of the very few authors who can expand her world.

Hear hear! I promised myself I’d shut up and move on but I have to agree with you, both on the In Death comments and the Year One. I have read a little of a lot and a lot of a little and I believe Nora Roberts would be among the great no matter what genre she chose.
I was not sure I would like this book, but I wound up absolutely LOVING IT! This book is, if not my favorite, very close to it. The heartbreak (Max), then the last several pages, writing at its finest. Cannot wait for book 2!
I was consumed in the book from the moment I started it. Couldn’t put it down. It had so many twists that I was not expecting. When I got to page 368, I had to put it down for awhile. Such a shock. Wasn’t expecting that. Couldn’t finish reading until later in the day. Ms. Roberts is an amazing writer. Thank you for the thrills. I will be patient and wait for the 2nd book, because a new In Death is coming soon.
Well year one certainly didn’t disappoint! I will admit I was apprehensive as I have loved all Nora’s books and the romance genre in general but this took my reading in a new direction too which I loved. The dark and light and the truly brilliant writing of describing the characters made me read it in a day and couldn’t put it down!! Can’t wait for the next ones, I personally love re reading just before the next one comes out so I remember what happens. As an aspiring author who has been writing their first novel for nearly three years I’m in awe of how quickly the books are released, looking forward to the next one. I found the direction of the book different but fundamentally still a Nora book that drags you on and leaves you wanting more! X
Wow, I absolutely LOVE this departure from what I’m used to reading with Nora. I mean to say, I am a huge fan of previous trilogies as well as In Death, but the scope of this new story is just phenomenal. I’m a person that adores a big thick book that takes a while to read (classic King is also my jam). I thought about waiting a couple of years until all the books are out for this series, but I couldn’t help myself. Next fall I will re-read Book 1 right before Book 2, and the next year I will re-read both 1 and 2 right before 3. I can’t wait!

Year One. WOW!! Just WOW!! I know the second chapter is going to be WOW too. It comes out in the Fall, the beginning of my favorite time of year. Loved it!
Like others, I found my reaction to “Year One” to be perplexing. The novel wasn’t formulaic, wasn’t a romance at its heart, wasn’t normal Nora. Which is probably a good thing for Ms. Roberts. Writers grow and develop, just as normal thinking humans. Writing or thinking the same way, over decades, can be boring.
Reading most Nora books is mostly wonderfully escapist time. Some are the best in the genre and stay with me (Blood Brothers and MacGregors). Others have interesting characters that make me want to believe they exist somewhere (Mitch Dempsey, Aiden Gallagher, Park Jones). This novel was entirely different with very little froth or escapism but lots of dread. This is simply, a mainstream dystopian fiction.
As such, this trilogy will stand or fall depending on non-Nora readers. Did it fill me with as much horror and dread as a King novel? No, disturbing but not horrific ~ excepting the terrific subway scene. Were the characters memorable and electrifying? No, they were ordinary people in extraordinary times reacting either with honor or cruelty. Their ordinariness might be deliberate by Ms. Roberts, a way for the reader to imagine themself in the situation. Did the novel have prose passages of surpassing beauty that burned into my soul? Alas, no. The writing was purposeful but not particularly memorable. Perhaps this is a direct result of Ms. Robert’s killer writing obligations. Must mean very little time for reflection and rewriting ~ just write as well in the moment as she can. Which is in all fairness, pretty well.
Her magical touches are welcome and provide both the bits of froth and the dread. They also provide a helpful deus ex machina boost — let magic explain it rather than get bogged down in science.
I hold out hope that as Ms. Roberts immerses herself into this new writing approach, the subsequent novels will have more depth, more nuances, more memorable segments. She’s a hell of a writer. Looking forward to see where she takes us on this journey. Next up, 13 year old Fallon?
Wow I thought this book had a lot of depth and while it may be different from her other books it was fascinating and scary because the way ordinary people react is so real I felt she must have put a lot of time and research into this book. I cried when Max died because normally hero’s dont, however, I loved how the story progressed to the next hero, Swift I look forward to book two and Nora I love your trilogies
I agree with you. I thought the characters had great depth and I was shocked that Max was killed. Not usually her style. I found the differences from her normal writing style fascinating, much like her J.D Robb series. I can’t wait to read the next one.
As always, Bravo!, Ms. Roberts. I just finished Year One and know the story and these new characters will stay with me for a long time to come. I am looking forward to where the story takes us in the next installment.
I have had a recurring nightmare about ‘the end of days’ since I was in the fifth grade and a well-meaning nun at my grade school tried to prepare us for what a nuclear war could bring. Stories like this always reignite that spark of fear in me about what it would be like to rebuild a life from scratch after the unspeakable loss of all I know and hold dear.
Every time I read one of your book series, I feel like I am visiting friends again and rooting them on to victory. Your writing inspires me in every book. Take your time letting the story emerge. I’ll be here, pre-ordering, when it does.

all of the reasons i read nora roberts books religiously are again shown in Year One. a great story, wonderful characters that you cheer on or instantly despise, a “got you by the throat” ability to keep me up at night until i know what happens. she creates normal people put in crisis and then leads us on a breathtaking ride. there have been books i have liked better than others, but they all have characters that i would love to meet. that is my bottom line – do i want to meet these people. and nora does it with such style.
I think i discovered nora roberts books 5 may be 6 years ago and I never stopped waiting for them since then, i’m from Egypt so it is not always easy to get them but i probably read more than 90% of her books.
That said, Year one was every thing you could hope for in fiction at least for me, it makes you think, it makes you feel, it makes you hope, triumph and weep. And for me it shows one of the sad realities of life, that even whenthe world is going to hell when we probably need to band together and help each other, some people will never see beyond hate and prejudice, that they hate someone because they are different even when they are willing to give them a helping hand.
I find myself thinking about Year one at random moments and I can still feel every emotion i felt when i was reading it, so thank you Ms. Roberts for such an amazing work and can’t wait to read your upcoming books

