Under Currents excerpt

Under Currents is Nora’s single title release this year — due in stores on July 9. (Isn’t the cover gorgeous?)

The official cover copy reads:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author, a novel about the power of family to harm—and to heal.

Within the walls of a tasteful, perfectly kept house in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, young Zane Bigelow feels like a prisoner of war. Strangers—and even Zane’s own aunt across the lake—see his parents as a successful surgeon and his stylish wife, making appearances at their children’s ballet recitals and baseball games. Zane and his sister know the truth: There is something terribly wrong.

As his father’s violent, controlling rages—and his mother’s complicity—become more and more oppressive, Zane counts the years, months, days until he can escape. He looks out for little Britt, warning her Be smart. Be careful. In fear for his very life, he plays along with the insidious lie that everything is fine, while scribbling his real thoughts in a secret journal he must carefully hide away.

When one brutal, shattering night finally reveals cracks in the façade, Zane begins to understand that some people are willing to face the truth, even when it hurts. As he grows into manhood and builds a new kind of family, he will find that while the darkness of his past may always shadow him, it will also show him what is necessary for good to triumph—and give him strength to draw on when he once again must stand up and defend himself and the ones he loves…

  1. Another blockbuster from NR. I do not expect any less from her. She is #1, the Queen of all best selling Author’s.

  2. Laura – I don’t know if anyone else has caught this, but a chief surgical resident is still in training, and makes, in today’s dollars about $60-70 thousand per year. I believe Nora means chief of surgery, or head of the surgical department, or chair of the department.

    Looking forward to the book!

    1. A Chief of Surgery makes between $500,000 and $800,000 depending on where they practicing.

      1. Exactly. A chief surgical resident has a long way to go to become chief of surgery.

    2. Glad others caught this too. A chief surgical resident has a long way to go before having the clout or the money described here. Chairman of the Surgery Department or Chief of Surgery – yes.

  3. Thank you, Nora! I can already tell that this book will be read in one sitting. It’s a good thing that I am on vacation during release week. Yes, the cover is spectacular.

  4. While at the library yesterday looking for the next “In Death” book, I could have sworn I saw this book on the shelf and even read the jacket. My head hurts now as I must be losing my mind.

  5. Wow! Love the teaser. Will wait to read once the book is out as I am not a patient person once I start reading.

Hope the holidays were as they should be and that the new year is blossoming well.

  6. Looking forward to reading it, sadly much later when out in paperback. Sounds a good read though, but can’t warrant paying the hard back price and keep buying all Noras books

    1. Do you have a Costco membership? You can buy her hardcover books there under $20 most of the time, or under $25.00.

      1. Yes, you can reserve it and they will notify you when it is available. You should go on and continue to check when you can reserve otherwise you could be 172 of 300 people looking to read it….enjoy

    2. Visit your local library and request they get you a copy once it comes out. Free and in hardcover…win win..

  7. I really can’t wait ? well, I can but don’t want to ?

  15. Love the new “NR” logo – in the shape of a book. Classic. Just like our Queen. Looking forward to July.

  16. Not saying that it’s possibly a canonical prequel to the In Death series, but the father definitely shares Richard Troy’s abusive personality.

  17. The chapter went by too quickly! Looking forward to July!

  18. I have marked July 9th down as appointment reading. I can tell that I will be reading this book in one sitting.

  19. It’s definitely not a canonical prequel. Other than the abuse, the two characters really have nothing in common.

    1. Unfortunately evil has lots of brothers and sisters ? on fiction and real life.
I never read InDeath Series and thought “where-do-I-know-this-monster-from” …

  20. I can’t wait until the book is released. Even though this is fiction it hits very close to home for me. I am the oldest of 5 children and my father had wanted only boys. My mother had had her 3rd miscarriage before she became pregnant with me. That was unfortunate because that one would have been my big brother. My father was a brutal man and I was the one that received the brunt of his punishment. The last time my father beat me, I was 18 years old (I was 2 months from graduating from high school) and came in 5 minutes past my curfew. He met me at the door and made me take off my coat and turn with my back to him. He proceeded to use his belt with the belt buckle end as a whip. I stood there and wouldn’t cry which made him madder and he would hit harder trying to get a response from me. My little brother (the youngest of 5 kids and the only boy) was asleep on the sofa. My mom was in the kitchen smoking a cigarette. I still didn’t cry. Then my father’s brand new expensive watch flew off his arm and shattered against the wall. My father stopped using the belt and I turned around and looked him in the eyes and told him that was going to be the last time he hit me, but my language was a little more colorful. I walked down the hall to my room. I went to school on the following Monday and when I was dressing for gym, my friend that I was with asked me if my dad did this. I had bruises across my chest and welts on my back. The year before when I was 17 I tried to commit suicide but only succeeded in making myself deathly ill. My father was so controlling that I tried to go out of state to college, but he refused to allow me to leave. This was in the early 70’s and in 1972 I got married. I really didn’t know what love was but I should have seen the signs before we were married. There was a small amount of controlling going on, but I was 19 and didn’t really realize. Six months after getting married, the abuse started. We had a son in 75 and the abuse stopped until I got pregnant again. He had his son and that is all he wanted (well that is a familiar indication that he was more like my father than I realized). We had a daughter in 78 and he had tried to cause me to have a miscarriage by punching me. I lived in that for just over 12 years and the last time I called my mom and asked her to have dad come and get me, my father asked what did you do wrong this time. I proceeded to tell him about everything I had been going through and my father’s attitude toward me changed immediately. He paid for my divorce and we were just starting to have a decent relationship when he suddenly passed away. I am 66 now and some scars do go away and some don’t.
Sorry for the long history of my life but I really can’t wait to see how Zane and Britt handle their home life as they grow into adults.

    1. I’m so sorry for what you had to endure. My upbringing was extremely difficult, but nothing like yours. One of my symptoms is that I never feel safe, therefore, I can’t trust. I didn’t realize that is also a typical feeling of adult children of alcoholics. I hope you have a support system and some help.

  21. What an incredible beginning to a storyline that cannot be told often enough. If people in abusive situations read about abuse and overcoming abuse in positive stories it may give them the strength and courage to leave. I’m going to try and be patient until July. Connections in Death coming out in less than five hours should help.

    Another blockbuster for Nora.

  22. The excerpt is great. However there is a misprint and a weird spot on page five. There should be quotations around the phrase about a child and father… but the phrase doesn’t make sense to me either. Also wondering if the father is head of surgery?

    1. The excerpt comes from the uncorrected proof so Nora’s already corrected the head of residency error. And “the child is the father of the man” is a quote from Wordsworth, but Griffin added his own second line so it’s not a quote.

      Laura

  23. Can’t wait to read it ! I always have her books on preorder when ever they become available on barns and noble. I’m excited 🙂 Thank Nora! And Thank you Laura for all your hard work too 🙂

  24. Another fabulous from Nora, Queen of all authors. Can’t wait. The cover is gorgeous too!
