Golden in Death excerpt

#50 – out Feb. 2

Fifty is a pretty hefty number, don’t you think? And Golden in Death meets that milestone extremely well.

Here’s the book jacket copy:

Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body—and killed him.

After Eve calls the hazmat team—and undergoes testing to reassure herself and Roarke that she hasn’t been exposed—it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close—though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless. While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she’s dealing with either a madman—or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims.

Here, without further ado, is the first chapter of Golden in Death.

    1. Oh, wow! JD comes through again. Going to be a long time until April. Will be reading some of my favorites of the series to tide me over.

          1. Groundhog day! So, read it again.

  1. Cannot wait for this book to come out! Love the series and I am waiting in anticipation of another great read!

    1. Can’t wait for Golden! My copy is preordered. JD Robb never disappoints!

  2. This was a tease!!!! Counting down until the book comes out — can’t wait. Going to be another great book — as always!!!

  3. Great start for what will undoubtedly be another great book!

  4. February is such a hard month (and there is an extra day in 2020) so a new In Death will be the best way to get through it. I can’t wait!

  5. Why do I do this to myself??? Every time I tell myself it’s months till the book actually releases; don’t torment yourself! Wait until closer to the release date!!! But when the 1st chapter releases; I ignore my warnings to self & click & read! Now I’m counting down & reminding myself that it’s not a good thing to wish away time from one’s life!!!

Just one question: Eve reminds herself partway thru about letting someone know that she’s going to be late (and we know who that someone is!); it’s part of the marriage rules, but I didn’t get the impression that she actually did contact him. She was thinking it and washing up when Peabody stepped to the door with an update. Then they headed upstairs. So, did she ever remember to contact Roarke , maybe in the 2nd chapter?

There was also a weirdness where she has Peabody review the security feed, like it skipped around a bit. Ah well, looking forward to the book!!!

  6. Very good start to what looks like yet another excellent story. Can’t wait!

  7. OMG I can’t wait till this book is released. As usual Nora Roberts does not fail to get me all caught up in the story and wanting more. Please say this is being released soon, can’t stand the suspense.

  8. I did not read it. When I get the book I want to keep reading and this is just a tease!

  9. I can hardly wait to read the whole thing! It’s my early birthday present to myself, my birthday is on the 20th!
Who would have thought, when I read Naked in Death, almost 25 years ago, I’d be reading the 50th book 25 years later!

    Thank you, Nora/JD!

  10. Easter egg? All that Glitters is the name of a store in Dance upon the Air. From the Three Sisters trilogy which is one of my absolute favorites of Nora’s books. I’m set to love this new ID book even more now!

  11. I always read the excerpt when it comes. It just whets my appetite. I need a special bookcase for all my ID books. Here’s hoping Nora (may she write forever ) & i are around for the next 25- at least!!

  12. Just think, chevy, at the rate of NR/JDR’s “story timeline” Eve will only be about 38 for book 100 while we will be (yikes!) a full 25 years older. A good reason for me to really work on making that 101st year because I believe Nora will still be going strong!! So glad this will be out to enjoy in what is promising to be a crazy year on all other fronts.

  13. Read the exerpt, can’t wait to order the book, may have to re-read the Three Sisters trilogy to refresh my memory about All That glitters.
    >^.,.^<

  14. Oh, no, I can’t wait for the book! Am so looking forward to it! My favorite series of the zillion that I read!

  15. My curiosity is whetted!! This looks to be a great mystery for Eve to solve. Can hardly wait. In process of reading the entire series again. Just finished “Promises in Death” and should be ready for “Golden” in February. Love visiting in Eve’s world! Thank you, Nora.

  16. Hooked like a fish! I have got to stop reading these excerpts. February is too far away. Thank goodness The Rise of Magicks will keep me busy for a couple of days.

    1. I finished The Rise of Magicks in less than 24 hours. So glad I am retired. Enjoy your copy.
Looking forward to Golden in Death in Feb.

  17. I am excited to read the book, however due to Macmillan publishing, which St. Martins press is part of I am 135 on my library list. Why, you may ask?
Macmillan publishing severely limits libraries to only ONE ebook copy beginning November 1st, even though libraries pay a fair price. They don’t care about anything but putting a lot more money in their pockets to the detriment of the library system. Not everyone can afford to buy lots of new books or even get to a library for hard copies.
The book will be out forever before my turn comes up for the ebook now.

  18. Another heart pounding anticipation and then sleepness night until we solve the case you make me strong you make me envious of Rourke but you take me out of my head thank you for making this veteran stay sane.

  19. Looking forward to getting it the day it is released. Always enjoy your books. I have one bookcase just for my Nora Roberts, JD Robb books.

  20. Wow, what a great start to the 50th book in this series. I can hardly wait for the release date!

  21. I used to say that the series will be over by book no 50. Well I have been proven wrong. i am now 81 years old still reading my
Kindle, but I long for the day when Mrs Lieutenant Dallas Roarke becomes pregnant and gives up her job to Det. Peabody…After all Roarke says he wants kids..

  22. Its feb 4th were I am for release which is great as I will be able to get it for my birthday and cant wait.