Just finished year one and absolutely loved it! My heart soared when Lana named the baby Fallon. My oldest daughter is Fallon. She is an avid reader like myself and I can’t wait to introduce her to your books when she’s older!!
I’m in love! Absolutely enjoyed the entire book. I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next two books. I am so grateful that Nora decided to write this wonderful trilogy. The characters are intriguing and relatable. The magick of the book is so engrossing. I didn’t want to put it down. I didn’t want it to end. It took me a week to read since I had to stop multiple times to take care of my family. I plan to read it again. When Max died I was heartbroken but I am happy that Lana found Swift. I hate that people are so rude to Nora about her wanting to have a life.

When Max died I knew, well, no words…I thought ‘Well they said it wasn’t a romance but…Wow, he died? The witches don’t die!” So now I’m looking forward to the second book☺

I won’t lie, Year One totally gave me bad dreams, which means it was AWESOME. I read it in a day and honestly had some pretty crazy dreams that night. It’s definitely a different direction that her normal trilogy’s (or any of the books written under Nora Roberts as opposed to J.D. Robb) but I was totally absorbed and enjoyed every minute. I look forward to the next one!

Nora has written one of her best novels. I was blown away – read it in a day!!! It is hard to wait for the next installment, but welll worth the wait. I imagine these novels take a great deal of energy to write. All I can say is ” God Bless Nora with the strength to continue”. I love all her books- J.D. Robb too. What sets books like Year One, The Stand and Swan Song apart is simple – excellent storytelling. I would rank these three as among the best in the post-apocalyptic genre. You may not like some of the events in the books (i.e., Max’s death), but you keep reading because the story pulls you in.
Had to slow myself down from devouring this book too fast. And alas, I finally did come to the end. I want MORE!!!! I read a lot of end of world books – mostly YA – and this was better than the best of any others I’ve read. Painful, scary, thoughtful and amazing, it’s everything I could have hoped for, and more. Can’t wait for the next! I’ll reread it at least once before the second comes out. WELL DONE!

I hope we learn more about the characters in New Hope and what is happening to them after the attack. I really got attached to Jonas, Fred, Arlys, Rachel, Eddie, and Flynn. I hope they all meet up with Lana and Fallon again soon. Thank you for being a part of my life all these years with your stories. You have been a welcome break from reality, and a necessary stress reliever. Your stories really come to life for me and transport the reader into another world, even if it is just for a short while. Hello. I am a big fan and have read many of your books. Love romance and mystery fiction. However, my other great love is post-apocalyptic fiction and I’ve also read many of this genre, my favorite novel of all being “The Stand” by Stephen King. No other PA novel has ever stood up (no pun intended) to “The Stand” IMHO. Until now. I’m less than halfway through “Year One” and I am enthralled. “Year One” mirrors “The Stand” on several levels but I don’t mind one bit. LOVE IT! I’m wishing I didn’t have to work so I could take an entire afternoon and finish it. Then read it again.
I just finished Year One, it was..everything. There was so much emotion, that at times I cried, and continued thru the tears, hoping for the best. I could not put it down, and when I did , I woke at 4am with the need to read on. I cannot wait to see how things go from here. Until then, I will spend some time with Roarke and Eve in January!

But with Year One you have completely out-done yourself! I loved it! I am so glad that it is to be a series! Nora, Thank you for uncountable hours of enjoyment and escape, and the emotional ride that your excellent writing has given me (and my husband) over the years. Characters in your books have always come alive in my mind’s eye and many are like real friends, especially Dee and Dallas. I trust that Lana, Fallon and their cohorts will be just as treasured and alive in their continuing stories. One other post suggested this series showed potential for more than a trilogy which just goes to show that the challenges and dreams of their stories touches us deeply and we want them to continue to be part of our story too. That is, of course, up to you and your creative process, but it would certainly be winning and welcome.

Totally loved Year One. Very refreshing that it doesn’t follow any of the formulae that I have come to expect. I’m ok waiting however long it takes for the next book. I see the potential for this to be more than a trilogy. Hopefully Amazon will have the next one up for pre-order soon.
I love anything Nora Roberts. Year One is absolutely fantastic and I could not hardly put it down just to go to sleep. I did not get anything done for almost 24 hours until it was finished. What will be the name of the next in the trilogy? I get so disappointed when I go to the library or store and there is anything new from Ms Roberts yet. I have read everything. I just love her ability to bring you right into the story and you become that individual. I must say the mythical series are always my favorites and I love the romances set in Ireland and Scotland.

Best Christmas present I received this year! Year one was amazing, I’m going to go crazy waiting for the next one but its so worth it. The pictures your words paint keep me enthralled. Just finished it. Loved all the babies! Do we think that New Hope is still standing? And are we meeting up with our friends there again? I feel like normally, we get three main couples with each book feauturing one. I liked that this book jumped around and gave us some insights into many characters. Also, will the new book start in 13 years or will we go and spend year two with the New Hope gang? So many questions! I can’t wait for book 2!
I think we’re going to wait a while before answering those questions. Book 2 will be out December 2018, so look for an excerpt around mid-year.

