Perfect Weekend

Yesterday I attended the wedding of my longest of long-time friend’s granddaughter. I was there when Kara was born–in fact, served as co-labor coach with tkarajoeyhe new daddy. I’ve watched her grow into a beautiful, loving and kind young woman. And yesterday on a beautiful May evening, I watched her marry the man she loves–and who absolutely adores every inch of her.

Gorgeous flowers, a stunning bride, a love-struck groom, friends and family ready to celebrate what the bride had dubbed The Best Day Ever. And it was.

I brought home a nasty head cold from Derby, and haven’t had the best week–and that’s putting it mildly. Yesterday I figured to just look at my garden in process–didn’t think I had the energy to do any planting before getting ready for the wedding. Well, maybe just these couple of things. (Note from Laura:  Just a couple…HA!)

Two hours later, I had lots more done, and felt so much better. Gardening, for me, is as good as yoga for feeding the body, mind and spirit. There’s more to do–BW is assigned to pick up the special begonias now ready for me at the nursery (and a few other things) on Monday. I’ve got spots to fill yet, and I’ll enjoy doing just that. But what’s done gives me so much pleasure. Now I can sit back, enjoy–and weed and water and maintain–but a lot of pure enjoyment. How will things grow–how will they look filled in together, what will bloom next?

A wedding is a celebration of love–and a garden is the same for me. A marriage is the work, the joy, the changes, the growth–like a garden you get what you put in, and if you maintain, if you love, you get back even more for years and years to come.

So I wish my sweet Kara and her adorable Joey even more for years and years to come.

  1. Lovely garden, love;y words of sweet Kara and Joey. Bless their marriage. Take care of that cold.

  2. Did I see Bleeding Hearts? I just love the look of them but couldn’t tell if those were in the garden.

  3. We had snow last night, so my plants will wait indoors a little while longer. Hopefully the lettuce is okay. Hope the cold is better!

  4. Garden is shaping up very nicely. I am sorry you have been feeling badly — ope the cold disappears soon. The wedding sounded so delightful — real life romance is so fun to watch, isn’t it? Happy Mother’s Day to you.

  5. Thanks to my DH husband we have a lovely garden, mostly perennials, his azaleas are jaw-dropping because he planted the original plants 40 years ago. We have Iris, peonies, lily of the valley, violets ,daisies and lots of flowering trees and shrubs and a little rose garden too. I am a very fortunate wife. You are so right about gardening, Nora, it renews your spirit like little else. Happy Mother’s Day and get well soon.

  6. I live in an apartment now and miss my garden terribly. I do have a nice large covered balcony that becomes my own little oasis in the spring and summer with planters and hanging baskets and some pretty and comfy chairs. Nora, you are so lucky to have such a beautiful garden. Enjoy it for as long as you can. Happy Mother’s Day!

  7. Your garden already looks amazing. I look forward to seeing more as the season progresses. Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos!

  8. What a beautiful journey to share with your friend and so lucky you are be able to. Gardening is not my joy but a quiet beautiful spot with a cup of tea and one of your books is a pure indulgence and restorative retreat. Thankyou xx

  9. Thank you so much for sharing your day with us. The 3rd was my daughter’s first anniversary and the fun we had planning her wedding with her came back to mind. My husband and I made and decorated her wedding cake. He passed away last November so was double glad of these wonderful memories. My daughter in law put the plants in our window boxes last week, did us both good, not sure if the warm
weather will hold for them but we did put hearty ones in. Hope the cold gets better sooner rather than later.

  10. I’ll ‘wager’ you didn’t appreciate your Derby souvenir – pun intended! A trifecta or exacta would have been better. Rule of thumb in my hometown of Louisville is that annuals are best planted after Derby to avoid the risk of frost. Love my perennials that withstand the wicked whims of Mother Nature. And aren’t subject to my less than vigilant watering. Can’t wait to see more photos of your garden.

  11. What a wonderful blessing for you to witness this young couple’s love and commitment to each other as they begin their life together. Marriage is certainly like a garden…it requires much pruning, weeding and cultivating to keep it strong and healthy long after the wedding is over. (At 40 years this November, I can attest to this first hand!)

  12. Hi,
I hope that the cold is better. Nothing like a summer cold to hang around. So glad that you had a great time at the wedding and I smiled when I read that you were co-coach at her birth. What a wonderful bond! Your garden is lovely. Enjoy!
