Time for a first look at Faithless in Death! Here’s the official description:

The scene in the West Village studio appears to be classic crime-of-passion: two wineglasses by the bed, music playing, and a young sculptor named Ariel Byrd with the back of her head bashed in. But when Eve Dallas tracks down the wealthy Upper East Side woman who called 911, the details don’t add up. Gwen Huffman is wealthy, elegant, comforted by her handsome fiancé as she sheds tears over the trauma of finding the body―but why did it take an hour to report it? And why is she lying about little things?

As Eve and her team look into Gwen, her past, and the people around her, they find that the lies are about more than murder. As with sculpture, they need to chip away at the layers of deception to find the shape within―and soon they’re getting the FBI involved in a case that involves a sinister, fanatical group and a stunning criminal conspiracy.

Some of you may have noticed the release date is tweaked slightly from our original pub date. Faithless in Death will now be in stores on Feb. 9 (which is why we always say titles and dates subject to change).

  3. I HOPE you are adding in all the little fun things you’ve been leaving out of your last few novels. Things like Peabody’s obsession with ‘loose pants’ and hunger. Her and McNab’s relationship. Mavis and Leonardo and Bella! Trina’s and Eve’s fear of her. Charles and Louise! These people and their dramas have been missing lately. Please take the time and energy to add them back in. We all miss them terribly and the last few books have felt ‘less than’ because of it. I can’t afford to pay $15/book on my limited income if I don’t get that much pleasure out of it. PLEASE!

    1. Hi Judy,

      Nora uses secondary characters when they pertain to that particular book. Life in the In Death world moves slower than ours and a cop like Eve wouldn’t be seeing off-the-job pals all that often. I can say that Mavis, Leonardo and Bella are in Faithless. That gives nothing away.

  5. I haven’t read an In Death & thought I would give this excerpt a try, so maybe missing something, but on pages 4 & 5, it seems like the Officer refers to the Lieutenant (Eve?) as “sir?” Regardless, this pulls you in right away! Love Nora’s writing.

    1. Yes, Eve is referred to as Sir. May I suggest you start at the beginning though? Book 52 is a lot different than Naked in Death.

      1. Becca, Eve prefers to be called Sir; she corrects folks who call her Ma’am. And boy, when they call her Mrs. Roarke, or Roarke’s cop!

        I have to agree with Laura; best to start with #1 Naked In Death because the characters grow & develop all the way thru the series. If the idea of buying 52 titles staggers the mind; check with your public library; see if they have them available. Enjoy!

    2. Yes, because of her rank she prefers to be called Sir by her detectives,and the other police on the force…She has earned that respect

    3. Oh Becca you need to start at Naked In Death first book and work back out. You will meet all the wonderful people in this world and never want to leave. These books are stand alone stories but it’s a continuous world so you may not understand or be as connected without the back story.

    4. Oh honey you have to start at the beginning to get the full benefit of her storyline. Go to Naked in Death and begin the fabulous journey!

  6. Every time, every time, I tell myself ‘don’t read that first chapter!’ Every time! Still, I do it. Sigh. Already there’s questions to be answered – love it. Hope Laura and Nora are having a great late Fall. Everyone stay safe!

    1. I know what you mean, Paula! I tell myself the same thing because I always want to continue reading but it’s only the 1st chapter. Now I’m going to be wanting it for another couple months or so. Ah well, I just keep rereading previous titles when the craving gets very strong. I loved the little bit about the gardening; both sides, esp. Peabody’s reaction to Eve planting (and driving!) Yeah, them planting the tree was a definite Awww moment.

  7. Thank you for sharing and it all makes sense to me. Now, if I could find a way to make all my stuff move itself to storage while the apartment is repaired I’d be doing fantastic. Miss the military moves, they come in pack it all up, take it away, and then magic when you get to your next duty station it’s waiting for you there. They bring it to you and will even unpack it for you if you want.

  8. I am looking forward to the book, but will refrain from reading the first chapter. I savor the anticipation. Plus, I have to read a book for my book group this Saturday and don’t need the distraction. Thank you Laura. You do a fabulous job bringing us these updates and snippets.   11. LOL Oh, the tingles. Delay gratification! I have two links to the excerpt from Nora and Laura of the first chapter and will wait to read it until later tonight. Of course this means I will be starting my reread of the series to give me the enjoyment of the characters’ development and escape from all the non-fiction these times have presented us.   14. a question for the ages: “why do a cop and a gazillionaire plant a tree?” lol. that opening scene makes me want to reread shadows all over again! maybe i’ll do just that! can’t wait for this full book, though! at least we have the awakening to hold us until this one’s release.

  17. I love this series the most of all series. Hoping Eve never gets pregnant! All of the characters are interesting and memorable which contributes to a good story. Stay safe, Nora, and keep writing! Keep up the good work, Laura!

    Doesn’t give a lot away, as it should be I think.
    So the waiting game begin.
    I’m sure Nora is already involved writing the next on..
    As well as all the other novels she must be in the middle of.

    Is the “Silk” that is in Ritual In Death the same character as Mitch L. Day’s alibi in Secrets In Death?

      Your mum has an eagle eye. But in Ritual, Silk was the young lady’s first name. It’s Scarlet Silk in Secrets in Death.

  22. I started reading the ID series under protest 😂 kinda.
    My local bookstores in the early 2000s had run out of NR books that I hadn’t already read. A sales associate told me JD Robb was also NR and suggested I try one of the ID books.
    Honestly, I did not expect to like them-at all. Very different from the genre of stories that I usually read.
    Boy, was I wrong. I now own every ID book there is, including novellas. I eagerly await the release of new titles.

  23. So, I not only torture myself with reading the first chapter – I come back to read it again! Is that like picking at a hangnail? Anyway, it occurs to me that if Kat painted all of Jenkinson’s ties in a circle – like a kaleidoscope? – you could sell it as an awesome puzzle. I’d be first in line to get one. It’s a cold and cloudy day today, and my brain went off on a ramble – lol. Wishing everyone a great holiday!