Got my copy of “Year One” for Christmas. I new it was going to be different from Nora’s usual, and I love everything written by Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb. Even though the storyline was different. It was fabulous, and completely drew me in. I started it Christmas night, ( I tend to stay up half the night when I get a new, good book) and finished it up the day after Christmas. I no I have about 11 months for book 2, and im Super excited to see what that one will bring. I really hope that I haven’t read the last of the residents of New Hope. Even though I like we’re Lana is, and seeing what will happen with Fallon. I’m glad Lana will find love again, I was shocked when Max died, because I like happily ever after stories. Thank you again for sharing your wonderful gift with us.
I have been a fan of Ms. Roberts since I was a teenager, and she has never disappointed me!!! I received YEAR ONE the day it was released but don’t have time to read it. I was determined to finish it over th Christmas break and I did and I LOVED EVERY MINUTE!!! Great story, wonderful characters and just the right amount of anticipation for the rest of the trilogy!!! After reading the book, I’m going back to read every other Nora Roberts book I own!!
Just finished Year One. Thank you for another excellent read, and I look forward to the sequel in November 2018. I really enjoyed each of the characters and the amazing ability of people to go on after all the death, destruction, and mayhem that abounds in the novel. The balance of good and bad is heartbreaking at times, and I can hardly wait to see what happens next – you have an amazingly creative gift! Have a good winter – my next trip to the bookstore will be for your new JD Robb on Jan 31st.
Got Year One for Christmas. Read it in 24 hours. Could not put it down!
I love it. Definitely different than her other works yet still so amazing. Loved the characters and the story……. BUT I wish I had never seen any episodes of The Walking Dead because I kept thinking about the similarities. I do not like TWD (my husband watched the first few seasons so I would catch parts of it) I get that this falls I to that apocalyptic genra and that is why it reminds me of TWD. And I think why I predicted some of the twists in the book early on. So not a criticism of Nora because obviously the stories are not at all the same. And I like her apocalyptic story WAY more than I could ever like TWD. But this gives me more reason to not like TWD 😉 because Nora was able to portay the evil of people and the darkness in such a way that you understand that it’s there and terrifying but the hope and determination we’re still strong even in the dispare. I don’t know if I’m saying it right, but yeah loved the book and the characters (damn it Max why did you have to go… I knew it was coming but still why???) I am kinda mad at myself because I almost just waited till fall to read it so I wouldn’t have to wait as long for book 2. But I couldn’t resist 🙂

I really enjoyed this book and I don’t appreciate all of her work. Read in one sitting. I too thought the themes were very similar to the Walking Dead. Pandemic of infection killing most of population, individuals and groups both good and evil coalescing. Wandering until find a community where two good bands unite. All the same routine of establishing new way of living. Rules. Timid woman becomes strong,fierce leader, her husband is killed and likely their baby will be the savior. Even the evil one under the guise of religion had his flock doing all the work to survive while his evil group was out killing and stealing. Not quite the same but sure similar. You may not have watched the hopeful parts but there were some. Also lots of evil. I do like all the good magicks awakening which is something different. However, excellent read.
Really enjoyed Year One, read it as an e-book in one day. My husband was grumbling about me reading in bed but just had to finish it. 😉
Love this new direction, been reading Ms. Roberts books for over 17 years now, loved the connections between all the people. Described as only Ms. Roberts can.
The only let down was the end, like some before me have said, I would have liked to know what happened to all the other people we got to know while reading.
That said, I also understand that a writer makes a choice and can only hope, we’ll get to see some come back in the next book.

Wow, I was blown away. It is a fantastic read. I bought the CD & had a hard time turning it off to go into work. I struggled with the plight of each character thrilled in their joys & pained in their pains and loss. I can’t wait for book 2. I, too, am a fan of the Death series & have listened to them many times. I love the characters & feel they are my family too. Great job, Nora!

Year One was by far one of my favorite Nora Roberts books ever. It was different, it was original. I can’t wait until the next one!
I have read Year One! I read it a couple weeks ago and I am speechless. I will read it again more slowly and see if I can come up with a statement of some kind. I enjoyed it very much. It was fast paced, attention grabbing. and I have to stop now because I still feel a sharp piercing that is still fresh. I will await the next book! Thank you!
In book 2 will Starr and Flynn get together, join lives, join forces? Will they start a ‘movement’ to overcome Eric and his kind? Will we see Fallon and Duncan get together in book 3 to purge the world of Eric, Allegra and their kind. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings to have Fallon cut off Eric’s head and stuff it down his neck….what about Antonia, Duncan’s twin, and Hannah, his other sibling? I’d hate to see Antonia go the way of bad Eric. That would hurt my feelings?

Well, I’m glad I skimmed through these comments. I really enjoy all of Nora/JD books. When I started devouring the new book, I really felt guilty for stopping after a few chapters. Made me feel down and depressed. I read two Nora romances and started rereading the last two In Death books to prepare for new one. It began to bother me since I knew even though a new direction it was still the same awesome author. Started it again and finished it. Glad I did. Really good story with awesome characters. Will definitely read all in trilogy as they are released . Keep up the great work and thanks for such consistently amazing stories.
Like MANY others, i was at first skeptical….SOOOOO glad i purchased the audible book. HATE that i have to wait until Sept for the next installment, but will be anxiously awaiting. I understand great talent takes great time. I wouldn’t want you to rush the book for us impatient readers. Perfection is worth the wait!. Good grief. This was such an amazing book and I applaud Nora for venturing into a new genre of romance and for doing it so well. This book had me until the end. It was one of those books where I was so sad I reached the last chapter because I didn’t want it to end. Like other readers on here I will be re-reading this several times, it was that good, and can’t wait for the next book in the trilogy. I feel that Nora outdid herself with this one and I can honestly say this is one of my all time favorite books.
Side note.. until finding and reading several of the threads on this blog I did not realize that authors get so much frustration and anger from impatient readers. I’m so grateful that authors share their creativity with us and am so glad they take the time to dedicate themselves to giving their readers the best they can all while living their own lives. The wait for the next book, in a series or standalone, is all part of the experience and for me builds up the anticipation and excitement. I enjoy the book more. The wait for a new Nora book has never been disappointing.
Nora Roberts, if you are reading this, there is something very seductive about this story. I love all of your books and enjoy many other authors as well and read incessantly. But this is the first time I have ever felt compelled to go searching for ‘something’ – anything to keep the connection to the story alive after I finished it. I have never been on your or any other authors website or blog before – always content to just start the next story. But this particular book has it’s hooks in me and won’t let go. I can’t stop thinking about it and I finished it two weeks ago. When you weigh what it cost you in time and energy to get this book in readers hands vs. what you gained, I hope it adds to the plus side to hear how absolutely spellbinding this particular story was to me and to many others as well, I’m sure. Your book is now on that very short – burned in my mind forever – list of books.

I have been working on a book off and for about a year. ( When I can) and I would love to be able to craft my characters the way you do. To be able to bring them to life and get my readers invested in them like you do. I’ve begun to think of reading your books as studying to write my own. Lol. I’ve got no idea how to write or get a book published, but for now I’m just enjoying figuring out my process. The rest will come later. Love love love it!!! Very fresh, great new characters and so much depth. This book pleased me like no other. I bought the audible version and have listened to it 4 times already, and with almost a year to wait I’m sure I’ll listen to it at least that many times more!!! Thank you Nora!!! And thank you audible for a great narrator!!! Some have been absolutely horrible but not on this one!!! Julia Whelan is one of my favorites!!! And I seriously hope she narrates the rest of the trilogy.
Just finished reading it. It was different to say the least but I enjoyed it. At first I was on the fence abt continuing it because it was rather dark & I don’t normally do dark ( I won’t even watch a dark commercial) but I figured I’d give it a little more time & really started enjoying it. A riveting book & I liked the ending giving way for more to come.
Since this is the place to discuss the book, can someone please explain how Joshua did not foresee death when Eric and Allegra swooped down New Hope? Also, did the dark uncannies turn the animals (ie some dogs). I thought the virus didn’t touch animals?

I think the simplest answer is Jonah can’t see what will happen to everyone. Max may have had good shielding, they may not have been in enough contact, Jonah’s attention was on building New Hope — he just didn’t know.
I don’t think the animals were infected but they were manipulated by the dark uncannies.

I was so afraid I wouldn’t like this; its so much different than any other of her books. But from the first page I was hooked and actually read it all in one day. The intricates of the story, the characters, how the book moves are nothing short of awesome! Looking forward to the next installment.
I was absorbed from page one. (Haha)I have always thought the end /decimation of the human race would be a virus/plague and not a bomb. Your book was so believable, sad to think how fear brings out the worst and the best in us. I cried at the thought of pets trapped in houses / apartments and went of to hug my dogs. The anticipation for the next in the series is already delicious. Till the end of 2018. Happy writing.
I loved this book! Absolutely devoured it. One of the first thoughts I had as I started the book and got into the main event was that it was similar in nature to The Stand by Stephen King – which was another great book. Can’t wait for the second in the series.

Each year in June for my birthday and December for Christmas, I request a new Nora Robert’s book if she’s released one. Obviously “Year One” was this years Christmas book. As others have mentioned, I rationed my reading of it. I will read it again.
With all that is happening in the world right now, this book could be the future. I was drawn into the strength of the survivors, both those who were uncanny and those that were pure. Unfortunately there is always the dark side of people. That’s life. We make a choice to walk in the light or dwell in the darkness. The book shows both.
As much as I’ve loved each and every “Nora Roberts” books; I simply can not get into her J.D. Robb ones. Odd isn’t it?

This was/is one of my favorite NR books!!! I couldn’t put it down – and while I’m a HUGE fan of the traditional NR “romance” and definitely NOT a fan of traditional “fantasy,” I was hooked from page 1!
I went to the Facebook page immediately upon finishing – I was planning to beg for book #2 – and was thrilled to find out that I only have to wait until Dec. 4, 2018! Of course, that seems SO far away right now…

OMG!!! Woman you have got to tone it down lol I have loved almost every book you have ever written. This one had me worried since you had already stated it was going to be different, I even put off reading it for a while because of that. But I have to say I started this one this morning and just now finished it. Couldn’t put it down! I fell for every single character and hated the way it started to end. When the end came I did what any overly emotional person does and weeped my heart out!! I think I will go a little crazy waiting for December to get here for the next book. You my friend are a superb writer and I love to get lost in your stories. Keep it up! I cannot wait to get another story from you to read!
I love to read but find that I always feel as thought I don’t have ‘enough’ time to read. I found that I could not put this book down! I will admit, I struggled with parts because it felt like it encroached on the Biblical realm. However, I still couldn’t put it down and cannot wait for the next one. However, I understand that books – like bread- take time.

I devoured Year One (like I do all of your books, Nora), and I must say, I highlighted a number of passages that I intend to quote in my diversity class this semester. There were so many themes in this book that translate well into the classroom but the overarching theme of tolerance and acceptance was too huge for me to ignore. So, into my diversity class it will go as required reading. (Yes, Romance novels ARE literature and deserve to be studied. Pride and Prejudice anyone?). I especially liked the diverse mixture of characters in this book, though I must admit, I really wanted to punch Rove in the throat the second he stood up and spoke. That’s what I love about these books. Nora writes so well that I feel like I’m in each scene, sometimes as a participant, sometimes as a voyeur (in a good way. . . *cough* The Collector *cough*) but always as someone included in the world of whatever book of hers I’m reading. I can not wait for my students to get ahold of this. Okay, enough platitudes. Did it escape anyone’s attention the number of analogies we can draw between this book and various events that are happening today? Yes, it’s a fictitious apocalyptic world, but in the sense that art imitates life, I can see parallels. Anyone else get that?
I loved the strength and beauty of this story, even while it scared me to death, because it so clearly could happen. There is a lot going on in today’s world that could be interpreted as an accident looking for a place to happen. The diverse characters of this book, and why they’re emerging, made perfect sense in the story, and I loved seeing them, and how their existence enriched lives. The dark side characters – canny and uncanny – make believability that much more possible, since of course not everyone will wake up to the fact that the only way the remaining lives will survive is by cooperation. There will always be those who only consider their own selves, not the good of the whole. I read “Alas Babylon” when I was younger, and also “Earth Abides” and was made aware of what an apocalypse – whether nuclear or pandemic – could mean. I remember being struck at how devastating breaking a sewing needle could be, when you can’t easily replace manufactured items. Simple things that we take for granted. Fiction can ‘go there’ in a way that non-fiction can’t. Yes, I saw the parallels.
I know, right? Everyone has mentioned Alas Babylon! Now I have to find it and read it. Not usually a fan of apocalyptic themes but it seems relevant right now. (As scary as that is to think about!)
Nora’s theme of the prevalence of good over evil is prevalent is so many of her books, but in this particular story, it feels even more important. Granted, the trilogy isn’t finished yet (and what was THAT about in earlier posts. Crazy)but the fact that Mallick appears as Fallon’s guardian at the end and actually delivers a promise of hope through great sacrifice is huge. Just what that sacrifice is going to be, I don’t know nor would I speculate to guess, but it parallels so many events in reality now. For example, we must endure three more years of this current administration. Though its not apocalyptic per se, there are things happening that surround this current Washington climate that could be seen as such. (Health care crisis being one, North Korea being another!)
More importantly, I think the importance of acceptance that the characters discuss and try to live in New Hope is a theme that most definitely translates to communities across the country today! I found myself wishing I lived in New Hope just so I had a chance to live amongst such interesting and diverse folks. (Yeah, I’m stopping now. I tend to get long winded!). What did you think of the Purity Warriors?
Like any fanatical group, the Purity Warriors appeal to the type of person who allows, no, embraces someone else doing their thinking for them. If it follows their own predilections, it just makes it that much easier for them. People with no moral compass are frightening. I think we’re all reminded of Alas Babylon because that story involves a small community, like New Hope. The inhabitants are very much aware of the devastation outside their borders, but are much more engrossed with their own survival. At the time it was written, in the 1950s, it was a powerful novel. I think there’s still a lot to learn from it, as well as other novels, like Year One, because the imaginations of the authors allow us to also wonder what we would do in the face of such catastrophe.

What I love even more about this book is how when most people in a time of crisis, abandon any former prejudices they may have had prior and band together. For me, that’s what I gleaned from the town council meeting scene. Granted, we can only speculate on the attitudes of the current residents of New Hope (with the exception of Rove, The Mercers, and the others who stand with them), but the camaraderie and need to build community is huge. Essentially, I think Nora hits it on the head with respect to the idea that as human beings we all need a sense of community. I saw it with Luna as she bonded with Simon, even after all she went through. (The line ” Now don’t shoot them unless you have too, Honey….We just painted the damn porch last Spring” made me laugh out loud!!!!). When most people would retreat into their grief over the loss of a spouse, Luna taps an inner well of strength and starts over. I know how that is from personal experience. I suppose that is why this book resonates with me.
Agreed on all counts. I’ve often heard that desperate times make for desperate measures and I think that it was also heartening that Simon was in communication with yet another community who had come together and started a co-op. The human will is to survive and gather.
Thank you Nora for a story that kept me awake during a journey. I have read almost every book you’ve published, most of them translated into swedish, but this one I read in english only and it was one of the best!

Outstanding book! I had to wait an extra long time to read it as there were problems downloading for Nook. However, this was a great read. Totally outside Nora’s usual books,which I buy the day they come out.
As a child,I read Alas,Babylon by Pat Frank. It scared me to death, as it was published (and read) during the height of the cold war. This has become one of my favorite sub-genres. (I love The Stand.) I read these at least once a year. Now,I have a new series to add to this list. Thank you,Nora, for taking a big chance and trying your own wings in a new way!

Well first of all I have to say that I was very skeptical about reading this book. I am a huge fan of Nora and her books. I’m pretty sure I have read every single one. There was so much talk about this book being different than anything Nora has written, so I had major reservations about reading it in fear of being disappointed. Well, I have to say I LOVED every single little thing about this book. Once again Nora never dissapoints. I particularly love her books involving Magick! So this one was absolutely fantastic. I do admit to having a few eerie dreams while reading. I do have an overactive imagination. This book for me was probably right up there on my favorites list. I was worried there would be no romance/love story, so I am glad that wasn’t the case. Lol. I am so excited to read the rest of the books in this series when they come out. and the long wait just gives me a chance to reread the previous one before release date of the new ones to get it refreshed in my mind. Thanks Nora, I really don’t know what I’d do without you in my life!! Xo
I am a huge fan of Dallas/Roarke so i am extremely glad Nora Roberts is not neglecting my favourite series for her new trilogy! While, in an ideal world, i wish she had multiple versions of herself so i could read more of her work (i have read most, if not all right back to her M & B days!) i have the intelligence to understand she does not and almost have the patience to wait – i’ll probably start getting antsy middle of next year as the time grows nearer lol. Year One is not exactly a book i would normally read, although due to Nora’s unique and wonderful writing it was a lot more palatable than i thought it might be and i am on tenterhooks awaiting the fates of those characters i have come to know! Bravo once again for a fascinating read, drawing the reader in to care about the story/characters and wanting to know what is next for them.
Now i have wittered on i will finally get to the point…………Thank you Nora for the many, many hours of enjoyment you have given me reading and re-reading your books. Last year was a sad one for me in a literary sense as i started a brand new series which i really enjoyed and then found the author was sadly no longer with us and another of my preferred authors died too. It brings home that though we often put our favourite authors up on a pedestal (for good reason) they are, in fact, human. In conclusion i hope you have a happy, healthy and productive 2018. That you continue to have the support of not only those around you but also your many fans who love the time and care you take to give us such wonderful escapes from our own realities and that you may do so for years and years to come xxx

I too can’t get enough of Eve and Roarke. I started the series over again while waiting for Echoes in Death and am now behind. . . which is AWESOME!!! It’s like finding Christmas presents I forgot to open. It’s also going to keep me happy until Book 2 of the Chronicles of The One come out.
I wasn’t totally sure about Year One either; however, I dove into it because it’s Nora. . . and then devoured every single word. It’s sort of like Disney. . . I may not want to see something but do so because it’s Disney or put out by Disney and I’m never ever disappointed.
This triology might be taking longer to write, but it (at least the first book) is far, far better than any other NR book I’ve ever read. It’s really great- and different!
Get back to me when you’ve been waiting 9 years on the next Game of Thrones installment. ?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for NOT turning Eve and Roarke into parents!!!!! Not everyone wants to have children and their reaction to Belle is absolutely hysterical. I love the scenes when the Billionaire Badass Roarke is completely freaked out by her and Eve is equally so. I appreciate how much Eve loves Belle but is still clueless what to do with her in person. So awesome!!!
Now if only there was a reader somewhere who could draw the characters from your descriptions so we would have a visual frame of reference. (Visuals help me with my learning disability.)
I had not read Nora Roberts new direction blog before reading, “Year One”. With that being said, I enjoyed this book so much. Just finished it last night.
I took my time. Wanted to savor it. It was unexpected. I was worried it would be too dark. But with the dark, there was light and hope. And it took an unexpected turn. There is so much more to tell with this story. I look forward to what is next.
I have read Nora Roberts books for so many years. There are still many I haven’t read. But, I have enjoyed the change over the years. I anxiously await the novels, each year.
So…. I applaud the new direction of this book. I embrace what I have always known, an excellent story and writing.
I tried to starting reading Year One but came down with the horrid flu. NOT the best read when you’re sick!! Now on the road to recovery, I picked it up and delved in. I am intrigued to say the least. For some reason, I seem to make a connection to our current political scene, but it’s just the way my mind works, thinking of other possibilities. It’s frightening!
I read it this past weekend. What a great story no so want to read what comes next. Nora has done it again. This is a great piece of science fiction meets magic. I have enjoyed all of Nora’s genre pieces this is no exception. I don’t think there is anything I wouldn’t enjoy reading by Nora. I have been a fan since the 1970’s when I began reading romance. My ultimate favorite is the In Death series.
Question for Laura – so when the weekly ‘game night’ was mentioned – did you dropped the book and run away? That was my first thought when I read that scene. “Oh poor Laura, she so would not like this part!” Then the snickering commenced as the next thought was “stupid scoreboard,”

I just got to read this and I have to say it is by far one of my most favorite books that you have written so far! It captivated me from the start and I literally could not put it down until I finished it! It’s going to be a long wait for book two!
Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors. I’ve read all her books. With being said, I have to say I was disappointed with this book. I felt like I was reading The Stand all over again. I am going to reread it after a while and hopefully I will love it.
I loved “Year One” and cannot wait for the next installment. I love almost all of Nora (JD)’s books. How she keeps them all straight is amazing. I put all the release dates in my calendar with reminders so I never miss one. Terrible to say but I hope she never retires from writing! 🙂
I listened to this on audio books and I loved it. It is not unusual for me to love your books but I must say this is fantastic. I do enjoy this type and you more than lived up to my expectations cant wait until the story continues. I read this book in 3 days! I couldnt put it down! So good. I am really excited to read what comes next!
I have always loved reading, but in recent years, my life had been too hectic so I switched to audiobooks. However, I missed just curling up in a big chair with my coffee or a glass of wine and getting lost in the pages. Making time to read again was my new year’s resolution.
This was my First N.R. book and I absolutely could not put it down. I finished in 3 days and immediately went searching for the next release date. I love the vivid descriptions that let me picture every scene in my mind as clearly as a memory.
She has definitely gained a fan!
Any suggestions for what to read until the next one is released in November – hopefully in time to read over Thanksgiving.
Try – The Witness, The Obsession , well damn read them all!!!!

I loved this book as I love most of Nora Roberts books. I just wondered if we will revisit the people of New Hope to see if they survive Eric and the the purity warriors. I am now looking forward to December 4th.
My absolute favorite author ever!! This has to be THE BEST book of hers I’ve read so far!! Counting down the days until the next book in this series comes out. December can’t come soon enough. Very riveting and phenomenal job!!!

So to say my students DEVOURED Year One is an understatement. I thought it would take them longer to read, after all they are 18 year olds, but they had it finished before our next class meeting. The discussion was unbelievable. They drew analogies between the holocaust and the Rwandan genocide with the purity warriors as well as had rousing discussions of the apocalypse, it’s portrayal in the Bible and how different passages from the book could mimic it.
They talked extensively about the apocalypse and survival and all agreed that the New Hopeians should have run Rove and his band of folks out of town on a rail. (Ive discovered that this age group, at least those in my classroom, have very little tolerance for bullying or discrimination).
The conversations were spirited, and my young men even put themselves in the places of Max and Simon and the debate between them and my young women over protector vs. partner was really insightful!
Nora, you’re entrance into my University classroom was amazing and the lessons my students took from it were nothing short of miraculous. Many of them said this was the only book they willingly read cover to cover. It was by far the most fun I’ve had in a long time. Thanks! You made me their favorite professor!
Wow, Tracy, I bet it took you a while to settle after that class! What happens after this? Are there more like-minded books they’re reading, or are you still working through parts of Year One? Lord knows there’s enough going on in that book to last an entire semester. I was reminded of other books I’d read, mostly after a nuclear holocaust, and Year One gave me so many other avenues to think about and still think about. Thanks so much for sharing.

Character analysis in Year One as well as theme analysis with respect to magic, apocalypse, and discrimination. Letting my students lead the conversation. We’ve only touched on the book so I’m pretty sure it’s going to take me until mid semester. Beyond that, I’m not sure. I’m so excited that they have taken to Year One.
I imagine sooner or later I’m going to have to return to their textbook. Luckily it’s short. But I’m sure they are going to be disappointed.
That’s good, that you’ll be able to let them delve into the particulars more. Should make for some fun debates.
What an amazing book!! I have been a fan since her first book so I knew even taking a different direction Nora Roberts would not disappoint me and I was right. Have to say even with the hints about Max’s fate I still cried. Loved him. Already love Simon. Looking forward to the second book. I am half way through the book on audio and I can’t stop listening to it. I may listen to it again before returning it to the local library. I’m sure I’ll catch things I missed the first time. I can’t wait for the 2nd book to come out.
I’m tell my sister to get it, she is a great Nora Roberts fan. She reads all Nora’s books so she may already have it. I know she will love Year One as much as I do.

So as a single parent I generally wait until the paperback comes in to buy the book or ask for it on special occasions. Having said that, I didn’t want to wait so I borrowed my friend’s copy. What an amazing book. From the first chapter to the last it held me and took me less than 12 hours to complete. I can’t wait to purchase so I can read it again. I will for sure be in line for the next and luckily it comes out right before Christmas. Yeah!

I didn’t think I would like this book wasn’t gonna read it. I should have known that Nora Roberts would not disappoint and she hasn’t. Thank god I did. I love anything Nora Roberts writes, always look forward to the Death on demand. Its a great book and will do as others suggest and reread just before book 2 comes out to refresh and read the first 2 just before book 3 comes out.
wow, I have just read the comments on this blog and all i can say is that I don’t see how some people can perceive this as a marketing ploy, in my opinion Norah does not and never would need a marketing ploy. I have been so busy lately that I haven’t had time to read this book and the last 2 In Death books but having a holiday shortly so will catch up on all my reading then. Keep up the fantastic work Norah and know that 99.9% of us really appreciate your great talent
I started this book today a little after 2 pm and at first wasn’t sure I would like it (found myself going back to page one and reading the first paragraph out loud to my hairdresser!) and just finished it at 11:30. Best book I have read in a long time, will be trying to wait patiently for the next book. Thank you Nora Roberts!
Finally broke down and bought a copy..you never disappoint. Boy ohh boy, the segment was vivid that I had dreams and I kept replaying the scenes in my head at work..made it super hard to concentrate during the day. Can’t wait to see where these group of passionate people will lead them with their quest for survival.
My mom mentioned this new trilogy to me (sorry to say, Nora, that she won’t be reading this one). I read and love the In Death series, but I am not a romance fan (totally over those when I was 14), so haven’t read anything written under Nora’s real name.
I’m a fantasy and science fiction reader, but also enjoy a good thriller/suspense novel. This was a good doomsday/post-apocalypse book and I am definitely looking forward to the second book! And thanks for keeping the romance level low!
And no offense, but the comments about having nightmares have been making me giggle. But since this is the type of reading I normally enjoy, I don’t think twice about the types of events that occurred. For someone not used to this genre, it could be disconcerting. I guess that’s a good sign of great writing!
I have been reading comment and can’t believe half of what i am reading. Ms. Roberts just take your time in writing your books. I love them all. Lord I would love to be able to be as talented as you are. I just love Year one bought the book in hardcover, for my tablet and have it in audio. I have listened to it three times already and read it once. I already told my husband I want the second book for Christmas. I read several different authors and I can say I have four that are my favorites and two are you. While reading your books I can tell you enjoy the work you do and just look forward to anything you write. I do have one question. Are some of the others going to be in the second book also. The ones left in new hope will we find out what happened to them also.
Loved the book. Couldn’t put it down and at the same time I didn’t want it to end. If I understood, book 2 will only come in the end of 2018? Long wait for next one.

Your ability to write the way you do is a gift that always amazes me. I have been a huge fan since ’81 with Irish Thoroughbred, which I still have and reread. You have the ability to draw a person into your story so that we feel like we are there ..that we have met these characters personally (Roarke & Eve have been part of my family for years now) …that’s your gift of description ..you know just what to write in order to make a scene come alive ..it’s all in the details and the emotion. How does it feel to have your book be part of the college curriculum for Tracy?? Fantastic idea, I think ..wish I’d had a professor like that :). Your style has indeed changed ..for the better. There is so much to think about in this book ..so many characters. I can’t help but imagine what the future will bring for all the characters ..so many to keep track of ..I love it!
I broke my trilogy rule ..i.e. buy all three books before getting started( because I’m just too impatient to wait for the next one)..I started reading this one as soon as I got it due to an insatiable curiosity I obtained after reading the teaser you always give on your website before the release of the book ..the first chapter! This series is a bigger than your usual trilogies ..and as mentioned quite a few times in previous comments, it touches on reality a little too closely for comfort, I guess. You make it all seem so real and possible (I for one would love to see a being with fairy wings).
I have every book you have written (as far as I know) ..and I’ve just started rereading the Sign of Seven trilogy ..that will keep me occupied for a bit ..no problem with the waiting. I’m good. I always have a copy in my purse ..waiting in line is now a joy ..just pull out my book). I have a ‘senior’ memory so for me it’s like reading it for the first time again ..the joys of getting old. Carry on, Nora, as only you can do.

I read a comment by a professor above, and I so love the academic discussion of all the parallel topics covered-from intolerance of what is not understood and the racism against those who are different, societal and government responses to crises, and good versus evil, the slippery slope in human nature between the two in times of crisses… Makes me long to be a student in that class. I may actually form a book club with friends to do that -once I’ve devoured it a few more times. Don’t want to miss a single detail! Thank you Nora Roberts! Can’t wait for the second installment but in the meantime there is time for multiple reads!

I just finished listening to Year One last week. I had to process what I listened to. At first I thought there was no way I could get through the first two chapters, all the dark, deaths and fear. I had to stop several times and think about something happy. I pushed on thinking it will get happier. And so it did, here and there. The characters in the story were well thought out. Some characters were likeable and some were not. Nora always surprises me with some characters. Magic, good light and dark light, and of course, normal people all thrown in the mix. I hated that toward the end she left New Hope and followed Lana. Maybe she will pick up on that group in Year Two. I will patiently wait for the next book, since Nora writes well. *Just don’t take as long as George RR Martin! My goodness! ?.

I love this book! As always with a Nora Roberts book, I devour it and when I’m done, wish that I did not read it so fast. 🙂 I do plan to re-read it again before Book 2 is released to refresh my memory and because it deserves a second reading.
I’m a die hard fan and have read all your books including J.D. Robb books. I’m currently reading Dark in Death and as usual, I can’t wait to go home and finish the book!
Loved this book! Have read almost all of Ms. Roberts/Robb’s books previously. This seems to be a mix of them….good guys/bad guys, mystery, fantasy/magic (witches, elves, pure evil, etc.) along with the almost apocalypse. I’m another reader who has read (and watched) Stephen King’s “The Stand” many times, so I also recognize that it’s a very similar theme to that….but tweaked enough by Ms. Roberts’ writing style that it became her own.
I go to the library every other week, checking out 20 or so books (and I’ve read this twice) but this is one I am going to BUY for myself (along with the other two) because it is just that good and interesting. Who doesn’t enjoy a really great ‘almost end of the world as we know it’ book! lol
Seriously, great book. Thank you Ms. Roberts for your writing & for not retiring! 🙂
I also think it’s one of her best, and will reread it many times before Book 2 comes out. (I was reading a library copy, but ordered it online about halfway through.) I hope we’ll catch back up with the residents of New Hope in the next installment. That was my only disappointment–that after bouncing between the POV of many wonderful characters throughout the book, we follow a single one at the end, and never learn how the rest fared in the aftermath of the attack.

As with all Ms Roberts books read it in 2 days and think why did you read it so fast now you have to wait. I also love that so many of her books are in large print at my local library. I try and wait till a series is complete so I can read them all in a row, guess you would call it binge reading ?, glad I didn’t on this 1.
First, let me say I have been a Nora Roberts fan for years and…..Let’s not go there. I feel as if I have sat on a shelf and watched her develop her craft. It is exciting to follow the writer over timeand watch as an author learns to create layers in characters and plot.
I am curious though, did Lana appear in another book? I seem to remember reading about a young girl with meager craft talents,who lived in a NY loft?????

I’ve been reading Ms. Roberts in all her personifications since I was in my teens. She has only disappointed me twice. I am looking forward to the next installment of Chronicles of the One and am appreciative of the fact that she is such a prolific writer for the simple reason that as I have finished one of her books there s another on the shelf ready to enthrall me. The other thing is that she doesn’t re title her books something that great many authors or the publisher do when they change something or don’t change something in a book but the name is change. A pet peeve but something Ms Roberts has avoided, so thank you for that. I have enjoyed Chronicles and will wait impatiently for the new installment.
I hate when titles are changed, too. I don’t know how many books I repurchased because of that before I wised up and would check when it was originally published and sometimes would read the first few pages – saved me money. Nora’s books are republished so often, it’s easy to find one I may have missed the first time around or buy a new copy to replace one that is falling apart.
Year One popped up in my holds a few days ago. No idea when I placed it on hold but started reading yesterday as I have gone down with a bug and have time to read. Made for some super odd dreams. Love the book and the characters. Obviously finished it and antsy for the next book. My need to know what happened in New Hope is strong as I am rather attached to that group. I placed a hold on the next book and seriously hope the 77 people ahead of me are fast readers! I always return to Nora Roberts when I have time and I am so glad I do. Amazing talent that keeps me up and reading. Thank you. Now off to send my best friend down this rabbit hole!
So, I am reading Year One and I swear I saw a movie of it as I recall everything that is happening. Only thing I can think of is I read it when it first came out and didn’t remember doing so. I can see everything I am reading happening in my mind, just like a movie. It feels kinda strange. I am going to go ahead and read it again as a refresher before reading the second one.
I love Nora Roberts, and I love fantasy. It is the perfect combination.
I thought the same thing, particularly pregnant woman in corn field. Found by the single, male home owner. That whole ending seemed really familiar to me.
